Can History be bought, sold or transferred?

637

I was speaking to someone with only a notional interest in football last week who complained about football fans logic on several fronts including the notion of History.

I was asked, “What does it matter if a Rangers Newco playing at Ibrox being supported by the same people have an intangible claim to what happened in the past?

“Their memories remain, they cannot relive the past, what matters most is the future.”

Only a non-football fan could think like this, of course.  History is the context for whatever happens today, without it, the game is diminished, but we are now in a fascinating debate.  In practical terms, Rangers history could become quite a burden with the next few weeks.

The SPL are currently undertaking an inquiry into alleged illegal registration of players at Rangers during the 13 years before Craig Whyte rescued the club from the old board.  Hundreds of football matches could have been played, many trophies ‘won’ with footballers ineligible to play.

If these allegations are proven, games involving ineligible players will be marked as 3-0 defeats.  So much for the history, but what about the punishment?

Our friends at STV suggest that the SPL hold the view that the transfer of a league share from a liquidated company to a Newco would inherit historical rights from the liquidated party’s past.  For Rangers Newco, this would include penalties for around 500 games played by Rangers FC with invalidly registered footballers.

The tariff of which could sink even the healthiest balance sheet.

But still, if liquidated, Rangers FC, founded around 1872 and incorporated in 1899 would cease.  Newco can play wherever they like, it would be a new club.  The law would protect it from misdeeds of the old company while any assets, such as the badge design, film archive or historic Arsenal shares could be purchased by any third party, including Newco.  And before you bid, owning the badge design does not make you Rangers any more than if you acquired Rangers SPL share.

We’ve been told you can buy and sell history in recent weeks which is clearly nonsense but in finding a path through this subject you need to ask what is in the power of each and any organisation or group to affirm.

The SPL can transfer a share in the league and, in conjunction with the SFA, player registrations.  Both can also impose outstanding disciplinary measures.

Duff and Phelps can sell the badge design independent of the league share.

Craig Whyte can sell the stadium independent of all of the above.

No one can sell, buy or transfer 140 years of history, which is why football fans recoil at suggestions of a Newco replacing their team.

How can spl clubs vote on issues such as the re-admission of an insolvent club at this time when there is an as yet incomplete investigation of the most serious nature into whether one(or more) of it’s member clubs played ineligible players for a number of years?

Surely the investigation into alleged non-reported payments much be concluded and dealt with in the first instance to allow all member clubs to be aware of the full picture before voting?

    Thoughts?

I cannot disagree with any of your posts over the last couple of days.

As i see it minty has admitted they payed players outwith the registered contracts.

So any investigation into the 2 contracts and improperly registered players should be pretty straight forward and fairly easy to pass judgement, without waiting for the BTC result.

The fact the SPL are trying to pass new hun-friendly laws before they finish ongoing investigations into players contracts, sectarian singing etc.

To me raises a few questions that need answered.

    Trust….not one bit.

Was the deadline for every club having to respond to whether they paid any players outwith their registered contract, not April 6th.

If it was what has happened, why no further news?

I smell a rat, and it’s not nacho ned!!

The rest of the SPL want to milk both us & the huns. They’re not even pretending to have any sort of plan. The people running these clubs don’t want success they just want to be part of the cabal to stick their snouts in the trough.

  3. My Dear,Dear Kojo…

Celtic play Hearts this weekend,in the semi-finals of the SFA’s showcase tournament…

An ideal opportunity for Celtic FC (Not the fans),to make a ‘statement’ in their own right.

Players are under strict instructions to avoid making any attempts on the Hearts goal..

At all times, they should try their utmost to ensure that the ball goes out of play for a throw-in,somewhere down near the Hearts left corner-flag.

Of course,in achieving this objective, skilful passing moves,ball-juggling,attempts to ‘nutmeg’ the MIB,are all to be encouraged and applauded.(PaddyPower currently offering 1000-1 on Zheng Zhi being the first Celtic player to nutmeg the MIB).

However, there must be no disrespectful attempt by any Celtic player to ‘sit on the ball’.Only overated R*nkers Legneds are permitted such gestures

So,to reiterate, the whole emphasis of Celtic’s play should be to ensure that the ball goes into touch,at the opponent’s left corner flag,in the most stylish manner possible..

The Celtic players will be seen to be shaking their heads, muttering”You’re playing us off the park today, looks like we’ll have to settle for penalties”.

In the face of such cunning tactics,Hearts players (other than Ian Black),will find it difficult to take the initiative. Most likely, they would enter into the spirit of things, and collude with the Celtic players in the spectacle, while secretly fancying their chances in a penalty shoot-out.

Well the Germans and the Tommies did cross their lines to have a kickabout in No Man’s Land in Xmas 1914..

Lennie in the technical area, jumping about and bawling in an agitated manner? Don’t you believe it.’Friday Night Card School, relocated to the dug-out,with Big Johann losing..as usual.

And Stokesie would be leading the Celtic Subs off the benches,to go through their warm-up/ disco routines on the touchlines, with Deep Sea Explorer Frank McAvennie as guest-choreographer.

And the Green Brigade would be belting out Rod’s “Do ya think I’m Sexy”,and Amen Corner’s “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep”…

And,of course, they would all be wearing ‘Red Noses’,and CoCo the Clown wigs,in support of some Unspecified Charity..

So,when a smiling triumphant Lennie faces the cameras after the Penalty Shootout,I reckon his spiel would be along the lines of the following….

“The boys left their shooting boots at home today, that’s for sure. The pitch didn’t help, but I thought the match officials were magnificent .All credit to Hearts for a sporting performance…..

So,it’s onwards to Hampden..”There’s going to be a show, and the Glasgow Celtic will be there”.

But what kinda ‘show’ will that be…?

    Still…Laughin’

  4. Daryll King, ‘natural justice goes out the window’ – journalistic integrity indeed.

That’s the mindset; fk everybody else, as long as the spl keeps ongoing. For a ‘journalist’ to come out with that is utterly pathetic.

  5. SaintStivs

Further, the St Mirren scenario would allow thems to replicate the Airdrie/Clydebank scenario. Of course, Gilmour has had his troubles with that other director, but he has stated he will sell at £2m. So it won’t happen then….

my sentiments exactly mate; the real money is waiting in the wings. The MIBS will take care of the ten point deduction in a month. The paltry loss of revenue from TV money will be easily taken care of by a share issue and the real money coming in; ditto for the loss in European revenue.

The faux outrage we are getting just now is part of the master plan. My bet is that they will not lose a single player, play in the same stadium and eventually (when safe) claim their past history with the full backing of the MSM.

    The game is a bogey:(

    RT,

the rst have decided to show the rest of the clubs what it would be like to live without them ha ha ha ha hah ffs, these clowns cant get any funnier surely.

  8. JimmyQuinnsBits

    Agreed.

Among some of the more bizarre elements (as Paul67 has pointed out) is the notion that the two most contentious resolutions,2A and 5,would only require 8 votes to pass.

    Where did 8 come from?

Even today,Michael Johnston of Kilmarnock spoke of a desire to move to a 75% voting system…that would be 9!!

However,we could be sucked in to thinking the only weapon we have is to lobby other clubs to obtain 5 against when we don’t.What we need to do is make sure 8 votes aren’t cast in favour.

How is that achieved?By making sure there is NO VOTE AT ALL ON 30TH APRIL.

How do we do that, make them complete and publish the non-reported payment investigation first.

Money is a big weapon in this, but so is TIME….and they don’t have a lot of that commodity.

In any war (and this is a war) it’s not neccessarily about who can inflict the most damage and pain but can also be about who can endure the most.

  9. Chick Young seems quite relaxed about the possibility of his beloved Buddies getting taken over by ranglers-ia.

Strange when you remember how animated he got over other issues -extentiongate- refs strike- Neil Lennons behaviour.

  10. Just listening to Clyde tonight – ignoring Darryl who is just pathetic in his defence of Rangers – it strikes me finally that Scottish Football is dead and Rangers have killed it. The SPL and SFA have no clue what to do – this is indeed the biggest scandal in sporting history as Rangers will bring down association football in Scotland.

The press just dont want to report it – here’s hoping C4 really are doing a good job.

Darryl – morals shouldnt be important? How pathetic is he – he is a disgrace.

  11. There is only one way that fans of Rangers FC PLC (in administration) can see the proposals in the Cheats’ Charter as a bad thing.

And that’s if they had assumed that their newco, the Zombie Rangers, would be welcomed back into the league as of right and with no penalty.

Anything other scenario simply didn’t occur to them. And if the rules don’t suit The Peepul then the rules must be changed.

  12. So – what punishment do the tax dodgers fans think they should get….I don’t quite understand their point. They are not happy with what was there before or what may be there in the future. In fact, they are just not happy – a couple of nuggets have taken their Club to the brink and they think that is punishment enough………I was ambivolent about whether they were liquidated or got a CVA but by God their attitude over the past few days has made me change my mind, i want them dead!!! Right, rant over – looking forward to the game on Sunday against the diets, in the Tic End Family Section with the wee bhoy – hope we do Romanov’s apologists.

Just heard Jim Traynor say going into the third division might not be a bad thing for a Newc AND that they had a history worth giving up.!!!

Speirs on Clyde saying being thrown out of the SPL would be just if they are found guilty.

Darryl just put in a corner by both Delahunt and Speirs.

Think things are moving along nicely.

  14. Daryl floundering like a goldfish on the floor there as Spiers asks him a simple question – should Rangers be kicked out the SPL if guilty over dual contracts. Eventually says no, Spiers says yes.

Daryl flounces off saying the programme isn’t there for Spiers to put him on the spot.

Anyone coming over from Belfast for the game this weekend fancy saving me from decorating hell?

Halfway through decorating bathroom (Mega Brownie points) – IKEA who told me the sink would be in stock last Friday, are now hedging their bets for a end of May supply!!!!

I’ve taken 2 weeks off work to sort this. I’m in DIY SOS HELL!!!!

There’s three of said sink in the Belfast store – but IKEA ‘… have no way of organising a stock transfer…’

speirs and jackhun having a wee spat :oD jackhun can see no condition were the hun should be punished, truely a son of the sash.

speirs to give credit, has made it clear he thinks they should be kicked out the spl.

    enjoyed that :o)

  20. Maybe Speirs realises that, even if this all goes for Rangers, it will be recognised the world over as a shameful scandal and he does not want to be associated in any way with it. His co-panellist has no such qualms.

  21. Auld Neil Lennon heid on

That was quite a revealing moment on Clyde there. The Hun mind at work fighting itself.

Earlier Darryl King spoke of Rangers being forgiven, just then he was arguing that what they have done is not that wrong, that if push comes to shove commercial considerations outweigh morality.

THAT Darryl is what got you lot in trouble in the first place!

Not knowing what wrong is and why should you, you have never suffered the consequences and are still wriggling.

  22. kelvinbhoy,

They simply don’t think they should be punished at all.

Rangers did nothing wrong. A couple of bad men did bad things to Rangers. .Why should The Peepul be punished for the misdeeds of Murray and Whyte?

  23. Dawwwyyylll very upset – Rangers should be forgiven for anything just cos they are Rangers – idiot

  24. All this about ‘there is no mechanism’ blx

Didn’t we see written that in the event of a club being unable to fulfill its fixtures, relagation would be adjusted? Is this why the desperation to keep them going?

They keep going on about a moral maze but given that a vacancy will arise in the SPL, why should all SFL teams not have the option of bidding for that place?

  25. I think Mr Speirs has at least contemplated an SPL without Rangers, Sky, foreign players and high wages.

The cost of facing up to the truth and it may well be the lead to long tem sustainability.

    Unlikely I suppose.
