Climbing the mountain, confusing perpetrator for victim

396

It wasn’t a glorious performance last night but I’m delighted to be through to the League Cup quarter final nonetheless. Cup games against lower league opposition are there to be won, nothing else. There were a few bright spots: Saidy Janko looks like he has a sound future in the game, while Efe Ambrose seemed to enjoy his role as senior partner in the defence.

While we struggled for an opening, Kris Commons again stepped forward with a crisp strike from outside the box into the corner of the net. He remains the key to a large number of locks. We should have added more before Stefan Johansen grabbed a late goal to tidy things up.

On the way into the game I predicted Aberdeen’s defeat. With winning 8 league games in a row and being clear at the top of the league, every game has been a cup final for them, until last night. A game against lower league opposition is just not the same (see above). Footballers are not robots, so it’s difficult to ‘climb the mountain’ for every game.

How they react to this defeat will be interesting. Last season they won seven games in a row before Dundee took a point from them, heralding an immediate slide in form and the end of their title challenge. They have a trip to Inverness on Saturday to prepare for.

Charles Green’s apparent claim for legal expenses from Newco Rangers is jarring, but far from surprising.

The Rangers Football Club Ltd (formerly Sevco Scotland Ltd), a member club of the SFA, was the vehicle Green used to strike the Sale and Purchase Agreement for (oldco) Rangers’ assets. It is the beneficiary of that deal, not the victim. The alleged victim is the rightful owner of the assets, which may be Sevco 5088 Ltd, (oldco) Rangers creditors, or someone else altogether.

It is no surprise whatsoever that the beneficiary of a deal would be legally obliged to defend the officers who signed the deal on its behalf.

Still, there’s more to this episode than a simple case of alleged wrongdoing. Fans are caught between affection for the football club and anger at what was allegedly done in 2012. By the football club. I wouldn’t want to have to reconcile those emotions.

We have two big games to look forward to in the next week, both at Celtic Park. Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s game. To win the tickets you need to answer the following question:

Who do Celtic play on Saturday?

I remember Shug K doing similar with us a few years back after a 3-0 win over the dons.

    The game wasn’t even close.

I know for a fact the same guy once had his rating and report written out on our captain after about 10 or 12 minutes.

While Celtic weren’t particularly impressive last night, anybody who was there knows they were far better than Raith Rovers. When “newspapers” manufacture nonsense it can have only one reason in Scotland: they are pandering to their demographic, the hun hordes.

    Gary67,

As it stands I think Blackett will start.

I think you’re probably right but I’d much rather see the player who plays that position starting rather than playing someone out of position. I’d play Tierney.

Quite appropriate as I held on to my seat last night hoping history was not about to repeat.

launder £55,000 of stolen cash through Rangers Supporters’ Association Boys Club has been told to carry out 260 hours unpaid work.

Margaret Stewart stole the cash from her employer, Ivanhoe Cambridge, which used to own Glasgow’s St Enoch Centre.

She then used her position as treasurer at the boys club to pay cheques into its account before taking the cash.

  7. I was very impressed with how the Raith manager/coach planned his team’s game last night. Their defence was set out to stop Celtic going through the middle, yet there was always three men on any Celtic player coming down the wings, either a full back or a winger. Itis no coincidence that the first goal came from long range.

What also stood out for me was how paniced our defence became when Raith went for it in the last 15 minutes. This despite the fact that all four defenders played well individually. I know it was not our first line defence but it does suggest that there is asystemic issue there.

The old problem of not being able to finish off a team at a crucial point in the match is still there, despite the Dundee result. Still if that problem gets solved it may not provide such excitement for the fan!

If I were a Raith supporter I’d be well pleased with my manager and my team after last night. In fact, as a boy, Raith was the first team that I supported…my first match was Third Lanark vs Raith at Cathkin. Anyone remember Willie Toner…..a great player who stayed with a small club?

  8. The reaction to Aberdeen and the Huns being skelped out of the League Cup is a bit different to what it would have been should we have been knocked out. Apparently a blessing in disguise for them. I’m sure we would have been in full blown crisis mode.

  13. To Delaney, Geordie & bourne, Thanks very much lads for the replies and thank you bourne for your kind offer.

As you say I don’t particularly want to be flaffing about looking for tickets as time is very precious on these trips. Especially on this one as we are flying into, Edinburgh arriving 13.45, Bus to Glasgow, drop in bag at Hotel and head to Blane Valley. A natter with the grey & baldie Brigade, a few glasses of vino. Then a walk and it must be a walk, no taxis. buses or lifts, a walk out the Barras and the Gallowgate to Celtic Park. I just love that walk, an oul 67 yr old git with his heart pumping like a schoolboy. A battered sausage & chips at my favourite mobile chip van, a walk around the outside of Stadium to take in the new Developments a 5 minute stop at CQN and then match time. After game hopefully a joyful walk back to The Scotia Bar, a few pints of Guinness, Hotel & Bed. Next morning reverse journey via Edinburgh, Dublin Clonmel.

Must say I’m looking forward to it, I’m travelling with my buddy and a third lad might be joining us. So I’m definitely looking for 2 tickets maybe 3.

I’ll post closer to game time when I know if it’s 2 or 3 and again many thanks lads for your responses.

  14. Folks,

Another memory shattered! Either that or I am losing it. It was Willie McNaught that I meant, not Toner. I remember thinking that he did not look like my image of a player. He looked old! However, he had a great engine and tackled like a demon. I learned a lot from his tackles. He tackled firmly, blocking the ball between his boot and the attacker, then he slid the ball up and over his oponents boot. He then emerged with the ball, often leaving the attacker on the ground. If you have ever had that experience, you will know how satisfying that is! The first time I had seen that. This must have been somewhere in 1959-61.

Willie Toner’s boy was a referee called Kevin.I was at school with him and also played in the same team as him(Muirton). He also booked me on numerous occasions in Junior football games.I am sure he refereed two Junior Cup finals before stepping up.

Did Willie Toner not play for Kilmarnock, after a short stint at Celtic. I used to know his wife. Great Celtic supporter herself. I think her son was a referee

Celtic FC recorded a 2-2 draw at AFC Ajax on matchday one and will look to build on that as they welcome the other UEFA Europa League Group A big hitters, Fenerbahçe SK.

    Previous meetings

    • The sides are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition, and this is Celtic’s first encounter with Turkish opponents.

    • In their only games against Scottish teams, Fenerbahçe eliminated Celtic’s Glasgow rivals Rangers FC 2-1 on aggregatein the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

    • As yet, no Turkish club has won a UEFA competition game in Scotland in seven attempts (D5 L2). In the four of those matches played in Glasgow (D2 L2) the visiting side did not score.

    Form guide

    • Celtic have won all three of their European home games this season.

    • Fenerbahçe have won all six of their UEFA Europa League group stage away fixtures to date – five of them by 1-0 scorelines.

    • Semi-finalists in 2012/13, Fenerbahçe have made it through to the round of 32 in all three of their UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns (2006/07, 2009/10 and 2012/13).

    • Celtic progressed to the round of 32 last season. It was their first successful UEFA Cup or UEFA Europa League group stage campaign after missing the cut in 2009/10 and 2011/12.

    Trivia and links

    • The journey from Istanbul to Glasgow is just over 2,900km.

    • Robin van Persie has yet to score a UEFA Cup or UEFA Europa League goal in 11 appearances; he faced Celtic with Arsenal FC in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League play-offs but did not score.

    • Fenerbahçe’s Gökhan Gönül can make his 50th UEFA club competition in this game.

    • Celtic boast Turkish talent in the form of forward Nadir Çiftçi, who played in the Süper Lig for Kayserispor in 2011/12.

    • Celtic are one of ten domestic champions in this season’s group stage, along with KF Skenderbëu (Albania), FK Qarabağ (Azerbaijan), APOEL FC (Cyprus), FC Viktoria Plzeň (Czech Republic), FC Midtjylland (Denmark), Molde FK (Norway), KKS Lech Poznań (Poland), FK Partizan (Serbia) and FC Basel 1893 (Switzerland).

    The coaches

    • A defender in his native Norway, Ronny Deila was hired by Celtic in 2014 after a six-year spell in charge of Strømsgodset IF, who he led to a Norwegian Cup in 2010 and a league title in 2013. He won another title in his first season at Parkhead.

    • Fenerbahçe coach since June, Portuguese technician Vítor Pereira was André Villas-Boas’s assistant when FC Porto won the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League. He later won two league titles as the Dragons’ coach and a domestic double in Greece with Olympiacos FC in 2014/15.
