Commons future beyond 2017

341

When Kris Commons’ new contract expires in 2017, he will be the same age Lubomir Moravcik was when he joined Celtic as a 33-year-old in 1998.  We now mock those who mocoked Celtic for signing the Slovak genius.  While this may be Commons last contract, if the player applies himself as professionally over the next two years as he has since arriving at Celtic four years ago, his twilight years will continue to be effective.

He is our fulcrum.  When you write Celtic match reports these days you find yourself sampling your Commons notes, whereas pretty much everything of note the rest of the team does is recorded.  He is not the most industrious and will not feature high on many recorded metrics, but he’s the archetypal Moneyball footballer: an over 30 and apparently the wrong shaped marvel.

“Redistribute the tax burden in a fairer manner. I recall my Dad telling me never to worry about paying tax. It meant you were working. Not paying tax meant you weren’t. ”

Sadly that is no longer a truism. It was when paid employment as we all knew it years ago was the norm. Self employed numbers have boomed in the last 30 years and tax is now spread over a smaller taxable workforce. The rich also just relocate abroad if they think their tax burden is too high.

Oh and don’t get me started on football club owners :o)

  5. Ah, Kris Commons. I like the guy and I like that his family are good people with a real love for the club.

Paul67 evidently really rates the guy as any of his post match reports highlight.

I think he is a dangerous player when around the box. I strongly disagree that he is even in Lubo’s ball park.

He has a little creativity but is guilty of taking too long to get the ball under control. Bizarrely, for a player with his technique in striking a ball, he often struggles to receive the ball and get it under control.

I also allow myself to get far too angry when he is classed as a midfielder. I saw one poster on Kerrydale Street compare his goals with Paul McStays as though they occupied the same role!

    Kris plays upfront.

For me, he is too slow of foot and thought to play regularly but a really good guy to have available from the bench.

  6. Me thinks

Ronny is settling in just fine to the job as manager of the Famous Glasgow Celtic.

  8. Like many guys I know who go to the games I’ve had grave reservations about Ronny and his ‘strategy’.

It worries me that he was more interested in fitness than finesse. Somebody commented earlier about Johansen being a first pick for Ronny regardless of his personal form and is agree with that. However, all managers have their favourites who, if fit and eligible, are in the first 11.

The contract extension for Commons leads me to think that craft and creativity are priorities for Ronny too.

    Great news all round.

  9. West End of East End on

Well going by the Twitter feed that was a good press conference, I really like Ronny, I think he now understands that he needs to be careful in what he says as the SMSM will twist his words to suit their agenda. A very positive press conference, well done Ronny…

4OD still has the 49th Superbowl available for a couple of days.

It’s only February, but any sport will struggle to match the last 10 minutes of New England v Seattle for drama, suspense and an incredible ending to a tournament or championship in 2015.

You can fast forward past all the other stuff that surrounds the event, and catch the second half or those last 10 minutes.

It certainly filled a sporting gap for me last Sunday.

Also noteworthy was the way the officials didn’t try to ‘manage ‘ the game to avoid one side losing too badly, or the lack of concern among supporters that if their team won by too many points, there might be ‘social unrest’.

Mass brawl at the end too among the players hasn’t occasioned any White House summit.

The manager knows the player better than we do. The player knows the manager better than we do. I suspect this bond is important in communicating ( and demonstrating) to the wider team how the game needs to be played to fulfil the managers wishes.

CELTIC HAVE PLAYED 38 GAMES THIS SEASON, KRIS COMMONS MISSED 7 WITH AN INJURY, SO… wait there’s the caps lock key, where was I, yeah so has been available for 31 games.

Of those 31 games, he has started 20, and came on as a sub in 8 of them, twice coming on at half time.

So has been involved in 28 of a possible 31 games. Not bad for a player whose manager won’t play him.

Unless you’re suggesting he should be a guaranteed starter in every games regardless of form?
