Commons touch and experience needed

I was pleased Ronny Deila fronted up for the press conference yesterday. He didn’t say anything particularly revealing but it was reassuring that the pressure of the last week hasn’t seen him hide from searching questions.

Mention of clear the air talks at Lennoxtown was welcome. It lets us know that the fans are not the only ones who believe the ‘air’ hasn’t been right recently. It will also, hopefully, have given anyone harbouring a grievance to get it out.

One of the manager’s biggest decisions for Sunday is who to trust in midfield. He needs players who will respond to the circumstances, and who can open what will be a packed defence. Guys who have been over the ground before, who know how to dig deep in the face of adversity, are also required. For me that means a start for Kris Commons.

  1. Guyfalks: I attended the recent rededication of Frank Ryan’s grave in Glasnevin Cemetary. Andy Irvine, well known folk singer and former Planxty member, sang a song in tribute to Frank Ryan. The event ended with a rendition of The Internionale, sung enthusiastically by all of us present at the event.

  2. Clogher, Not your answer but I Googled Tearing Down Union Jack Armistice Day and it led me to a Statement by a James Ormond from Lismore which is a few miles from Dungarvan relating to a similar incident in Lismore on the same day. In his case they were baton charged and he was knocked unconscious

We all know the major events but it is fascinating to pick up on more simple events..

    Roy Aitken.

When he moved to Newcastle a Newcastle fan asked me about him.

I said “He is a great guy to have in your team when you are 2-0 down. Only problem is that he caused the two goals”

In the eighties we were up against a smart defender like Willie Miller who who cover the angles and sheaperd an attacker to the side whilst others got back into position to cover. Aitken was usually out of position or dived in to a tackle. If he won it, fine. But if he lost it, we were left exposed.

Whilst Ronny should have been more cautious about conceding that Boyata fouled at Hamilton, his main point was that staying on your feet is better than diving in.

As a defender myself I was always taught to mind my position and not to dive in without cover.

Aitken does hold one special place with me as he was the first player who was younger than me that I watched in a Celtic jersey. But I could never understand why he was so popular with the support.

Against Partizan Belgrade, when we finally got into a winning position with 2 minutes go, he charged up to support Alan Sneddon on the right wing. We lost the ball and they broke up and scored with him AWOL. That summed him up for me.

  6. Forgot to mention. Hope Proudbhoy makes Dublin. I know he is trying hard. He’ll love the flag I ordered.

  7. There’s always a defining moment in a managers tenure and RDs moment came on Wednesday night. When the players ran to the side line in front of the dugout for refshement and looked to RD he turned and walked back to the dug out. That will stick with me more than the ridiculous Ronny roar.

Fair play to you and your comrades on that occasion.

As a Celt who attends every Celtic Graves Society re-dedication when notified (except I couldn’t cross the water last year when requested), I understand the significance of such events. They’re a great do.

Now, I can’t let you think Ernie Lynch had any part of whatever aspersion you think I’ve passed. His honest joke was the clip of The Internacionale. It worked on the day as a joke. Only idiots like me would watch the clip to the end of the eight minutes.

    Sorry Ernie and Almore.

Correct me if I am wrong, but does our whole wellbeing and history now revolve around this upcoming game? No wonder the players are experiencing a sense of fear, I am now in meltdown! On you go Glasgow Celtic, rip the net a new one Bhoys! :-)

Yes. You are correct . Please accept my apologies.

Peter Grant was the right back. Age and memory loss getting the better of me.

However Mr. Google does support my main asdertion:

“A half-volley from McStay was saved, but not held, by Pandurovic in the Partizan goal and Dziekanowski blasted the ball into an unguarded net. It was the first of five goals in a ridiculous twenty minute spell.

There then followed a period of relative calm, with more than a quarter of an half passing without another goal. However, with just nine minutes left, Celtic took the lead for the first time in the tie. Mike Galloway’s driven cross from the left required only the slightest of touches and it was provided by, yes, Dziekanowski, as he guided the ball home from within the six yard box. It was his fourth goal of the night, completing one of the most remarkable individual performances in the history of European football.

This should be the rather dull part, where I describe how Celtic seen out the closing minutes of the match – make a couple of subs, run the ball into the corners, that type of thing. If only.

Instead, the hosts continued to attack. McNeill’s teams were always cavalier in their style, but this was incredible, even by his standards. It was also complete madness and, in the dying seconds they paid the price. The visitors won possession in their own half and broke down the left. A cross to the back post was nodded back across goal and Sladan Scepovic headed home to clinch the tie for Partizan on away goals. Incidentally, Scepovic’s son, Stefan, moved to Celtic Park before the end of the transfer window”

Aitken was the one out of position that caused that decisive goal.
