Defences, views and runs

1232

We can take some comfort in the fact that Salzburg have lost three games on the bounce but they sit in second spot in the Austrian Bundesliga, Celtic are fourth in the Scottish Premiership and have won only one of their previous five games.  The Austrians will see just as much comfort in our form.

Success on Thursday will be determined by who manages to overcome their frailties most effectively.  As far as Celtic are concerned, that will mean trying to find the kind of defensive performance that we put in last season.

Our reason for most confidence should be the speed which we can break at, and Salzburg’s only defensive issues.  They shipped three goals to Sturm Graz and Malmo in recent outings.

Many thanks to everyone who has already taken our ‘Who we are and Our Values’ survey, it took just over 1 hour to register 1,000 submissions.  It’ll take you little more than 5 minutes to share your view on some important matters, take a look here.

I’m a wee bit late to the party but I’ve signed up for the Great Scottish Run on 5 October to assist Celtic Foundation’s work in the areas of health, equality, poverty, and learning.  If you’ve already registered with the event, or you have a pair of trainers and an outrageous disregard for the aging process, get involved.

You can register for the Great Scottish Run here and with the Foundation be emailing them, details here.

This is our club, they are your trainers, that is your outrageous disregard for the aging process.  Let’s do it.

In relation to the referendum, i saw someone earlier make a good point and I have pulled together some stats as some kind of comparison with the Irish Republic which is of similar size in terms of population.

    Irish pop = 4.6m

    Scottish pop = 5.3m

    Irish GDP in (£) = £107bn

    Scottish GDP in (£) = £150bn

Irish Debt = £126bn (124% of GDP) (UK debt is at 86% of GDP)

Scotland would potentially have a debt of £100-130bn (66-75% debt compared to its GDP estimated)

However UK share of assets to Scotland would be £109bn of assets from around the World & UK over 300 years so from my addition we are nearly at a debt zero situation give or take £17bn which would be a very advantageous position to be in if Independence was voted for. Provided our politicians don’t go daft or stick their noses in the trough and sensible policies and economics are the order of the day then there is a strong argument for us to go it alone.

My “Buts” are that in Ireland it costs £50 to see a GP, £120 for A&E and private medical insurance is very expensive for a very poor public and private healthcare system. Says it all when the current leader of the opposition ( who was once healthcare minister had to send his daughter to the UK for care says it all imo). The levels of cronyism & corruption amongst bankers, property developers, & politicians would be my biggest fear with no “accountability”! This shower stiffed their own people for the bondholders debt where nearly 600k people cannot afford to pay mortgages & evictions are becoming more & more common. This from Bertie Aherne the Taoiseach who told those who complained that the property market was a big bubble to go commit suicide! These guys made Westminster politicians look like amateurs I hope if we vote yes checks and balances are put in place for public office that will ensure such shenanigans are not repeated here.

    (From earlier)

I hadn’t seen a post from you in particular about Commons, I just noticed a few and then, in my own wee head, added them to other recent posts about him :-)

Kris Commons often receives the ball in areas of the park which:-

    A) are congested with team mates and opposing midfielders and defenders.

    B) are the areas where goals are most frequently scored or created.

It’s natural that playing in this environment will result in any player losing the ball from their first touch on occasion. Commons is no different.

Last season he scored 30+ goals and he had a number of assists.

Few of these goals were scored with his first touch, which indicates that he got himself in a scoring position through one or more previous touches.

All of this whilst having a poor first touch?

    I don’t think so.

    Is he quick? No.

Is he particularly good at tracking back? No.

Last season Commons was our most effective offensive player, the statistics support this.

On Saturday he was again our biggest threat.

    Play to his strengths.

As I said earlier if Ronny plays Commons he’ll score or create if played in the right position.

“Will it truly be a beacon to others, a welcoming kind place as Scots can be, or will it be run by and for its own exclusive establishment to the detriment of minorities.”

    ——————————————————————————————————–

None of us know what the future will hold but based on our experiences we can try to predict certain aspects of it. Currently the Yes support seems to comprise a broad spectrum of decent inclusive people and while I cannot quote from any official documents it has been my understanding that ‘being inclusive’ was very much the model we aspire to. I would have thought that this would mean that Jews were as welcome as anyone else in the future Scotland but I notice that even some of the Catholics on this site have reservations about how it will impact on them. As I’ve said many times my vote is based on Hope rather than Fear and I can tell you that with my name if the agenda is going to be anti-Catholic I’ll be high on their hit list.

I’m very sorry to hear that you are experiencing anti-semitism at all but even more disturbed that it is from the left. I am unaware of people like that. I do hear vehement statements agains the Isreali state (which I’ve heard from many Jews as well) but these have never become anti Jewish in my hearing.

  15. Timmy7 ok apologies.

However lets try and have a debate. So you claim Scotland has become less sectarian in the last 30 years. I will leave aside the sevco debacle, the NL Edinburgh jury, losing of sectarian attacks stats, the OB act ECG for the sake of argument.

So yes it has improved. A bit. It was only 15 years ago my brother had to leave because he was a catholic and couldn’t get promoted in the shipyards. But it has improved a bit.

But here is the run. It improved while being in the uk and I believe the rest of the uk has a dampening effect on the worst excesses of sectarianism in Scotland.

So why is it an argument for independence? Remember how I started this post too?
