Defences, views and runs

We can take some comfort in the fact that Salzburg have lost three games on the bounce but they sit in second spot in the Austrian Bundesliga, Celtic are fourth in the Scottish Premiership and have won only one of their previous five games.  The Austrians will see just as much comfort in our form.

Success on Thursday will be determined by who manages to overcome their frailties most effectively.  As far as Celtic are concerned, that will mean trying to find the kind of defensive performance that we put in last season.

Our reason for most confidence should be the speed which we can break at, and Salzburg’s only defensive issues.  They shipped three goals to Sturm Graz and Malmo in recent outings.

Many thanks to everyone who has already taken our ‘Who we are and Our Values’ survey, it took just over 1 hour to register 1,000 submissions.  It’ll take you little more than 5 minutes to share your view on some important matters, take a look here.

I’m a wee bit late to the party but I’ve signed up for the Great Scottish Run on 5 October to assist Celtic Foundation’s work in the areas of health, equality, poverty, and learning.  If you’ve already registered with the event, or you have a pair of trainers and an outrageous disregard for the aging process, get involved.

You can register for the Great Scottish Run here and with the Foundation be emailing them, details here.

This is our club, they are your trainers, that is your outrageous disregard for the aging process.  Let’s do it.

‘ Sean Connery is a no show

SIR Sean Connery will not appear in Scotland to back the Yes campaign because of his tax exile status, the star’s brother has revealed.

Speculation has been mounting about whether Connery, a passionate supporter of Scottish independence, would make a last-minute intervention.

But his younger brother, Neil, speaking at his home in Edinburgh, appeared to dash any hopes among Yes supporters of the former Bond legend jetting in from the Bahamas.

Neil, 76, rejected persistent suggestions that the no-show was down to Connery’s health, claiming the star was in “better health” than him.

Connery has previously travelled to Scotland to give his backing to the SNP. But he has been criticised for urging Scots to risk their future while living abroad in luxury.

Neil Connery, himself a retired actor, said: “I really don’t believe he will be making an appearance this week in Scotland.”

Asked about the whereabouts of his brother so close to the vote, he replied: “There’s only a certain amount of days Sean can be in the country for tax reasons, so I know that he intends to use them wisely.”

Asked if his brother’s health was part of the reason for his absence from the campaign trail he replied: “No he’s just fine.

“Last I heard from him he was in New York. He’s probably in better health than me!”

“He’s got a lot on his plate at the moment.”

The Yes campaign refused to comment on the claim, but an insider suggested the 84-year-old star’s non-appearance was nothing to do with his tax status.

“It is our understanding that it is to do with ill health and he’s an old man.”

On Twitter yesterday, dismayed Yes supporters continued to ask when, if ever, Connery would be appearing.

James Mceleny tweeted: “My one disappointment of the Yes campaign – where’s Sir Sean Connery? Your people need to take direction from the greatest living Scot.”

Connery, widely referred to as the “Greatest Living Scot”, is famed for starring in a total of seven James Bond films.

In 1989 he was voted “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine.’

  9. I think the fact that engurrland are trying to keep scotland in the union should be enough for any scotsman to vote yes.. They need scotland more than scotland needs them i believe.

As much as i would love the unification of my country i know the people of the 6counties may be worse off than they currently are but if i had chance to vote my thoughts would be with sands, micheal meenan, mairead farrell , bronco bradley, and the thousands who either died fighting for ireland or who spent most of their adult life in jail locked up by foriegn keys and strange accents and not about my own personal gains or losses. But i can understand not everyone is the same.

I firmly believe their will be lots of people in the no side for months and when they see that bit of paper with yes or no they will mark yes.

Also a good credible alternative to the snp may then come out if theres a yes vote.

The Bard of Barking, 52, who has a long record of supporting left-wing causes, said: “Lib Dems have the best manifesto. Labour have taken the white working- class vote for granted.

“We need old-style democratic socialism that builds houses and finds people jobs.”

On the blind side and down the back ways

    The roots of sadness crawl,

When you can’t get what you need

You feel like taking a torch to it all

All the sweet talk makes a bitter man

You can feel the darkness rise

Sometimes you don’t know what you’re fighting for

You don’t know who it is you despise.

    I am the Halleluiah Man

Break all the rules I’m the King of fools

I’m the renegade in this greytown

And I’ll do anything to bring a government down

    I am the Halleluiah Man

Yes my friends I’ve been born again

I’m the black sheep who while shepherds sleep

Will do anything to bring a government down

In a coat of a thousand colours

    And a star spangled Cadillac

He picked up a rodeo queen

With whiplash marks all over his back

When dreams don’t become their people

    People become their dreams

He didn’t understand at the time

But now he knows exactly what it means

    I am the Halleluiah Man

Break all the rules I’m the King of fools

I’m the renegade in this greytown

And I’ll do anything to bring a government down

    I am the Halleluiah Man

Yes my friends I’ve been born again

I’m the black sheep who while shepherds sleep

Will do anything to bring a government down

They said watch out boy be careful where you tread

You’re throwing away all that beautiful bread

He slept outside until the world opened up

They’ve got to understand he’s a Halleluiah Man

He says I am the Halleluiah Man

And I’ll do anything to bring a government down

    He built himself a prison

He knew he had to escape

How is Scotland voting to stay in the UK going to address urban poverty and decay in northern England?

An independent Scotland could provide a financial counterbalance to commercial activity in the north of England as opposed to the current centralisation of English resources into the City State of London

It might also radicalise the English people to seek and pursue political change of their own.

So on a scale of 1 to 10, just how bad is Billy Bragg’s grasp of political reality?

Not only did he campaign for the LibDems but he did so because “We need old-style democratic socialism that builds houses and finds people jobs”.

How did that work out then, Billy?

It didn’t. But he tried. And he’s an honest, thoughtful guy. Someone who has a grasp of real world and social justice that few in Westminster could dream of having and few in Holyrood could surpass.

But he’s not perfect. Or omniscient. And for that he apologises. As do I.

  21. The idea that if we vote Yes we are letting our English friends down is just untrue. Only twice since 1945 have Scottish votes changed the government from what the rest of the UK voted for. All the other times English voters get what they wanted and good luck to them. In contrast in many elections since the war, Scottish voters have not got what they wanted. We voted Labour and got Tories and in an attempt to sway the English voters even our Labour party has moved away from the aspiriations of the working class. Scottish and English. Independence would change this. We would be able to vote in a party that by definition represented the views of our population. Personally I think it would be a left of centre party but who knows.

I have a number of friends and family members who live in England. They are a wee bit sad that we might vote to leave them but, that said, they understand and hope we vote Yes and indeed a number have said that they want to come with us. They also understand that the Scottish people are not leaving the English people they are leaving the cruel policies that have come from the Westminster politicians.

Us leaving does not weaken them it provides an inspiration that we don’t have to take it lying down. If we go then other parts of theUK will follow our lead. Billy Bragg’s article on the referendum written from a traditional English Labour point of view is very interesting.
