Drama Queens, LostBhoys and where we came from

537

There will be no mention of ‘Drama Queens’ from me, but those who were uncontrollably distressed by ‘defeats’ in meaningless friendlies will no doubt be delighted to lean a Celtic team largely staffed by undergraduates got the better of Brentford yesterday.  The rest of us remain unmoved, although I was pleased Amido Balde received some encouragement.

As many of you will know, the LostBhoys have been broadcasting podcasts covering Celtic’s history in recent months.  It has been an incredibly professional, informative and entertaining look at our club through the years.   This weekend they broadcast a decade I helped them cover, 1950-1960.

It encapsulated a seminal period for Celtic.  When the SFA ruled the club would face suspension if they continued to fly the Irish flag, we could have gone out of business, or forever been robbed of our heritage.  The decade saw many of the great names in our history at Celtic Park: McGrory, Tully, Stein, Fallon, McNeill, Chalmers, Auld, Gribben and Hogan, as well as the ever-influential, Sir Robert Kelly, but to those at the time it looked like we were heading nowhere.  Celtic lost more games in the 50s than in any other decade, but as we know, it’s darkest before the dawn….

There are great contributions from Charlie Gallacher and John Fallon, and Terry Dick, son of Glen Daly, who recorded The Celtic Son, told us how the song came into being (it was basically the work of Charlie Tully).

You can download this episode here but catch them all, you’ll be glad you did.

Two days until football returns to Celtic Park; can’t wait.

  1. Donegal not in the game, but, conversely, still in the game.

It’s a funny ol’ game, this GAA.

  2. Mickelson looking good for the Open. Wanted Westwood to win but seems not going to be his day.

  3. Fourgreenfields,

I think the ht whistle would be welcome to Donegal, ti give them time to re focus.

In spite of their superiority, Monaghan are still well in sight and Donegal must improve in the second half.

Murphy is invisible and losing Mc. Hugh was a blow.

    It will be tough.

May depend on whether Monaghan can keep up their efforts.

So they think the fire on the sevco bus was started by people who support their biggest rivals.

Who’s that then, East Fife or Stenhousemuir?

  5. FourGreenFields, your timing was a bit off, sounds like you’re kicking every ball in Clones!!! Heading over next week and hoping you left me some of that good weather…

Just snorted coffee out of my nose….

  7. FGF, I used to have to present man of the match plate at Donegal GAA games so am a keen follower. However I don’t have any major affiliation but enjoy the game and atmosphere round it. Did manage to be on the Hill when Dublin came back from Kerry a few years ago and enjoyed the atmosphere.

Well deserved for Phil Mick- he’s had some tough times on and off the course but he is one of the elite now. Westwood just doesnt have it – we’ve been here before with him.

Time to join the banter bus – the huns could now make some money by charging Celtic fans $1 for a video tour of the bus!

  12. Jimbo I agree Mickleson is also a good ghuy his wife had breast cancer and Mickleson for all his talent and modesty was always in the shadow of Tiger woods. Lee Westwood like montgomery before him cannot get over the line at the majors. The sad reality is that both talented golfers montgomery and Westwood could not cope with the pressure of expectation when the chance was there for them

    Jude,

Are you from the Clydebank area ?

That story was attributed to a local worthy & greyhound man Tommy McLaughlin ( nicknamed The Horse ) & was an account of an actual event.

Bus company SMT only allowed ONE dog at a time on their buses.

    Tommy arrived with two.

The Clippie refused Tommy’s pleas for conveyance.

    No joy.

‘ Stick yer bus………………..’, says Tommy.

Naw, but if you had stuck wan o’ yer dugs there,..ye wid have got on the bus.

  14. FGF, no bother getting score via livegaascores, need snookers at this stage. Sad thing is if they go out Jim McGuinness other job may get the blame!!!

  15. Congrats to Monaghan.

Thoroughly deserved to win and never looked in trouble at any stage.

Back to the drawing board, Jim.

Totally agree- sadly feel that this may be Lee’s last chance. Maybe he’ll do a Darren Clarke and win one late in his career. Mickelson is a total gent. Saw him at Muirfield on a horrible Saturday and he remained remarkably calm and courteous.
