Drama Queens, LostBhoys and where we came from

537

There will be no mention of ‘Drama Queens’ from me, but those who were uncontrollably distressed by ‘defeats’ in meaningless friendlies will no doubt be delighted to lean a Celtic team largely staffed by undergraduates got the better of Brentford yesterday.  The rest of us remain unmoved, although I was pleased Amido Balde received some encouragement.

As many of you will know, the LostBhoys have been broadcasting podcasts covering Celtic’s history in recent months.  It has been an incredibly professional, informative and entertaining look at our club through the years.   This weekend they broadcast a decade I helped them cover, 1950-1960.

It encapsulated a seminal period for Celtic.  When the SFA ruled the club would face suspension if they continued to fly the Irish flag, we could have gone out of business, or forever been robbed of our heritage.  The decade saw many of the great names in our history at Celtic Park: McGrory, Tully, Stein, Fallon, McNeill, Chalmers, Auld, Gribben and Hogan, as well as the ever-influential, Sir Robert Kelly, but to those at the time it looked like we were heading nowhere.  Celtic lost more games in the 50s than in any other decade, but as we know, it’s darkest before the dawn….

There are great contributions from Charlie Gallacher and John Fallon, and Terry Dick, son of Glen Daly, who recorded The Celtic Son, told us how the song came into being (it was basically the work of Charlie Tully).

You can download this episode here but catch them all, you’ll be glad you did.

Two days until football returns to Celtic Park; can’t wait.

For all his faults Bob Kelly ALWAYS stood up for Celtic.

The tricolour affair in the 1950s being the prime example.

*that and the Czechoslovakia incident as well as having the coin toss to decide European ties changed, however, if it hadn’t been for Big Jock history would not have been so kind to him, he definitely cots us trophies by his team selection interfering i.e. Bobby Craig for Jinky in the ’63 cup final replay.

The chairman of Hibs at the time, Harry Swan, was a prime mover in the whole episode but the real mover was the SFA Secretary, a certain George Graham.

*His nephew george graham was banned for a year by the FA for accepting a 450k bribe from an agent, he has been out of management since 2001.

If Tiger cheated on mrs TT the way he persistently cheated on his own wife would mrs TT be so tolerant

I would think serious lacerations to the nether regions would come to mind.

Re your better half’s comments re Rory and Tiger and their relationships. I am sure holding such conflicting points of view can be justified . I find it better not to ask!

  10. Watching Bayern Munich in the mini tournament in Germany, they beat our opponents this coming Saturday 5-1 in a match which lasted only an hour. Awesome footballing side.

Just seen a couple of pics of Mr Solidarity in the crowd at Brentford, looks as if he was enjoying himself.

When I see Tiger now, I see Sevco – same sense of entitlement and view that the rules don’t apply to them and that they can do, and treat others, as they please….

    like what?

Well Sevco in it’s many forms believe the WATP nonsense and feel that rules are there to be changed/manipulated to benefit them….Woods on the other hand just thought that general rules of decency/respect didn’t apply to him and that he could do as he pleased in his personal life…have no sympathy for him…

Aye they need our money now. My sons pals won a comp there a few years ago had the green outfit on.They cheered them up the 18th but the members didnt. Sad lot. A member once told me they dont even have green raffle tickets.

  16. Woods comes across as a pretty miserable person despite all he’s achieved in life. Never seems happy no matter winning everything, shagging everything in sight just can’t crack a smile.

  17. Anyone taking a trip to ayr races tomorrow?

The barca mole called to say he would be going.

    Timhorton.

Did tiger not cheat at us open when placing his ball wrongly?

  18. In the Celtic shop today and mrs bt picked up the Celtic tartan golf trousers. .

They would go down well at some golf clubs..

  19. mickbhoy1888 on

Fantastic value at the Golf yesterday £75 entrance fee which worked out about £6.80 an hour to watch international superstars at the top of their game and in fantastic conditions. Civilised bunch of spectators on their best behaviour an very knowledgable about the sport, oldies and youngsters alike. Scare stories before about the price of a pint but at £4.20 isn’t much more than you’ll be getting charged at the new lounges at Celtic Park.

Not many Sengas or Shuggies in attendance and the tans were all of the genuine variety

Did hear though that a few Dermotts in attendance allegedly

Now converted to attending the Open on a regular basis so roll on St Andrews 2015

  20. One of the strange thing with Woods is he’s a stickler for etiquette, he’s always telling fans to shut up (usually correct as some golf fans at these things are knobs) yet is gobbing all over the place.

Take today on the 17th green I think, he spits a beauty, imagine the next player having to put through that.

  21. mickbhoy1888 – a few arrests though, what happened there?

Lots of empty stands as well, why was that?
