George Peat still casting shadow

1187

Predicting what is about to happen in Scottish football is a bit of an art.  We all realise that just about everyone has an agenda, so the first thing most of us do is ignore whatever overt line is being promoted by one or two sources of ill-repute, especially when they suggest that Sevco will definitely play football in the SFL First Division next season.

So far around 11 clubs have intimated they will vote against this proposal while only Stenhousmuir, the very club that stepped forward to give former SFA president George Peat a seat of the board after he completed his work with Airdrieoneans, have offered the Loyal support.

Apart from Stenhousmuir, only Stewart Regan and Neil Doncaster seem keen on the idea of allowing Sevco to start their sporting life in two levels up from the bottom.

Ally McCoist spoke some wise words to online channel, Rangers TV (current ownership model unclear).  Having gained some first-hand managerial experience against Falkirk last season, McCoist knows that First Division football would give Sevco no guarantee of promotion.  He complained that he has only six first team players at the moment, although didn’t add “and they are rubbish”.

There is also the suspicion that Sevco are not shifting a lot of season tickets, income levels could be acutely low, and their potential fans appear to have no more appetite for a grubby accommodation than anyone else.  Apart from Stenhousmuir, Regan and Doncaster, of course.

McCoist addressed the prospect of additional punishments to be handed to Sevco for the misdemeanours of Rangers as a further reason to go straight to the bottom of the pile, however, he didn’t touch on the obvious point.

The only way Sevco are going to avoid penalties for Rangers EBT behaviour is if the former club is found to have acted correctly, or if Sevco make no claims to inherit Rangers club licence, name, badge or other unique identifiers.

Anyway, we have Inter Milan, Real Madrid and the Champions League qualifiers to look forward to. Bring them on!

  3. ‘It’s the proper thing to do’ — East Fife chief says Third Division is only option for newco Rangers

East Fife chairman Sid Collumbine has accused the SPL and SFA of using ”idle threats” to pressurise SFL clubs into voting the newco Rangers into Division One

Next week’s vote at Hampden has taken on massive significance after the SPL refused to allow the newco entry into the top flight, with SFL clubs now charged with deciding what league Rangers should play in — or if they should be allowed into the SFL at all.

Despite suggestions that £16 million could be lost to the Scottish game if the new Rangers drop to the Third, Collumbine insists the Fifers will not waver in their position next week.

”To me it has to be the Third Division — it’s the proper thing to do,” he told Courier Sport. ”What’s the use of the rules governing what happens when a team goes into liquidation when they just try and parachute them back in again?

”I’m glad sporting integrity prevailed in the end (at Tuesday’s SFL meeting) but they’ve put more pressure on us again. You can’t have a rule for 40 clubs and a rule for two — it just doesn’t work.

”If it had been Motherwell or Hibs or Hearts it wouldn’t have come to this. The rules put Gretna into the Third Division, the rules put Livingston into the Third Division and the rules must put Rangers into the Third Division.”

Collumbine believes SFL clubs should ”stick by their guns”, despite the apparent threat of a breakaway second flight being formed.

”The SPL are panicking and they virtually demanded Rangers should be put into Division One or they will form a breakaway SPL2,” he said.

”They were saying that £16 million would be taken out of the game and would destroy football.

”This is where the SPL have told us lies and they made it clear that if we didn’t vote Rangers into the Third Division they were going to go for another league.

”It’s a very, very difficult call for us on Thursday and I’m sure there will be a lot of private and undercover meetings going on between clubs next week.

”But I think now is when we can be making the changes to the game that are needed,” the Bayview chief added.

I’m in tune with what James Forrest and PaddyBhoy are mooting.

There is a great opportunity at the moment to foster mutual respect amongst the clubs which have done the right thing here nothing but good would come from the emergence of flying squads of guest supporters paying their way into the “Integrity Section” of the decent clubs.

One of the best consequences of the current drama has been the realisation amongst many Celtic supporters that the fans of the diddy clubs are not all just Huns without the bus fare; similarly, a great many of those supporters are now daring to recognise that there was only ever one “ugly sister”, not two.

If we can build on that progress, we will establish good foundations for taking the game forward in conjunction with our league partners on a sustainable, realistic model.

I’d rather not hear any more talk about plans to jump ship to England if the opportunity ever arises. Apart from the fact that the English Premiership is the most corrupt league on the planet, we should have more respect for the clubs in our own country. Aberdeen have won more European trophies than Celtic have. Dundee United lost a UEFA Cup Final and were presented with UEFA’s Fair Play award long before Celtic did the same. Ross County and Inverness Caledonian Thistle are clubs with a rock-solid community base and each of them have worked their way up from the Highland League to the SPL entirely by their own efforts, spending their own money, balancing their budgets and taking their place in the top division on merit. They have earned respect and it should be given to them.

Portugal hasn’t trotted out the excuse of being a small country cowering in the shadow of La Liga while languishing amongst the also-rans in European competitions. Porto’s haul of European trophies in the last decade should be a constant reminder that we have everything to play for too. We’re here in Scotland and the biggest obstacle to achieving football excellence in this country has just been flattened.

So now the ball is in our court and it’s up to us how we want to play it. Let’s build up relationships at every level with our league partners so that we can make necessary changes to our domestic game, starting with the scrapping of the uniquely Scottish interpretation of the Laws of the Game which in former times permitted a Hunnish approach to nullifying opponents with greater skill. I think a consensus for true, football ideals can be built among the supporters of just about all of the clubs that are still trading. I hope we nurture and develop it in the season to come.

  12. Dundee or Dunfermline ? I would readmit Dunfermline on the basis that they have been members of the SPL on more occasions than Dundee during the period of the financial wrongdoing of xxxxxxx and therefore have been exposed to cheating as much as any other SPL team

If Dunfermline had been able to gain more points of them during their term in the SPL is to say what Dunfermlines future might have been
