Hail Hail Billy McNeill. A boyhood hero. My first ever ‘celeb’ autograph age 10. Absolute gentleman. Prayers for Billy and his family.
The word Legend is often misused but when it comes to Billy McNeill it is the start when describing the man.

I haven’t met many people I consider to be working on a higher calling.
Billy was a prime example.
Celtic supporters event in Whitby North Yorks about 10 years ago.
Nice evening with various Lions and John Hartson .
Bit of an undignified clamour for autographs and selfies.
In steps the great man to put everybody in line and practical order to get their beloved handshakes,moments,autographs and photographs.
You could see clearly that he remained the leader of the lions even then.
We have lost the greatest of them all today boys and girls.

Like many other Celts, I met Billy on a number of occasions in his Ambassador role and at Celtic functions – always a gentleman but with a sharp wit to back up his team.
I recall a hospitality event at CP when Hibs were the visitors.
All in good nature, one of the Hibs contingent was giving it “we were first to wear the green”.
Billy’s riposte was “Aye, but do the big crowds over here no frighten you?”
It is always sad when one on our “Greats” passes on, but this is different – Billy was THE “Great”.
A little light in my heart went out this morning.
