How Celtic lose cups: red cards and penalties

514

I don’t know anyone who was confident Olivier Ntcham would score with his penalty against St Mirren earlier this month.  Our stats have been awful this season.  Ryan Christie scored his only attempt in a comfortable win over Hearts.  Moussa Dembele also scored his solitary attempt, against Alashkert, but Olivier and Scott Sinclair have each missed two, while Leigh Griffiths missed against Motherwell.  Seven out of 12 have been converted.

Those of you who are old enough to remember the last time Celtic did not win a domestic trophy will recall we went out of that particular Scottish Cup semi-final on penalties.

If you were Derek McInnes, you would have spent all week planning for this eventuality.  Hopefully, the point is not lost on Neil Lennon.  Celtic will take the game to Aberdeen, but if the tie is level in the latter stages of the initial 90 minute period, Aberdeen will sit every-deeper and play for penalties – which they will have a decent chance to win.

That reversal in the 2016 Scottish Cup semi-final aside, Celtic have only exited a cup tournament since Neil Lennon’s first tenure as manager after being reduced to 10 men.  Efe Ambrose conceded a penalty and was sent off in the 2016 League Cup semi-final against Ross County, and Craig Gordon was sent off in the 2016 Scottish Cup semi-final against Inverness.  The latter remains an infamous refereeing performance for the failure to award a penalty and red card Inverness’s Josh Meekings for punching a goal-bound header off the line.

Objectively, if Celtic are going to be stopped from collecting a treble treble, it is most likely to happen on Sunday, as a result of either a red card or a penalty kick competition.  We can plan for both.

Expect Aberdeen to wind up whomever they think is vulnerable to some referee attention – I’m looking at you, Scott.  The script has been written on this one.  Do not get drawn in, play the game on our terms, if anyone loses composure, let it be their daft full back (again).

None of us have confidence in our penalty takers, but practice helps (despite luddite beliefs).  Training will be light tomorrow.  It should consist exclusively of penalty kick practice.

  1. My memory of Henke & penalties is not as rosy as Lurkin & BP, I don’t have the statistics but remember Henke missing quite a few.

  2. I agree with Neil picking players that are our players for the games from here on in.

The Title was the most important reason to get players in that would help enable that to happen.

Ideally, I’d like to get Timothy to stay for 12 more months. Don’t think thats gonnae happen. :(

    Who knows tho. ;))

Corkcelt…I remember especially the penalty he missed v Boa Vista…I thought it might really cost us…but typically, he scores that winner in the second leg…

    Celtic Legend!

  4. Corkie…Henke missed 2 career penalties from 12 ( according to tranfermarkt ) scored 5 from 6 for Celtic…thought he scored more for us…then again I’m probably not reading it correctly ;-))

All “good” penalty kick takers will miss, the best ones want to take the next one after they miss, Henrik and these days Leigh G and Scotty S… if we get a pen on Sunday during 90mins Edouard, Christie & Sinclair will be the ones to try and grab the ball … hopefully whatever one will be going for a hat trick at that point :-)

  6. GFTB, My memory is that Henke wasn’t a particularly good penalty taker. Arguably the greatest player we ever had no doubt about that but not a great penalty taker.

  7. For GFTB,

    I wisnae there Last Weekend.

I went to so many Rez events.

I hope Celtic have an Annihilating Rhythm on Sunday where we open up Aberdeen with ease.

    RIP Keith – unforgettable!!!

In Henriks 7 years we didn’t get that many :-)

I thought he scored a few and also went through a wee spell of great free kicks but probably not remembered as a penalty kick taker due to the copious amount of headers and other goals from open play ..

  9. What is the Stars…from last night…yer question re hindsight…Fraudgers or Liewwell…is it…WITS out ;-))

Am not on Facebook but the good lady showed me a few of the attendees that were going that I grew up with, crazy mad stuff … those days were in another life :-)

Am sure they all had a blast, was never a Rez hardcore just a Saltcoats clubber :-)

  11. GFTB, I’m normally a great man for statistics but in this case I really don’t have a clue on many he took for us and what his success ratio was but it’s etched in my memory the feeling that penalty taking wasn’t on a par with his standard of excellence in everything else he did.

  12. Henrik missed about half a dozen penalties for us,1 was at Livingston away ,first game of the season, ended 0-0

RIP Tommy Smith one of the hardest footballer ever HH

Met him in Fuengerola about 30 years ago,had a couple of lunchtime beers with him, lovely guy, very quiet spoken,a gentleman, will post more tomorrow mate HH

  14. Henrik missed a costly one against Basel in the 3-1 home win against Basel in the 2002 EC playoffs where the keeper saved it with his trailing heel.

However, had he scored, we may well have gone through into the CL proper and missed out on Seville and all that.

    Whoooosh!

Too ragin’ about your positioning of the mighty Martin in the Celtic pantheon to realise!

  16. Ah Lurkin Tim, @ 21.40, That can’t be right, he must have taken 40 plus penalties for usj

  17. GFTB,

I really wanted to go but I didnae, I dinnae know if that makes sense.

Too many just wanna film things and not just NJOI the experience.

    Panopticon pish.

No Matter who plays midfield Sunday….. I reckon we will be Super Charged up for it. Aberdeen are a very hard team to beat and it will come down to a moment of Individual Skill or quality teamplay to get us a Win, Hopefully.

  18. Missed vital one in penalty shoot out against Valencia but penalties in shoot outs are probably not included in statistics.

  19. The photo of the black hole has been welcomed by Sevco as it shows there’s tunnel at the end of the light.

Apparently there could be billions of Galaxys. Still hope for them yet.

  21. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Gerry , as we discussed the other day , Brian McCLair , was a very good penalty taker especially those two against what was Rangers about ths time of year in 1987 .

  22. There you go…the internet doesn’t contain the sum of all human knowledge…zero definitive stats on Henke’s penalties…hope Tontine is scouring his memory ;-))

  23. Enjoyed the Henke video, I counted 29 goals from penalties but I might have blinked a couple of times.

  24. Apparently the assembly team for the T-Rex has been complaining about the amount of work involved in placing the massive skeleton on its specially designed frame.

But the Team Leader simply told them “Get it on!”

  25. Dallas 10.24pm

As soon as the penalty discussion was on I was hoping that would get you posting, I didn’t want to try and pass your knowledge off as my own :-) again I probably didn’t appreciate Choccy as much as I should have, I think Bada Bing mentioned earlier, as a bhoy I loved a Mark Reid penalty as well

  26. WTF…hundred million plus pounds to be spent on the UK’s MEP elections…just in time for Brexit…eh?

  27. THELURKINTIM on 12TH APRIL 2019 10:11 PM
