Limited time to build fitness for new recruits

Celtic have only one game before they meet Benfica in the Champions League, away to St Johnstone on Saturday.  The Perth team are bottom of the SPL without a win so far this season, so will not present a significant challenge, but Celtic could do with a sterner test.

Lassad Noiuoiu, Efe Ambrose and Miku Fedor each need to be stretched before they will be ready for Champions League football.  Even if they get a full 90 minutes on Saturday, so I can’t see either starting against Benfica a week on Wednesday, unless they possess uncommon natural fitness, or our injury crisis steps up a level.

What would Celtic supporters think, or where would Celtic be, with Wenger at the helm, but no trophies for the last 6 or 7 years?

How does he get away with it at Arse-nal?

You make these two out to be some kind of Celtic superstars who constantly came to our rescue or NEARLY turned the tide.

    Journeymen, no more no less.

  7. Don’t want to see Jackie Mac portrayed as some money grabbin’ bazza on here. I was at his testimonial against Ireland and I am pretty sure that after expenses, Jackie gave most of the cash to charity. One in memory of his late mother, and another for ex-pro’s who had fell on hard times. Think he joined Lenny as well on the Botham walky thingy this year as well.

As a player I thought he was good enough, not brilliant. There were a lot of players in the MON era who were being paid over the odds, and Jackie was one of the victims of the reality check that followed.

Your last sentence negates your suspect question.

Arsene is a very patient man. Rangers hung on grimly but crumbled spectacularly. I think it is mental that anyone thinks that highly debted clubs will still be in business within 2 years.

    The Piper Must be paid.

So you are saying that the EPL bubble will burst in two years and Arsenal will survive?

Who will they be playing against then?

    Us?

    In the SPL?

  11. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

I should perhaps have made my position clear.

I have an intense dislike for Wenger and consequently a similar dislike for Arsenal.

Apologies if I misled you Petec.

    No harm meant.

    To you.

  12. Smith and McLeish have had their chance and both walked out on Scotland, they should never be allowed back. I agree with Strachan or Joe J, both legends, either would be better than our current manager.

jackie McNamara was great servant to Celtic, didn’t think Simon was in the same bracket but he was a valued member of the team where we stopped the orcs winning/cheating to 10 in a row.

    Hail Hail

  13. Philbhoy, bizarre over reaction to a series of complimentary posts on two former Celts who are doing exceptionally well in management together.

I don’t think anyone said they were legends or on a par with the Lions but to suggest Jackie McNamara is a “journeyman, no more no less”, isn’t right.

With regard to the Liverpool game under Wim, yes we were beaten on away goals and courteousy of a wonder goal if I remember correctly, but I recall that tie as one that cemented our re-emergence to a UK and European audience. Barnes, Redknapp, Fowler, Owen, McManaman et al were behind for long periods of the tie.

Jackie gave more to Celtic than Donnelly but both played significant parts in the modern history of the club. To suggest otherwise isn’t right. There have and will be better players but they served the club well.

  14. Jackie Mac, great Celtic servant and team player………remember he came to our player of the year dance in Burghland , a quiet unassuming guy with no trace of big time Charlie about him.

Was really nervous about coming into St Philomena hall to meet 100 mad tims , said he was more nervous than before a CFC game.

He relaxed a bit when Bazzabhoys uncle Tel introduced him to the joys of 20/20 and my sister spilt a pint over his designer suit!

Real down to earth guy with a real love for the hoops and a respect for the punters.

Wish him and wee Sid every success.

    Hail Hail

The Roman Circus will stop at some point. There is going to be a real big clearout soon and more assets will be gobbled up by the Central banks.

Glasgow Celtic are situated very well for the coming monsoon, it is unavoidable and some of Football’s Greatest clubs will be swept away by it. That is the real shame as we won’t be facing some of the biggest names ever when we are at the top of the game.

“Stephen Pollock In Dubai” Commenting In The “Evening Times”….Advocated That The G.A. Should Sign Him On A ‘Bosman’.

Would Have Been Quite A Clever Strategy….

  18. Jackie said on his final contract offer from PL ,that Bobo paid more in tax, than his basic would be.PL phoned him when he was en route to Wolves to up the offer,Jackie gave his word to Wolves that he would sign for them.Another example of Celtic supporters who played for the Club getting the thin end of the wedge, compared to foreigners.

    I’m playing catch up.

I start taping the games on Sky at 6pm, and start watching at about 7.30pm so I can fast forward the commercials!

So I am a bit behind you. I usually catch up for the 9pm game.

Aye the bubble will burst, but it won’t be bursting in the foreseeable, infact, won’t be bursting in the next 10-15 years.

After the current Sky deal, there are other broadcasters waiting in the wings, who are willing to pump in obscene amounts of money.

  23. Scotpatsfan I’m using NFL game pass on the IPad all games live, though wife has Internet on now using the laptop and causing a little buffering

  24. Philbhoy, are you for real?

You have labelled Jackie Mac a journey man and I respectfully disagree for reasons below, posted by Tallybhoy

Jackie Mac was a wonderful servant to Celtic.

    – 349 games between 1995-2005

    – SPFA Young Player of the year 1996

    – SPFA Players’ Player of the year 1998

    – Scottish Football Writers’ Player of the year 2004

    – Captain of Celtic FC 2004-05

    You ask,” who are you?”

What level of detail will suffice?

Full name, date of birth or address?

I am Tommy Joad and I respectfuly post my opinions on CQN.

    Will that do?

There has never been a real recovery since the first wave of the Depression hit. All the Governments have done is Print money.

Debt clubs could Die in a day. I hope Celtic get themselves Totally out of Debt this season. I don’t like £5M debt. Its a killer in the environment we are in.
