Middlesbrough finished a point off the play-offs in the English Championship last season, which was not enough to save manager, Tony Pulis, from the sack. Pulis is an experienced hand with teams fighting relegation from the Premiership or looking for promotion to it, having worked at Stoke, Crystal Palace and West Brom.
A month after the sacking, Middlesbrough gave rookie, Jonathan Woodgate, the job, with former Celtic striker, Robbie Keane his assistant.
Football teams have a tendency to overcompensate for their last perceived mistakes when appointing a manager. Pulis was taken from a regular, if uninspiring, stock. They have not made that ‘mistake’ with Woodgate.
The former Real Madrid defender will bring colour and excitement to the Riverside, at least in the short-term, but his chances of out-performing Pulis next season are open to debate. Middlesbrough have the resources to attract managerial talent from most leagues in Europe or South America. While these territories have worked well for others seeking improvement in England, there are significant risks.
Like Sunderland, who appointed St Mirren manager, Jack Ross, a year ago, they could have looked to less-risky Scotland, but can you name an appropriate candidate who would be up for this one?
Appointing a rookie is a big roll of the dice, to be avoided if possible. But anyone who tells you appointing a sure-fire success is easy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. All you can hope to do is avoid sure-fire failures.

The businessmen will do their thing, they have their agenda, they’ll work it, it’s the same in most walks of life. They’ll try to get their way through fair means or foul, it’s the nature of the beast.

A tale of two transfers
Ironic, this weekend whilst David Turnbull and his advisors consider his 19 year old weekly worth, Real Madrid are similarly agent hawking Gareth Bale who was ‘the best player in the world’, but unable to establish himself in Madrid.
Under contract till 2022 Bayern Munich are the latest club likely to mibbees gamble, on his weekly worth in the fantasy land, where our club holds up the banner at the other end of the spectrum, of a well run football clubs.
Provincial clubs in Scotland, of which Motherwell certainly are, have a basic wage, appearance, and win bonus, for players unlikely to go beyond four figures a week. David Turnbull on the apprentice scale is unlikely to even reach what a full time pro in Lanarkshire enjoys.
Conservative, or even Daily Rancid estimates say Celtic have offered David Turnbull’s agents, £12,000 per week but the advisors appear to be holding out for £13,000 at Barnsley or any other dirty Northern town, that can bite the bullet, and buy SPL goods.
Reneging, on millionaire status by the time you are twenty one takes the balls of a true steel man, and I expect we’ll hear early in the week, we’ve moved on to Celtic targets.

Sorry I missed your post and apologies to everyone for reposting it next buts it’s important because you go to the heart of the matter.
The DR is only using the language that has been used before, calling the money owed to HMRC an unpaid liability.
In fact it was an unpaid PAYABLE that is overdue unless it meets 4 conditions that exempt it being treated as such.
Calling it a potential liability as RFC did in the proof offered to SFA from Grant Thornton circumvented the need to check if the conditions applied.
If you go to the Res12 Archive and check details under 10 August 2018 about a meeting with Celtic you will see a link to a document explaining how UEFA FFP Article 50, that only talks of “payables,” works.
The fact is the only folk who have the authority to confirm if an OVERDUE payable existed are UEFA which is why Res12 asked Celtic to ask them to investigate.
For unknown reasons this has been strongly resisted all down the line starting with Celtic who insisted the matter be resolved domestically.
That resistance continues and in fact the end of March 2011 grant period that caused the current investigation, that concentrates only on the monitoring period submissions by CW in June and September 2011, was removed from scrutiny for unknown reasons one of which would be RFC followed the rules but the non confirmation and evidence suggests otherwise.
This exclusion imo was an attempt to avoid the more than suspicious circumstances on which the licence was granted because of the seriousness of admitting guilt ie fraud.
All this is a long way of saying there has been no confirmation that false proof was offered and licence improperly granted.
The conundrum facing the SFA is they were given last June minutes of an HMRC meeting that show a PAYABLE existed from 21st March 2011 which is at odds with the proof provided to obtain the licence.
They were asked to comment but we are still waiting. The reference to the Giannina case in our latest letter was to ensure that unless SFA can say rules were properly followed at the end of March 2011 then that period had to be included in any CAS referral. It was an attempt to make sure the new Comp Off was aware the charges based on those minutes were incomplete.
The narrative from foregoing is that everything was being done since Sept 2017 to dump the blame on CW, who only repeated in June and Sept 2011 the slightly different language of the same false reason for there not being an overdue payable, that was used in the licensing application covering end of March.
Who was involved from Sept 2017 is a matter of concern and one Celtic, not shareholders, should be pushing and their failure to do so is equally concerning if not more.
Perhaps the Maxwell intervention is a sign Celtic are beginning to share concerns or it’s another long grass attempt to push matters until after the AGM in the hope it will all go away.

…it seems to accept the fact that there was unpaid tax, it seems to accept the fact that had Rangers declared it at the time Celtic and not Rangers would have been playing in the UCL qualifiers 2011-12 Season.
Is this really the case? Has this been established?

Ian Maxwell has revealed a decision over whether to pursue Rangers over “alleged irregularities” in the club’s application for a UEFA licence in 2011 could be made soon.
The SFA tasked its compliance officer with instigating a probe into the matter two years ago, which involves the Ibrox club’s unpaid tax liability at the time they submitted the application.
Had they disclosed the liability, Celtic would have been entered into the Champions League qualifiers the following season.
Rangers maintain the Five Way Agreement signed off by the SFA, SPL, SFL, the old Rangers and the Newco formed by Charles Green ensured the governing body had no jurisdiction in the case.
The SFA’s judicial panel ruled the matter must be heard by the Court of Abitration for Sport if there was intent to dole out punishment
SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell issued an update on the matter
And now chief executive Maxwell insists the issue could be looked at again in the near future.
He said: “I would expect that to come back to the board in the not-too-distant future.
“It (going to CAS) is still under consideration.
“We’ll come back on that in due course. I wouldn’t want to put a timescale on it.
“But I don’t think we would let it go for ever.”
Meanwhile, Maxwell insists new SFA president Rod Petrie is a misunderstood character, despite the Hibs chairman snubbing the media after he ascended unchallenged to the job.
Petrie’s appointment has been met with derision from critics who are eager to see meaningful change at the top of Scottish football.
But Maxwell believes perceptions will change and revealed there’s a plan in place to “humanise” the 63-year-old.
He added: “We’ve had a few conversations about trying to humanise him. That will really help.
“You’re never in a room and Rod’s not the smartest guy in it.
“And he’s got a sense of humour, he’s got real humility about him, he’s really good company.
“He just keeps it fairly well hidden, I suppose. So it’s about drawing that out over the period.”
Now, my understanding was that Rangers were arguing that; any breach came under the Craig Whyte era so under the 5 way agreement they had immunity, that the SFA had accepted this, which is why CAS needed to be involved.
Of course if it is, as The Record alludes, accepted that Rangers should have disclosed the unpaid tax in their declaration up to 31 May 2011, this was before Craig Whyte, and under the 5 way agreement New Rangers are responsible for Old Rangers Football rule breaches!!??

Of course the licence application had to be made by the end of March 2011 and not May as I’d stated. And that was before CW took over at Ibrox.
So, it still remains the case that the March 2011, outstanding tax payable from the WTC hasn’t been properly investigated and no known defence to the allegations have been submitted by any Rangers.
Despite what The Record says, initially stating the case revolves around “alleged irregularities” then determining… Had they disclosed the liability, Celtic would have been entered into the Champions League qualifiers the following season.
What they state is speculative, even if it is, to my mind, what should have happened.
Celtic’s reluctance to go to UEFA seems like a very poor decision, especially in light of the fact, their letter of the time shows a lack of confidence in the SFA’s ability &/or willingness to properly investigate.
I’ll read through the info on the Res12 website you recommend, thanks again for the clarification.

Re the boul’ David………He’s nineteen??? If Celtic have identified him as a bona-fide target worth the punt, I’d hope we’d try and make a workaround the current negotiation difficulties……If it’s the type of player we want.
The lad’s nineteen…….the age and maturity of his “agent” less clear. At nineteen our potential Bhoy is probably just following orders from the man in the suit. A former brief, relatively new to the agent game – he’s worth the watchin’ but not at the expense of getting the boy to Paradise.

With my definite lack of fitba nous I think the boy (not a bhoy yet) is a player … just Sportscene and listening to “pundits” that have worked with the boy … by all accounts he caught Neil’s eye playing against Hibs u-20s a good while back … agents are agents and will just look at £’s signs … which is their job, I think the player will decide even at the tender age of 19… by the way he is a Motherwell fan but I quite enjoy some players not being Celtic fans to start with… they probably appreciate it more when it happens :-)
