Never step into a great man’s shoes, Nadir

798

Remember Henri Camara?  Martin O’Neill paid a significant loan fee to sign him 10 years ago, in the considerable wake of Henrik Larsson.  Henri flopped and soon lost his place in the team but the weight of responsibility thrust upon his frame was considerable.  No one could come close to filling the gap left in the Celtic team.

Nadir Ciftci would do well to consider whose shoes he’s stepping into at Celtic.  Last summer’s striker signings, John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic could hardly muster a start the second half of the season.  Leigh Griffiths, who arrived 18 months ago, got the striker’s gig most weeks, but Leigh came to Celtic with as illustrious a heritage as Nadir.

Never step into a great man’s shoes, but Nadir’s not doing that.  This is the perfect time for a striker to join Celtic, I hope he has the appetite.

I see the great and the good in the media are flogging lyrical at the prospect of a prodigy arriving from Madrid.  None of this has come from Celtic.  The player may become available at some point but I reckon it remains a hard task convincing Real his immediate future should lie in Glasgow.

    Come stai amico mio?

Hard to argue against any of those three! And truly legendary defenders like those three will always stand out no matter size or time (and, damn, the Italians know how to defend!) …

but the game is changing alot, and players are much bigger now than they were even 20 years ago ….

and there are just as many good big ones now … guys that are big, but can still move well, and can play the ball too…

and at the end of the day, I will take a good big defender over a good small defender…

  2. Bryson was involved with the Cadette affair, me thinks. Me thinks he was very involved.

    How long ago was that?

I saw Cannavaro in the flesh a few times but there was one that particularly stuck out for me.

I was behind the goal for Australia vs Italy in WC 2006 when Italy scraped through thanks to a soft penalty. Materazzi had managed to get sent off for Italy and for the second half Australia were shooting into the goal I was at. It was the positioning and the reading of the game that made him great. It seems simple but he was excellent at predicting where the ball would be and always standing in the right place. He brought leadership as well.

It was a real clinic and no surprise they lifted the trophy. That was a real golden generation: Buffon, Cannovaro, Nesta (injured for the WC), Zambrotta, Pirlo, Totti, Toni, Del Pierro…..

Agreed. I think we should recognise in our thinking that attending to support is a choice every bit as much as watching but not attending.

As long as it’s the cost of watching by whatever means that is covered and equally met what is the difference?

At present too much of the cost lands on those who attend I think that has to change.

I refer again to the OST not as it stands at present but as a model to the future in terms of paying the same to watch on TV as an ST costs but covering all games.

To facilitate the levelling of payment make it monthly over a year rather than the up front loading in May.

  7. Welcome to Paradise Logan. May your arrival herald a continued lack of bulges in our onion bag.

Another Ronny signing. Someone with pedigree who needs in Ronny’s words: “a little love”.

    The Ashes.

Joe Root ( dropped on 0 ) hits a 118 ball century.Fasted century ever in an Ashes First Test..Some of the Australian bowling has been dire.Little point in super fast macho stuff when the pitch is like a Victoria Sponge.

    JJHS …

Except for AT’s free kick against Liverpool, most balls go over defenders heads, rather than under their feet!

however, there is some truth to what you say …. I’m 6’3″, so if it was simply about height, I’d be playing for celtic rather than chatting about them on a blog! :)

  10. That was a great article on young Henderson, you can tell he is an old head on young shoulders type of player, he gets Celtic, our game, our training, our players, the comforts of playing and training here, our manager, and what Celtic means to him, it’s young players like that we need around our club, it will rub off on other young players, it just goes to show that some pick up the mantle when put out on loan and get it, and others spit out the dummy, it’s a learning experience and if you use it well and dig in, you will rep the benefits, it’s a crossroads in his career, and reading that article makes me think that for him it worked, and who knows he me be the type of player to come through for us, and we won’t have to spend £5/£4/£5 million pound on, then again if he isn’t then we can always blame PL and the board right? Tired – looking forward to going on holiday in a couple of weeks.

  12. Auldheid,

There’s also the fact that we are not talking about CTV here but a national football channel and I doubt every game shown at 15 o’clock on a Saturday will be a Celtic game.

The SPFL has already paid a lot of money upgrading the facilities of smaller clubs to allow TV to be set up at their stadiums when they were playing sevco. Money that IMO will have been wasted if sevco get to the SPL as it’s unlikely they will be used often enough to encourage maintenance budgets by the clubs. Unless there is some form of Scottish football TV channel set up.

  13. Odegaard’s not for me thanks.

If he arrives, he will expect to play first team football from the off. Who do we drop in midfield?

I’m not convinced the ever increasing baggage growing around the lad is worth it.

I’d rather we develop our own youngsters, when a chance to step up is suitable.

  14. See I was mistaken earlier for Istanbul Bhoy.Although a great honour,it wisny me.I am having a wee mini break from the “Whingers”.

In saying that, seems a bit better today.I think they are just re-grouping.

Fabio Cannavaro was wonderful ( IMO ) Position , patience and timing .

When he was at Napoli as a schoolboy , he was told to be gentle on Maradona .Cannavaro replied with a – Stuff that – I’m a defender

  16. I see Spurs will be hosting a couple of NFL games a season once their new stadium is completed in 2018

Smart guy is Charles Green… he thought about this two years ago with the tie-in with the Dallas Cowboys

How did that idea pan out?

turkeybhoy … since I was the one who inadvertently bestowed that honour upon you, I will say you are welcome! :)

and dont think of us as whingers… we are just optimistically challenged! but we all just want but have different ways of getting to the same goal … a better Celtic team on the park ….

Someone put up a document in relation to the Jim Farry removal just the other day

It most certainly mentioned Bryson in it, with Farry referring to Bryson’s guidance on the issue with regards Jorge Cadette delay in approving his registration ?

sounds like a great trip. dont know much about SS … that’s the bluegrass musician? …although, I have learned about a lot of good musicians on CQN, so, if you like him, I may have to give him a listen. Travellerbhoy posted some really neat stuff last night that I had never heard of …

Funnily enough, I think Quintana is looking quite good ( I haven`t watched today`s stage yet) but Contador less so. Mind you, Alberto does seem to pace himself well. I was hoping the Big Four would be neck and neck come the Mountains but Stage 2 put a bit of a a spoke in that! I don`t have access to The Ashes so my watching decision was made for me. I am kind of glad but trying to avoid Ashes updates so as to enjoy Highlights later is quite difficult!

Bryson was indeed up to his neck in the Farry /Caddete affair

I seem to remember that after the roasting Farry took it was decided not to put Bryson up for questioning as his team thought he would be ripped a new one so they conceded

defeat and Farry fell on his sword .
