No bad blood with Eddie, low expectation of Hibs

282

Eddie Howe was generous about Celtic when asked during the press conference announcing him as Newcastle manager.  In his view, he was unable to take on the task of managing such a club without his regular backroom staff, whom he was unable to convince to move to Glasgow.  This was the reason he gave Celtic when rejecting them in May, although I was sceptical then.

Compare that to our own Ange Postecoglou, who accepted the job with nothing more than a list of names detailing those he would work with at Celtic.  He knew none of them.  The contrast could hardly be starker.

Six months later it is easy to forget what shape the club was in when Ange arrived.  A threadbare squad, minus the want-aways, a new CEO in his first job in football with zero on-the-ground experience of European football.  Eddie Howe didn’t have the self-belief that Ange has, but Eddie was right to doubt the job could be done with anything less than the A Team.

Newcastle may have all the money the sovereign investment fund of Saudi Arabia can put their hands on, but spending it effectively in January, tempting transformative players into a club marooned at the bottom of the table, will take more than a jab in the arm before bundling them onto a plane bound for Newcastle.

No bad blood with Eddie, he made the right decision, right for him, right for Celtic, although maybe not right for Newcastle, who failed to lift themselves off the foot of the table last night because of a late equaliser from our old pal Teemu Pukki.

I know what you are thinking.  Hibs bounced Newco out of the League Cup a week ago, can they repeat the result in the league at Easter Road tonight?  Before a win over 10-man St Johnstone on Saturday, that Hampden result was the only time they avoided defeat in six outings.  They are a poor team, dare we expect anything……..?

Re Turnbull. “the 10 touch turn is his worst attribute. I decided to watch him for the whole second half in Germany and it was clear to me he is nervous to use his left foot. no long passes, short passes, first touch , nothing. He literally did not touch the ball with his left at any point. As a 99% right footed, and crap player , i know that fear of a longish pass with the left but even i tackled with the left.”

Good point that I bore my mates with. The first coach I ever had, at Hawkhead Juveniles in 1962, made us train for 50% of each session with our weaker foot, with the objective in his words of

“making one foot as bad as the other!” So for an hour, twice a week, I dribbled, passed, trapped, crossed and shot with my left foot. I also practiced by myself. I was a winger, and it seemed like in no time, I was taking corners with either foot.

Oddly, this ambidexterity seemed to help me when I played table tennis for the Bellahouston Youth Club. One of my team mates, and doubles partner Alex Gray, who later went on to play for East Fife and famously captained the Jags team that beat us 4-1 in the 1971 League Cup Final, was frequently bamboozled when I suddenly changed my serving hand when practicing against each other. It won me a lot of points!

I was never able to write left handed, or serve left handed in lawn tennis, but the ability to play fitba using either foot stayed with me my entire less than illustrious career. I am continually amazed that so many professional players are so pitiful with their weaker foot.

Well done Teemu Pukki, arguably a better footballer than the guy he replaced at Celtic but crashed and burned here due to Moneyball, lastminute.com, nonsense …..

    ————–

    … and waist size perhaps?

  3. BSR – I’d argue that the odd result apart we’ve under- performed over the piece, and we’re seeing that in four main ways:

    1. We’re plummeting down the coefficient table;

    2. We used to be going toe to toe with Barcelona and Bayern, now we’re competing with Betis and Bayer;

    3. We’ve been outperformed in Europe by Them for 3 seasons in a row now; and

    4. We’ve allowed Them to catch-up and overtake us in just 4 years.

I accept that money is a factor and the gap between us and the Barcelona’s and Bayern’s is enormous, but where we’re concerned it only seems to work one way – money is said to be the difference between us and Bayern, but we don’t seem to regularly beat teams who have much less money than us – Cluj, Ferencvaros, Athens, Sparta Prague, etc.

I also appreciate that after the dark times in the 80s and 90s the success we’ve had has been amazing, but we’ve never really pushed on – I imagine that what we do now is largely the same set-up as we had when MON was around and that was almost two decades ago! We’ve stood still – the football world has moved on. They have overhauled us in 4 short years and we’re now playing catch-up. Yes they’ve spent big and had advantages, but they’ve spent less than us in that time and we were so far ahead of them it wasn’t true (a quadruple-treble would attest to that) so I’d say we’ve punched below our weight overall and that we are indeed stale!

Just turned on Sky sports to hear thick Boyd say ‘everybody thinks Kent is the best player in Scotland’ or words to that effect . Mute telly immediately .

To the guys who have had the wonderful football careers criticising David Turnbull I salute all of you. I love this site but some of the stuff posted is complete nonsense. Of course David Turnbull could strengthen his weaker foot but some of the comments about an excellent young Celtic player belong in the tabloids. (where they were probably read in the first place). Cqn must have some team past and present. I suppose even if he does no work on his left foot there will be a new whipping bhoy next week.

MON warned Celtic supporters about “The Slow Lane” was about to take control of Celtic’s recruitment.

    Celtic supporters response was, ….

    “MON is a dinosaur!”

“MON is a long ball merchant!”

“Wee Gordon will be a breath of fresh air!”

and loads of other deflections, blah, blah, blah, etc, etc.

MON was replaced by a puppet of whom, PL said,….

“Gordon is a CEO’s dream kind of manager.”

Point is, Celtic fans since 1994 regime change event, have been doormats. Easy meats. There to be took.

MON elevated the status of the club to the point where we fancied our chances in any joust, with any giant.

In effect, MON hid the big glaring lie about Celtic.

The lie that we’re all in this together.

    Look at it since!

Even as MON was marching us to a European final, the bitches on the board were bitching about, the status and gravitas, that were being bestowed upon MON, from English MSM, and instead of channeling that positive vibe the club was enjoying from such status, the board minions, led by Brian Quinn, and his ‘carefully’ released text about,….

“Our esteemed manager!” What was that about? Green eyed monster Quinn?”

Was MON’s rise a threat to Quinn, and the other faceless wonders who sat next to him in the directors box?

We have a club run by people, minions, who don’t like to see the status of our manager rise as it might give the manager some leverage in any negotiations.

So if Celtic manager isn’t in effect, a puppet, like Strachan, then that won’t sit well with the board?

MON achieved what he did, despite the board.

Same with Stein, McNeill, Hay, Burns, Jansen, Rodgers, Ronny, NFL the 1st time.

Ange? For me, Jury is out as to whether he is a puppet?

Or is he aware that he’s going to be pushed, to save the old firm?

Or have the Celtic board already bunged the other half of the old firm so they won’t go bust and let Ange win the league this season as throwing it would be too obvious, because Celtic PLC know that even hard to reach happy clappers might be forced into a rethink at renewal time?

Dominic McKay was a PLC coached actor,…

PLC Geppetto to Dom, “When season tickets are sold out, that’s the cue for you to resign, its all explained in this brown envelope. Thanks.”

    Who would rule it out?

  11. Spidey101

Nobody has out performed or overtaken Celtic, despite the environment, and mini implosion which we survived. Their predecessor existence out performed themselves, all the way to extinction via Manchester.

In the equivalent period of the new club’s existence Celtic’s revenue for player sales is something like £112 Million to the new clubs £8M.

All the more fuel to your fire? – but we mustn’t let the loss of a tenth consecutive title cloud the big picture, and we’ll see Celtic spend again in January, in an effort to win the pre determined handicap chase, called the SPL.

Celtic need a political change of ‘Direction’, which would admittedly include new football men, but to debate we’re overtaken isn’t real, Sevco have won nothing in Scotland aside from the bounce game empty stadium 55 (ahem) never mind Europe, where they are unbankable pariahs, who fell at the first against a p@ss poor Brondby.

Morelos has spent most of the first half trying to wind up Porteous under the nose of an oblivious Beaton . Porteous , to his credit , just laughing at the useless wee cokehead .

Bore of a game between two rather poor teams .
