Sevco need clarity on SPL vote more than the actual votes

1395

News that Dundee United will vote against allocating a place in next season’s SPL to Sevco confirms what we suggested yesterday, that sentiment has swung against the notion.  Motherwell’s innovative idea of allowing fans (who have already expressed overwhelming opposition to the idea) a vote is further evidence that even hard-pressed clubs are prepared to make financially difficult decisions.  Suggestions that the Motherwell board should grow a pair and take responsibility themselves have some merit.

Stewart Milne has denied BBC reports that Aberdeen have decided to vote against but I expect this is a matter of due process more than any genuine indecision.

There was a feeling this morning that matters could be brought to a head sooner than 4 July if enough clubs publicly declared against Sevco.  This would suit Charles Green’s company as they would be able to prepare offers to Rangers players (who they are able to sign) knowing where they are likely to end up.  If they are forced to wait until 4 July, Sevco will not know what squad requirements they will need for next season before making a decision on what Rangers players to offer employment to.

More than SPL football, Sevco need clarity.  A rush to declare against them might seem harsh but it would be enormously beneficial rather than being forced to wait a further 12 days.

I believe that the Hateley “new player” thing is to do with Hateley propensity for turning most “Rangers” related news into that very expression.

Nasmith coming back? It will be like signing a new player.

Blooding young players (through necessity) ? It will be like signing a new player..

Apprently, Hateley has made the same comment on many an occasion.

I can answer that for myself very plainly.

I love Celtic more than I love football. Celtic is a bigger part of my life than football, and I would love the institution of Celtic, being a Celtic fan, being part of the Celtic Family, even if I turned my back on the game … which I will if the SPL vote ends in anything other than a Third Division NewCo.

This might lead some people to believe that I hate Rangers more than I love football, but that is simply not true. My wish is for Rangers to be gone, and that does not make me a hater.

Let me tell you what a lifetime of seeing hate first hand – whether in football, or religion, or politics – has taught me.

Those who hate – and I mean truly hate, those who hate obsessively, and take up causes and join organisations and live it and breathe it – NEED the object of that hate in their lives. These people hate themselves, and they use the object of their hate as their psychological fallback, telling themselves they are superior, that The Others are lesser mortals … you can see these people everywhere, on the march with the EDL and the BNP … and at Ibrox.

I hate their ignorance, their bigotry, their superiority, their intolerance and their lack of any self-awareness as to what they are.

I do not need them – I do not want them – in my life. I want them gone.

When they have gone, I will be a better person because the part of me that has been forced for all these years to live with hate will be exorcised forever. This world will be a better place without them.

If my hate for them were so profound that it eclipsed my love for Celtic, imaging one without the other would be impossible, and it’s not. I define myself by what I love more than by what I hate. That might well be what makes US different from THEM, and we ARE fundamentally different.

We go across the world making friends, because that is who we are. They revel in the “no-one likes us we don’t care” mentality. They embrace terms like “No Surrender” and “We Are The People.”

Yet have no such slogans, no such ideology. We do not feel superior to them, but different … and that is crucial.

Being a Celtic supporter enhances my life. It makes good days better. It makes bad days easier to bear. It make friendships stronger, relationships tighter. It is unifying, clarifying, cleansing and uplifting. It is everything.

I never use the phrase “Old Firm” because it is not who I am, or what we are.

I will not miss them, or mourn them, or pity them.

They are the antithesis of everything I believe in.

@BBCchrismclaug: #SPL clubs are to meet next Thursday to discuss implications of a newco vote. #SPL board expected to put forward recommendations.

    ———————————————————————————————————

Could it be that someone has actually looked at the rules and have seen that even having a vote is ‘ultra vires’. That any such vote is open to legal challenge by the likes of Dunfermline or Dundee becuase the ‘member’ proposing to transfer the share is ‘deed’. Even their solicitors must be advising that any ‘share’ cannot be given to a company without 3 years accounts (or even a bank account) or a even membership of the SFA.

  15. “It’s understood the SPL board will make recommendations on various outcomes and scenarios.”

What exactly is there to recommend?

  16. I understand that every SPL move looks suspicious but it may just be to have some proposal ready for the choosing of Club 12 once Sevcon has been disregarded.

Or does that seem too much like common sense?

  17. jimtim,

do you think doncaster can do these things without the backing of the rest of the board?

  18. !!Bada Bing!! on

Disappointed that Kittoch is currently ahead of me in the Euro predictor, what he knows about football can be inscribed on an ant’s ba!!$ with a chisel.

  19. I dont think theres a great deal to panic about here. The spl proposals may well be to see who becomes club 12 in the event of a no vote. Both Dunfeline and Dundee will have claim to this and this will be to propose a vote towards entry. Remember Doncaster isnt the board alone. Eric Reilly and Stephen Thomson are on it so there will be no carve up.

WOW …….. I honestly wish I could express my sentiments / feelings like that.

    SOME MHAN

What I will say is that…

I am not a person who would ever hate anyone…….I have resisted their hatred all my life. However, I do hate the OO for what they stand for, and for how they behave……… It is not a nice feeling, but it is there, I’m afraid, and there is no use me denying it….

  21. Doncaster can plot all he wants. Lord Carloway will not be influenced. Whichever Law Lord hears the Prima Facie illegal registration case will be independent and will not be influenced. Whoever hears the case for avoiding 11 years of social taxes will be independent and will not be influenced

The idea that the SPL could or should be making a recommendation without knowing the outcome of all of the above is in itself ridiculous.

A Newco has to have a 3 year fiscal budgetary plan. It has to show it has enough resource to complete the season. It should have a licence. It has to have certainty of tenure over an acceptable stadium

Additionally it has to have players and a management team.

Does it have any of these things right now ? Probably not, so what could the board recommend ? And that’s before we even get to Sporting Integrity.

A no vote is inevitable. Steven Pressley hit the nail squarely on the head today, when he said Scottish Football is trying to reinvent itself for the benefit of Rangers, not for the benefit of Scottish Football

Scottish Football doesn’t have a lot going for it these days, however as Romanov rightly pointed out it still has the highest average per capita attendances at matches.

Lose the fans and lose the game. It’s almost all we have left.

The SPL should stop making Rangers their #1 priority and focus on the game. Rangers have to die to be reincarnated. How they reinvent themselves is exactly the same as any other club.

Celtic survived and prospered after a near death experience, because Celtic fans delivered. Nobody helped, there was not even a suggestion of help or league reconstruction.

Rangers need to find the same level of energy and resource. I suspect we survived precisely because we knew nobody would help. Rangers are about to die because they thought they would get the help they have always had.

Every club eventually finds it level. Rangers fans will decide if that level is to be Queens Park for the 21st Century or if they eventually get to sit at the top table again

In the meantime the rest of us have an opportunity to play in a completion that hasn’t been fixed, hasn’t been corrupted for the first time since Murray arrived at Ibrox

  22. Kojo….

Since February 14th,today is the lowest in the fortunes of GA/IA/L…..

For Them, the Clock has never been closer to Midnight….and Extinction…

Those who are suggesting that the GA may not be able to compete in any league next season are increasingly sounding credible, rather than just hopeful…

Wonderful to see Alex Thomson sticking it to them in his latest blog….

Can Tebow play in goals for us….?

  23. If it wasn’t for Celtic I wouldn’t love football. I try not to hate.

I loathe, despise, disdain, diss everything and anything to do with that shower of anachronistic, bigoted, violent nasty cretins who call themselves ‘fans’ of a club that is no more than a front for the ideas of the lowest of the low loyalist.

They’re not worth the pain of hatred. And the sooner they realise they’ve lost everything dear to them, the better.

God rot them, and the devil take them to the corner that’s reserved just for them.

They, and their ideas gave credence to The Black & Tans,The Shankhill Butchers. Need I say more? They are up to their ears in ordure. Soon they will choke on it. And they managed this feat all by themselves.
