Short-term fix for staple Euro strategy

985

There’s always a bit of reticence signing a player who has been away from his previous club for four months. Carlton Cole hasn’t played since starting West Ham’s final games of last season, and presumably has only trained in isolation since then.

Expectations of a quick return, should Celtic offer him a contract, have to be tempered with the realisation that he’ll be at least a month away from full fitness, but by then we will be set to face Molde away.

One aspect of our play that will concern Ronny Deila is that we’re short of attacking variation. The high ball forward to Samaras, so long our staple on the road in Europe, is not an option. This will be the reason why Carlton is training at Lennoxtown this week.

I’d expect a short-term deal to be concluded between now and January, to give both sides a chance to check out the fit.

  2. We do like a good moan dont we, good ol Celtic, unlimited moaning material. I was thinking before the Aberdeen game, lose this and we will have a moan fest on here that will last until we overhaul them in the league, regardless of whatever else happens.

  3. Tea Time news from EuroSport….

Jozo Simunovic is a doubt for Celtic’s Scottish League Cup third-round tie against Raith Rovers at Parkhead on Wednesday night.

The Croatian defender missed the 6-0 Premiership win over Dundee on Sunday with a twisted ankle. Right-back Mikael Lustig (hamstring) and midfielder Stefan Johansen (thigh) return from injury but it is still too early for midfielder Stuart Armstrong (back) while striker Leigh Griffiths is receiving on-going treatment on a calf problem but is available.

Provisional squad: Gordon, Lustig, Blackett, Boyata, Simunovic, Izaguirre, Ambrose, Johansen, Bitton, Brown, Forrest, Rogic, Commons, Mackay-Steven, Ciftci, Griffiths, Stokes, Janko, MacGregor, Bailly.

  4. Very much like the idea that Ronny will decide about oul Calton.

Which is just as well since a straw poll on here suggests otherwise.

    Just watched the dreaded video

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZVNjFH1B4w

Big, strong, two footed, headed goals, – but that was then I suppose…

New manager at West Ham, so getting his wages off the books so he could sign his own guys makes sense.

Although older than both Sutton and Hartson when they signed for us, he fits the same profile. At 31 he is one year older than Samaras.

As for injuries, well here’s a site with his injury record for the past 13 years.

    http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/players/657/carlton_cole_injury.html

Twice fined 20 grand by the FA, once for a bad joke when England played against Ghana and then for giving an abusive social media Spurs fan some advice about sex and travel on social media. He asked for his fine for the bad joke to be donated to a specified Ghanaian charity.

Frankly, since he’ll be able and willing to handle himself in the SPFL, it’s likely to be the referees who have the biggest say in his availability.

Paul said it best for me though. At 6’3″ and with his ability and experience he could be a real ‘other’ option for us. Ronny has known he needed a target man striker and CC fits that bill.

If we can take the strain off LG by signing him then qualifying from the the EL group would bring him into play in Europe too.

  5. Piled on St.Johnstone to pump the Zombies at this stage of the competition last year, forgetting that St.J were chock-full of wannabe Huns, who could barely bring themselves to cross the halfway line, and had an apologist manager from NIron who could only lavish praise on Sally’s unmentionables after they won easy.

Common sense says back warbo’s Wunderkind to cruise it tonoght, but…

It’s THEM. And I just can’t. And St.J are 4/1, and the joy of winning money as the Huns go down…

  6. I am confused, not hard granted, but I thought that Shiftkey was our new target man !

Tho it does make sense we get another striker in, albeit a might late, but better late than never I suppose.

    Just catching up, belter CMac.

The hun will win tonight, easy money they are, I used to think like that, but whether I bet on them or not will make not a blind bit of difference, so I will happily make money from them all day long.

  9. HH y’all!

About halfway to Portland Oregon right now. Any Pacific NW CQN folks lurking?

Trying to find out if Kells bar still show Celtic games- for tomorrow’s game.

Internet a wee bit patchy at 32,000 ft!

    Any info very much appreciated

  10. TET, I know – it’s just taking that first step…

    The St.J price, tho’…

All because of the media hype around the Hun?

Can’t resist the 8/1 on offer for St.J win and both to score. I doubt the Huns will miss their penalty tonight.

  11. Laurie Ross has signed a 5 year deal, must admit I don’t know much about him but I hope he can play left back.

  12. Just said hello to Carlton Cole outside the Apple shop,he’s a big bhoy, looked surprised at so many recognising him.

  13. Ach well being positive didn’t last long did it? Carlton Cole will do very well when he gains full fitness. Celtic fell apart in Europe when Samaras left? I am sure he played fir Neil Lennon and Gordon Strachan in embarrassing defeated in Europe. Is this the same Samaras who had a miserable scoring record in the worst league in the world? Oh and did he not cost Celtic the league by failing to score at Ibrox from a penalty? No one wanted him when he left Celtic , he ended up at WBA, then they saw his ‘talent’ then he left, and is playing for a team that looks like an anagram. If only Celtic had kept him we would be odds on to win the Champions League. Next Wayne Biggins, why did Celtic not give him a chance…

  14. BSR-He was too busy giving autographs and selfies, seemed genuinely overwhelmed at all the attention, plenty of time for folk ,always a good sign.HH

  15. So With the massive efforts of radio Clyde reminding everyone every ten minutes today of rangers massive game tonight I wonder if rangers despite being on TV tonight will get a bigger crowd than Celtic the holders will get tomorrow with no TV

    yeah shameless Frank’s twin Bro.

& correct de muendo Bertie Frank’s twin Bro certainly did miss that very rare pen

@ rent a ground against the old tax dodgers & zombie numb skulls by putting

the ball @ the exact same position of the goal frame when he took a pen against

the same sex offender goal keeper one does not have to be a rocket scientist

to say well I’ll put my pen @ the opposite side of my last pen against him oh

well that’s now in the past & said league title should have been stripped from

the tax dodgers FC for being cheats & going Banked rupt to get out of the big

shady financial mess they where in simple as that

  18. Darnell Fisher is, of course, on loan at St Johnstone.

Has he actually played for them yet this season? Is he likely to feature tonight?

If he does I am sure he will receive a warm welcome!

    HH!!

  19. Burnley 78

Yeah that’s Radio Clyde for you anyone who says anything negative about

there beloved Sevco 5088 International & it’s & next caller please.

aye right a shower of hypocrities & liars.

  20. Don’t worry Jobo Baldie so the BBC Shameland will be roaring on their beloved

international dodgers to hopefully another nightmare for them even with their

friend’s in black help it’s going to be the bbc shameland comedy channel

tonight that’s if Mr T Right’s team get there act together & are up for said

tussle or it’s curtains for Perth as far as the LC is concerned this season.

  21. Burnely 78 –

I’d say that it’s virtually certain that Triggers Broom FC will get a bigger crowd tonight than we will tomorrow.

I’ll be at Celtic Park but having looked at the online ticket site I’d guess we might not yet have sold even 5,000 (honestly!) tickets.

Another certainty is that there won’t be the usual paradise windfall half time draw!! (the biggest half time prize in football don’t you know)
