The Hooiveld – Samaras point

718

Our best wishes to Jos Hooiveld, 28, who has managed to resurrect his career at Southampton 23 months after completing an unsuccessful move to Celtic.  Southampton, newly promoted to the English Championship this season, sit top of the division, with Jos a key part of their success.

The big defender clearly has more than he was able to demonstrate during his time here, despite Celtic clearly being in need of a strong central defender.  Last night, after Georgios Samaras was send forward to lead the line, it occurred to my just how unsuitable he is as part of a front two.  All that gutsy energy, running and yes – bravery – both in terms of diving into challenges and always being available for a team mate, no matter what feedback he is receiving from the stands, is hidden when he’s up front.

Give him space to gallop into on the wing or let him find his own Southampton.

  1. West Wales Celt on

I recall at various junctures, when there was speculation about the Celtic manager’s position, calls for Martin’s return were seen as fanciful. Martin was waiting for a big club. Martin won’t live with budget restraints.

Now Martin goes to a lower premier league club and has reportedly agreed necessary budgetary restraint.

    I mean Martin, Sunderland?

    Sigh…

  2. Good morning from Mk where it’s a little chilly but we’ll see the sun today.

Thanks to ‘James Forrest is Lennon says @ 00.31’ for the enlightened appraisal of the absolutely farcically embarrassing situation Stewart and the SFA find themselves regarding Whyte being declared bankrupt.

You couldn’t make it up, Regan claims the SFA don’t scrutinise documents submitted by clubs and further states it’s down to the clubs to ensure they follow the rules. Rangers, in their submission state they didn’t know they had broken any rules.

But…it’s feckin BALTIC oot there. Three times I nearly went on my James Hunt walking down the drive, then again when diving into the shop. No fun at all. Be careful, especially some of the more “experienced” posters on here (BT, very much directed at you :-))) )

  4. Morning all from gay Paree, overcast and rainy today (9C max).

Despite losing the other night, I reckon the Bhoys can keep the recent momentum going on Sunday.

Hopefully, injuries to Joe and Vic aren’t too bad (anybody got any info?) and it’s good to know there are others getting off the treatment table onto the park.

I saw in the Hootsman, that SFA punishment for Whytie could be anything from “a £50 fine up to a £1000 fine and one-year suspension”.

A fine would be a slap on the wrist but any kind of susênsion would be delicious.

    Wouldn’t bank on it though…

I’ve been to the office; I got flogged at the office; I’ve come home from the office and the only ice for miles is the ice in my gin and tonic which I’m going to get well flogged with. A night of booze and loud aggressive rebel music awaits.

Oh! and it is not very sunny here either and the Gold Coast is now the crime capital of Australia. I did warn people that is where all the huns go to live.

  8. Good Morning CQN

Due to continuing inclement weather conditions, for the walk from Central Station this morning, I decided to pile on the extra wooly and waterproof weather beaters, result is – I’m now nearly at work but sweating like Lee Evans.

  9. Top of the morning to you all from a clear, sunny but frozen Fife.

In my lifetime of living here in Scotland I have invariably found that there are two sets of rules. One for the masses and one for the chosen few. The chosen few usually can be seen slinking off to meetings of an evening holding small flat attaché cases which hold their Masonic regalia.

What are hard and fast rules and regulation for us lesser mortals seem not to apply to this preferred group to whom the rulebook does not apply or if it does it is interpreted in the most beneficial way possible to help the “brother in distress”.

Now there will be Masons on our board and in our support but as football clubs go Rangers are the chosen ones. It was said at one time that Masonic membership was obligatory for playing staff!

So whatever befalls Rangers in their troubled future they will always be the exception to the rules that are made for others. We know this.

Closely behind Rangers in the Most Masonic top ten are the SFA and over the years they given us many good examples of how the rules can be bent to accommodate their brethren.

Latest example comes this morning in the Herald where it is stated by the SFA with regard to (what we were told would be) their new tough and exhaustive set of “Fit and Proper Person rules:– An “illustrative and not exhaustive” list of relevant facts makes reference to a person who has been disqualified within the previous five years.

So there you have it. In other words; It does’ny coont!

I suspect that those of you who have been poring over the SFA rule book knew in your heart of hearts that the old I.D.C. would kick in.

  10. Dec 2 2011 by Colin Rutherford, Kilmarnock Standard

RANGERS player Kirk Broadfoot was involved in an angry confrontation with fans after his side’s 1-0 defeat by Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Police had to intervene when the 27-year-old defender became involved in a row with supporters as he drove along Kilmarnock’s Dundonald Road.

It is understood that Broadfoot was in the car with his father and nephew when they were spotted by what are understood to have been Rangers fans.

Sources at the Ibrox club have said that the group of supporters started striking the player’s Audi as he drove past.

Broadfoot’s father then got out of the vehicle to remonstrate with them.

The player himself then intervened and became involved in an angry scene.

“In the heat of the moment he may have said one or two regrettable things,” said a Rangers insider.

Police arrived on the scene and told Broadfoot to get back into the car and drive off.

Officers spoke to the fans involved, but no arrests were made.

The row came after Broadfoot was targeted by some of the Rangers support during the Rugby Park match and was seen trading insults with supporters during the match.

  12. Lads regarding the SFA should these checks not have been done before Mr Whyte took over.

Either UEFA have had a word or they don’t know the rules again.

I also think the SFA are trying to avoid the main issue the European licence issued to Huns because if there is nothing dodgy to see why not just come out and say.

I think they’re are coming out with the Mr Whyte story so no one pursues the euro licence or I’ve got it completely wrong.

    Hmmmmmm….

TOP BRASS at UEFA last night warned Rangers face expulsion from European football next season unless the club’s financial house is put in order.

Record Sport can reveal that as things stand, the SPL leaders would be denied an £18million ticket into the Champions League even if Ally McCoist led his side to a fourth consecutive league title – but Rangers sources insist they still have four months to ensure their accounts are signed off and submitted to the SFA ahead of the March 31 deadline.

The Ibrox club have breached UEFA president Michel Platini’s tough new Financial Fair Play Regulations by publishing their latest set of account WITHOUT having them signed off by an independent auditor.

On Wednesday night, the club announced their annual financial figures for the year ending on June 30 to the PLUS Market but, for the first time in the club’s history, the figures were not approved by appointed accountants.

Edinburgh firm Grant Thornton have refused to discuss why they have not signed them off but UEFA have made it clear Rangers will be denied entry into the Champions League or the Europa League unless their accounts are rubber-stamped before the end of the current campaign.

It’s understood Rangers have until December 31 to publish a fresh set of figures and then lodge them with Companies House in Edinburgh.

But if those results are not given a clean bill of health by the auditors, the club’s chances of being granted a licence in time for next season will be damaged further.

Although the situation would then become ever more serious, the stricken club believes the vital date for Euro approval will not arrive until next March.

A UEFA statement read: “Glasgow Rangers FC, as with any club participating in UEFA competitions, will have to go through a licensing process which the national association in question manages.

“Subsequently, the national association (not UEFA), the SFA in this case, will assess whether or not the club has fulfilled the mandatory licensing criteria.

“This will take place in March/April. If the answer is yes, the club can take part in UEFA competitions next season and if not, they won’t receive a licence.”

The SFA, who last night announced their own probe into Rangers owner Craig Whyte, are already aware of the breach in Platini’s policy. They are now bracing themselves for the potential fall-out should they be forced to freeze a member club out of European football.

The Hampden beaks refused to comment on the situation last night but, as things stand, they would have to turn Rangers down flat.

UEFA’s Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations article 47 spells out the need for all financial results to be signed off by auditors. It says: “Annual financial statements must be audited by independent auditors.”

And last night an SFA insider informed Record Sport that Rangers will have to “work extremely hard” between now and the spring if they are to pass UEFA’s criteria.

The source said: “When Rangers submitted their application for this season they were up front about a number of financial issues they were dealing with.

“They were in dispute with the tax man but this was declared and, as it was a legitimate dispute, it was allowed and they still satisfied the criteria.

“But if they do not satisfy the criteria this time then they won’t get a licence for Europe.

“There is a lot of work to do before they can qualify. Right now Rangers and the SFA are in a difficult position. The club has an obligation to provide a signed set of accounts and if they are unable to do so then their application cannot be approved.

“It really is becoming quite a serious mess.”

It was aimed at nobody in particular, it is now just a sad fact and widely reported. It was the talk of the office today and all the locals I work with were slating it big time, so much so that they said it was notorious as far back as the seventies. I used to train and sometimes play for a couple of teams down there, I gave it away becasue it was full of huns who wouldn’t pass the ball to me. There are of course very many affluent and good area’s there too.

If I wanted to dig at a poster, any poster, on here… I would say nothing less to him on the blog than I would to his face.

  21. Re this whyte story,

Does anyone actually believe the SFA (and thems) were unclear as to the content of the Articles of Association?

Isnt this the same Articles of Association that were revisited, reviewed, re written when Mr McBride took them to task on behalf of a Member Club? the same Articles of Association that Stewart Regan admitted to being from a bygone age and no longer fit for purpose, that when re written would have been shared with the Member Clubs?

Lets for the sake of argument say the SFA were unaware of mr whytes past and they took the submissions at face value, that would suggest there are no post submission checks done, really?? honestly??

The allegations made by the BBC were how long ago now?

and its taken this length of time:

    (a) for whyte to admit he was disqualified

    (b) for the sfa to investigate the disqualification and any subsequent breaches in their Articles

    It all stinks.

Whether he is a suitable person to hold such a position is one issue, another one id suggest is once again the quintessentially british club showing a flagrant disregard for rules and procedures, they still believe they are answerable to no one, but then again it is difficult to break old habits.

Id propose the SFA bring back george peat on secondment and inititiate a deep and meaningful investigation,

now theres a man who knows about procedure.

  22. And Interestingly, but more frightening is this part: the national association (not UEFA), the SFA in this case, will assess whether or not the club has fulfilled the mandatory licensing criteria

There is a very thinly veiled threat to all Scottish clubs, and indeed the National Team, here. Uefa have clearly outlined that any issues with the current license lies with the SFA ergo any irregularities found and it will be the SFA, and by extension all clubs competing under their umbrella, who will bear the brunt of Uefa’s wrath.

“When Rangers submitted their application for this season they were up front about a number of financial issues they were dealing with.

“They were in dispute with the tax man but this was declared and, as it was a legitimate dispute, it was allowed and they still satisfied the criteria.

In one instance, i.e. the ‘big tax case’, this is indeed correct; the ‘small tax case’? No: OrcFC had overdue payables at that point and clearly hid them from the SFA (or worse and I’ll leave the ‘worse’ part up to your own thoughts).

I think the whole thing stinks. It really does.

The board should take a look at this and decide that if it’s proven the SFA have colluded with OrcFC to grant a license on false grounds then the gemme is indeed a bogey and we must use this to force a move. Anything less would surely breach various shareholder laws at the AIM??<-asking whether it does (i.e. if we sit back and take such a shafting, are the board acting in the shareholders best interests) Also, are the SFA acting in their share/stakeholders best interests?

  27. Morning fholks,

There was a part in the DR column that says if club dispute taxbill to authorities then it’s fine but the clue is in this part, the £2.8 was agreed was it not correct me if I’m wrong.

If they agreed to pay this then the SFA and rankers are guilty as charged.
