The players, the manager and the board

503

Celtic controlled the first half at Easter Road without really troubling Hibernian.  That control shattered when Nir Bitton and, more culpably, Scott Brown, combined to concede an unnecessary foul then penalty.  The subsequent lack of urgency to follow Scott Bain’s save and daydreaming at the second Hibs goal was typical Celtic season 2020-21.

You were not surprised at the outcome.  Before the game I wrote a piece on Newco’s accounts (it is important and I will pick it up during the week) but I knew when I was writing it there was a more than decent chance we would have to address this matter instead.

The players have first responsibility to resolve matters, then the manager, then the board.  Doubtless there have been several iterations of attempted fixes, but none have been effective. It is not too late to rescue our season but it will be soon.

  1. Notthebus, I’m in total agreement, I don’t want this to end. The issue we have now is that it very much looks like it may end. This is through lack of investment and a biscuit tin mentality.

The hun have played us off the park on too many occasions as of late and we have not spent in the right way.

I understand we are a selling club, but if you look round the rest of Europe, the teams in the ECL are getting 30/40 mill when they sell on players because of the constant exposure to the ECL. This is were our board has failed us.

You asked who do we get in to save the season. Your question is wrong, as I said I don’t care about one season I care about the next 5/6 and we are moving backwards.

New plan needed and a complete difference approach. Good Young players wont come if they are being told one thing and then the board keep going back on their word. The industry is very incestuous and players talk I don’t believe we will get an French U21 signing for us for a long time now.

    Hail hail

  2. We stopped hammering sevco when they came to the conclusion that we were far far superior and set their team out defensively for a draw at best.

My concern is that our team is full of lightweight players who have plenty of talent but little dig.

Under the current regime I have no faith we could avoid a heavy defeat not just a defeat.

It is with a heavy heart that I call for our manager to do what is best for our club and walk away ASAP.

Rightly or wrongly he has lost the faith of his players big time.

    It is clear and obvious.

I would take ANY recognised manager over Lenny right now just to change the narrative and perhaps bring the players to life.

A couple of positive results in the following weeks are only going to be fools gold and deliver us bang on course for utter humiliation at ibrox in december.

However over at ibrox this week they would certainly be thinking twice about everything if celtic got pro-active this week and installed a brand new manager and coaching staff.

You could give Lenny 30 million to spend in january and i believe it would not make the slightest bit of difference.

Our problems are clearly in the coaching/manager and not to do with the quality we already have.

If celtic sit on this before the next league fixture we are raising the white flag.

  3. Larsson has done absolutely nothing to merit the job,but it is Lawwells only season ticket seller left,as far as I can see.I wouldn’t want him to tarnish his legend either.

  4. In March 2020, Covid almost certainly saved Gerrard from being sacked or him walking. We were running away with the league while they were losing to the bottom teams in the league.

In November 2020, Covid has almost certainly saved Lenny from being sacked for at least the past 5-6 weeks.

He, the players and the board would have been slaughtered by a full Celtic Park for these performances. The anger would have been uncontainable. Instead they have been sheltered in their comfortable bubble and allowed to put in half-hearted performances without having to hear a single boo or whistle.

Conclusion? Covid was clearly concocted by a hun.

  5. What and why do we constantly need to mention ex-Celtic players for the top job, or irish for that matter.

German, Belgium, France Spain, Netherlands all have fantastic youth set-ups and we very rarely tap into these resources.

It’s a big world out there FFS

  6. Henrik Larsson for the job?

exactly from this point do we have to lose..why not.

Come to think of it I would take Ulrik Laursen over Lenny right now.

Not because I hate Lenny, he is a fantastic man and has been a very good manager in the past. But simply because I have a feeling our players have lost every bit of faith in him and will never really play for him again.

Could be a bigger slight on them than Lenny .Perhaps they are a bunch of over-paid ,over-rated journeymen .But ultimately they hold all the power.

  7. We have an emotional, and for some a financial also, interest in Celtic. But we need to remember that Celtic is a club and a company.

The board of Celtic will act in the best interests of the plc, as the board is committed to protecting and promoting the interests of the plc.

And the purpose of a plc is to generate profit in order to maximize shareholder value.

There are lots of ways for a board to act to help the plc to generate profit and not all of them are obvious and as straightforward as you think.

    Maybe that’s what we’re seeing.

  8. DENIABHOY on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 5:14 PM

There is also a scenario that Gerrard would have beaten Lenny again and made the league look a lot closer.

I don’t doubt for a moment that we would have still won it.

What is clear though is that for all our great form in early 2020 as soon as we played an organised -decent team [copenhagen] we got well beaten.

We have continued that pattern this season…without the convincing performances against the poor teams.

  9. Jackiemac

There are still posters on here saying Sevco are rubbish / will implode,

As an organisation we are arrogant, and completely without foresight

    or a coherent plan

  10. JACKIEMAC on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 4:20 PM

I’m screwed if I know what cfc should do

    ————-

Do you know, that is exactly how I feel.

After all NFL has suffered for the Celtic cause I would hate to see him sacked.

On the other hand Hearts sacked a club legend and had hundreds of applications from all over the world.

I am also acutely aware of the precarious financial state of Scottish football which most definitely includes us. The Ferencvaros game was a disaster.

    HH.

  11. Larsson and Mjallby would not work.

Henrik never a Manager,Mjallby was a No 2 and left for whatever reason.

  12. Definitely not Henrik Larsson. Very little on his CV to suggest he can be a success and the problem with hiring a legend of the club is that if/when it becomes clear he’s not up to the job, people will refuse to criticise him and call others “huns” if they do.

We seem to lack tactical nous and decent coaching. Would Henrik Larsson be able to come onto the training ground and convince this bunch of primadonnas of his credentials?

  13. ulysses mcghee - a demographic of one on

I expected movement during the international break – I see it as imperative that the board acts now.

If only to scare the players – because although I truly believe players don’t go out to displease a manager – I can’t shift the feeling that there’s a disconnect throughout the team.

I was told recently that an ex player has said there’s something wrong about the team and the set up and the demeanour of the players.

But anyone trying to point that out was a ‘panty wetter’ or similar.

It’s such a shame the Rogers nexus brought us to here – because part of the rot started then – we were waning and had a poor scouting structure – and we’ve went to trying to plugging holes in the dyke every window since – instead of building a team.

I believe we have a team good enough to win the league. But not the manager to do so…

    U

  14. They’ve won 7 games now in a row and looking strong. Unbeaten all season, in all competitions as we approach December.

A month after Pittodrie, we’re dropping points at Easter road.

They’ve conceded very few goals while we ship them, left, right and centre.

An 11 point gap (5 if we win our games in hand) and a hugely superior goal difference.

Two of the three remaining derbies are at Ibrox.

They’ve beaten us back to back in Paradise.

The writing is clearly on the wall.

If Lennon is still our gaffer at close of business tomorrow, the league is done.

  15. Lawwell will fo for the only guy who will sell season tickets next year,Henrik Larsson….no thanks.

  16. LazyD

Spot on about the lack of muscle and dig in the team!

We have relied on one guy for the past four years and sadly now he is on the decline.

We don’t have anyone else on the books let alone the team who plays remotely like Brown.

Our defence gets pelters at times but often they are made to look a lot worse because of our formation and lack of cover in front of them.

Despite what Latchforsbelly says the huns ain’t years ahead of us. Get a proper modern coach and sign a couple of lower EPL upper Championship standard players and we out them back in their box pronto!

  17. Things are grim no doubt about that . Many flaws sticking out a mile as far as I’m concerned , not giving up on the ten .as long as we more than match them ,but the scouser has them playing . Feel its a bit unfair the criticism on you frimpong , this lad is patroling a full wing from right back to right wing and back again , what is he 19 year old ge should be getting nurtured by our more experienced players , tells the story when he is one of our main men . Many will disagree but gor me we have way too many guys who don’t care enough , ntcham, moi, Bitton, and dare I say it the one with talent in spades rogic can’t be depended on to give there all , one good game in 3 is not enough if we were to keep our noses in front , and again hard to say this ,but our super star is in the same category as the ones mentioned earlier ,has bucket loads at ability and as we’ve all seen recently puts in very little effort. I dont read the papers but on here posters mentioning Christie , sorry to hear he wants a bigger challenge . He tries hard ,as he does for his country . That may be the reason we get hit .while away our guys will hear the riches that await down south . Mcginn , Armstrong, and KT just a few to mention , if its true that we have players ready for the off ,what’s the point in trying to keep them . Lastly I would like to see a new coach with an impressive cv take the post at celtic Park. But I dont know if it would work or not but I would like to see NL be asked to be assistant .this guy is celtic through and through he knows our club inside out , and was abused because of it . We paid the fee for the like of Rodgers. Another smart appointment like that may just save the ten .

  18. lets all do the huddle on

sevco have played 15 league games this season

they have only conceded a goal in 2 of them

thinking they will implode is hope and not evidence based

  19. ULYSSES MCGHEE – A DEMOGRAPHIC OF ONE on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 5:28 PM

I’ve always thought we have a team good enough and our squad will eventually show through.

Now I’m not so sure. Not sure Slippy would swap Roofe for Ajeti, McGregor for Bain, Kent for any of our plodding midfielders, Barisic…

Slippy seems to be using his squad well too – rotating players, getting early goals and taking top players off for the last thirty minutes while we continue to drain every last drop from physically and mentally drained players.

  20. Our next run of games look not too bad … October/November was a hard shift …

If we get to the 20th December, I love the word “if” …winning every league game … a Scottish Cup final in December …

What a great end to the year that could be

I missed what a great end to the year through football that might be, which very many of us have had a shoite 2020

  22. CROPPYBHOY on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 5:33 PM

    100% agree

Our current set of midfielders have been the main problem all season long.

    Not enough work and dig.

Just standing around generally waiting to play a 5 yard pass.

Nobody wants to play quick one-two’s .

    No triangle passing.

No dragging defenders and creating space.

And yes I include CalMac in this.He has been below par all season.

  23. Lazydynamite

Totally agree – in defence of Calmac he has been played almost everywhere except in the goal.

Midfield should be built around him in his best position.

  24. JIMTIM on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 5:35 PM

Sorry pal but Lenny staying on as assistant is a nonsense.

Not only would it insult him it would completely undermime any new coach.

Lenny could be offered a scouting role or stadium match day role if he wanted it.[which I doubt]

But any departed manager needs to be completely removed from his previous squad.

  25. LAZYDYNAMITE on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 5:39 PM

Roofe said in his post-match interview that on the training ground they spend a lot of time working on meaningful possession. He said they know they’ll have a lot of the ball but they work on moving it quickly and penetratively rather than just knocking it side to side.

Could’ve even been a sly swipe at us. I wonder what we work on.

  26. MARKIEBHOY on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 5:44 PM

    I agree

I don’t even know what position he currently plays but it clearly does not bring the best out in him.

And yes…he IS the player you built the team around…..rip it up ,start again and put CalMac on the team sheet and start from there.

  27. Lazydynamite.

I would play him in the number 10 role behind two strikers.

    Oh wait a minute………..

  28. GEEBEE1978 on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 5:45 PM

More evidence on the coaching THEY get and we don’t.

The players aint stupid, they know this.

I believe the whole crux of our problems are probably around our players confusion to the training and tactics.

Our coaches still seem to be having trouble getting players match fit from the summer PRE-SEASON FFS.

Ajeti has never looked match fit and Griffiths apparantly never is match fit.

  29. ulysses mcghee - a demographic of one on

Calmac has been trying to sweep up Brown’s mistakes from lack of pace and poor passing – the Aberdeen penalty was Calmac in a place he just shouldn’t be – it’s a shame he’s being wasted and Brown’s legacy is being tarnished – the former should be played further up the park – the latter should be an impact sub.

  30. Over the last few weeks, one or two (or maybe more) suggested a new interim manager with Scott Brown as a coach or player/coach. A future manager too.

Scott has been a good captain and player but I am not sure he is coaching or managerial material. At least not now. He should have been allowed to go to Australia when he wanted. And he should be allowed to cut his coaching teeth elsewhere.

I’ve never, ever questioned his commitment, but I don’t see a budding tactical genius either. I see a players player. A lovely guy, just like Larsson, but they should not imagine that their outstanding service on the park qualifies them to provide it from off the park.

Think with the head, not with the heart.
