The vandals, the violent and the vile

291

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called what happened in Glasgow on Saturday “violence and vandalism and vile anti-Catholic prejudice”.  No holding back from Newco’s often-reluctant combatant.

On Friday, I suggested those who believe in Scottish or Glaswegian superiority should reappraise themselves on the streets on the city the following day.  Our society’s underbelly was as clear as it was predictable.  I could argue it is uglier than most places I know.

With George Square filled exclusively with illegally-assembled Newco fans, the combatants turned on each other; reliving the violence earlier generations of Oldco fans brought to cities across Britain and beyond.  There is no peer-control, no one cares enough about this particular reputation, certainly not the club that asked, “If possible, please celebrate within your own community.”  When “If possible” statements are permitted, you know what you are dealing with.

Some of us are mere football fans, not trying to compensate for a whole range of inadequacies.  If possible, let them wait another decade before they have another trophy to celebrate.

Hi Ghuys, Salve salve ;- Remember when a few Celtic supporters arranged to meet and walk to the ground ?

Do you remember the how Poleas Alba reacted ? This to an entirely peaceful walk. I do not think anyone can reasonably deny that the Scottish Assembly leadership has treated Celtic far differently with regards to covid than they have “The Rangers”.

Poleas Alba have not encouraged or enabled the rabble to react as they did, no they actually empowered them and this is dangerous in the extreme.

Embdy manage to verify the soundtrack was ‘true’ and identities of the dignified, anti-racists caught on mic? I listened twice but couldnt make anything obvious out.

Sadly, from afar, it seems they can infringe with impunity. Utter middle finger – eff the lottaye – impunity.

Dom has to take the lead from the FM, and now call this out – as a governance issue – every time anti-Catholic, anti-Irish pish is repeated. FM Nicola was first to say it – solid opportunity to build on that and ensure they’re globally shamed for their fascist tendencies every time it happens from this moment on…

say they are aware of a video circulating on social media apparently showing some Rangers players and staff using anti catholic language after their weekend title win. BBC Scotland understands the club believes the footage has been doctored.

In a society where women are visited by police for chalking slogans & threatened with arrest for tweets why is anti-Irish racism & anti-Catholic bigotry allowed to run rife on our streets? I’ll be taking this up on behalf of my constituents & my community.

You omit all the evidence and pointers that suggest it would be worse under independence.

HMRC — AS wanted them to tread lightly in the Big Tax Case and then accept some sort of CVA.

If we had been independent AS would have instructed them if he had to.

It was because the decisions were made down south that they were liquidated.

Their leverage would be stronger in an independent Scotland.

Too many of those in power either actively support them or are happy to cut them some slack.

If there is no oversight from outside then they will be emboldened to act in an even more partisan fashion.

Big ask to think that the attitude that went after the various TFOD2 financiers / directors would behave more responsibly in an independent Scotland — very big indeed.

All the evidence points to things getting worse.

As in the tax guys are called off or the financiers go to jail.

Thin veneer of civility / functioning democracy at the moment.

The local media are a joke.

Whilst I agree with you that it has nothing to do with us we need to be ready for when we inevitably get brought into the debate. If Lawwell and Co would show more balls speaking out against Newco than they do persecuting our own fans that would help for a start. Our club shop was vandalized on Saturday, toilets regularly wrecked when those animals visit Celtic Park, yet nothing is done. As a starter for ten to see if Lawwell and Co have the balls, why don’t they release a statement cutting all ties with Parks of Hamilton saying they don’t want to be associated with such individuals who are aligned with a sectarian, bigoted football club and its followers. (That after match party confirmed that). Perhaps Paul you may pick it up in the forthcoming love in article that you will no doubt produce on Lawwell when he thankfully departs..

  9. Wonder if the cup game where “Fenian $@%&” was clearly heard by everyone was doctored too……

  10. Whatever advice RFC, the SFA & the Scottish Government were giving to fans of Newco over the preferred method of celebrating was always going to be ignored anyway.

But after the farce in Pollokshields on Thursday, the message they received very clearly was the one that they were already very familiar with.

If you have a critical mass of people you can pretty do what you want & ignore the cops & the law.

They did precisely that with the unsurprising result.

Police Scotland’s inadequacies were exposed, shrugging & saying there’s too many of them to take any effective action so we just let them get on with it. Instead of dealing with them at Ibrox (where they knew they’d be gathering in large numbers), they let them urinate their way along Paisley Road West & turn George Square into a drunkards slum before deciding to act.

Those politicians who chose to ignore a law on Thursday but who then strenuously advised others to abide by that same law on Saturday are complicit in the mess that civil order & policing have become in Scotland.

As fans, we have always asked for little more that a level playing field for our team.

As citizens, a level playing field in the application of the law is fundamental to any civil society.

I’d also be interested to know if there’ll be the same level of post incident arrests following the Kenmure St debacle as we’re told will be applied to the George Square fandance.

  12. IMO, if Celtic made any comment re The Huns behaviour, the MSSM would be falling over themselves to make theis an `Old Firm` affair. Celtic should keep quiet on this one ( an area where they have shown themselves to be expert).

I hear what you say about scrutiny of past Hunnery being taken out of the hands of the prevailing Scoddish Establishment.

However my point was and remains that being part of the UK only reinforces and emboldens these vermin and certainly does nothing to curb their antisocial behaviour.

I am not confident that any Holyrood politicians have the stomach to take them on, but they at least are starting to acknowledge it’s their job to offer some kind of token disapproval.

Johnson as the self-ordained Minister Of The Union will say nothing about this carnage on what remain UK city streets.

People in England and Wales simply cannot comprehend the huns mindset or behaviour.

    Its totally alien to them.

  26. Scenario….

Gerrard is Manager of Liverpool FC and they are due to play the Huns in a European Tie at Anfield.

Thousands of Hun fans cause chaos on their way down south, they TRASH Liverpool city centre BEFORE, DURING AND after the Match, assaulting police and innocent bystanders and shoplift, and loot from Liverpool Shops.

All in all…its just like another Manchester ” Fun trip 2008″ for these ANIMALS….I wonder what Mr Gerrard would say about that possible forthcoming attraction ?

For what it’s worth I would agree that Celtic should keep schtum about the weekend Hunnery, since on the face of it we don’t have a dog in this fight.

However it has to be said that there would not have been any weekend Hunnery had Celtic acted in 2012 with the best interests of the Football Department.

Saturday is the price Glasgow and Scotland pays for Celtic PLC’s chosen business model.

  28. The Huns behaviour is predictable. It would happen whether they believe they are a newco or the old Rangers. This is how the Huns behave whether its 1 or 55.

Celtic should keep out of it. It is not our business. We are half of nothing and we should reinforce this message.

We should however private question Police Scotland on the double standards applied in Policing.

We should be looking at the pathetic performance of a Celtic team in the 0 0 draw with Hibs on saturday. They should ensure such a performance never happens again. You see more enthusiasm in the Public park.

I watched some of the EPL games and some of the scottish games and the contrast between our jogging walking football against Hibs and the running around full pelt in the other games were obvious. I know there was little at stake but what we showed is unacceptable
