We hired a builder

When looking for a new manager, Celtic usually try to fix the biggest shortcoming the previous guy had.  In May 2019, Neil Lennon’s biggest asset was his “eye for a player”.  There were other attributes. he twice got Celtic into the Champions League group stage where he delivered some of the most memorable nights in our European history, but Celtic’s decline started with his predecessor’s inability to sign quality players after the arrival of Scott Sinclair.

When it fall apart last season, Neil seemed unable to imagine how to organise a squad that was performing significantly below the sum of its individual parts.  Apparently simple tasks, like how to organise at defensive set pieces.  The answer to that particular question was Eddie Howe.

Howe took a team of lowly £17m misfits and marshalled them into a very solid unit.  He also had other attributes, but that ability to defend a corner kick was very convincing.

I spoke to Peter Lawwell soon after Brendan Rodgers left and again after Neil Lennon’s departure.  Neither Neil nor Eddie fitted the bill he was initially looking at.  On this occasion, Ange Postecoglou fits perfectly.  Technically proficient, capable of withstanding the intensity of our game, with an ability to make us a far better team three years out than we were when he took over.

It’s that last attribute we recruited yesterday.  Neil and Brendan both left teams that were poorer than two years previous.  We hired a builder.

See that Jolly Boy John aka JHB is still polluting this once great site. These Unionist infiltrators like Ernie Lynch and his Mr Hyde have achieved their Unionist goal. Kill CQN with boredom.

  5. BBC/ITV…

I was REPULSED last night while watching Denmark v Finland as while the stricken was receiving CPR on the Pitch, the BBC ” commentators” couldnt wait to inform us that the Ref was ” English” on numerous occasions. this was repeated on BOTH BBC and ITV Football shows last night….and AGAIN this morning on BBC breakfast News.

What feckin DIFFERENCE did the ” Nationality” of the Ref make ?

I would think that ANY Ref from ANY country would have realised very quickly that Christian Eriksons condition was very serious ?

Those English Commentators and Pundits/News Teams just cant help themselves.

    Shocking !

  6. I was saying some Prayers for Christian Erickson last night as he was being treated. Like some others on here, I thought the BBC continuing their ” Camera Work” as Christen was being treated by Medical Staff on the Pitch was quite frankly…A DISGRACE.

They SHOULD have stopped showing any pictures from the pitch a lot SOONER than they did…IMHO. The players and their backroom staff and FANS of BOTH Nations were also clearly Distressed by what they were witnessing, but the BBC continued to have Cameras doing ” Close Ups” of Danish fans in particular.

I ended up changing TV Channels.

  7. On a slightly cheerier note…I had TWO Correct scores Correct yesterday with Belgium winning 3-0 @ 14/1, and Wales drawing 1-1 @ 11/2.

Two ” singles” and a ” Double on both correct scores…and I am now waiting for HOLLAND v Ukraine to complete the Bet Tonight, although I already have a nice wee return for my stake Money… but..

    MON the Dutch !

    2-0 Correct Score @ 13/2 ?

  9. As one Danish newspaper put it: “Denmark lost. But life won.”

“They are friends and they responded to Christian Eriksen in his moment of need. Because of the substance of the men involved, they consoled Christian’s partner, who was distraught pitchside. We build players up and put them on a pedestal but they are humans like the rest of us.”

At my old cut and paste again, but I was very taken by this article about the incident last night.

I think we tend to forget the obvious at times. Some of the abuse that is aimed at Celtic players and staff is disgraceful. The clickbait sites lead a lot of it and some ‘supporters’ join in. Yes, last year was a complete disaster and could have been so different. Then again life continues and Big Ange is on his way.

IF the Ref had been Scottish, and the Pundits ALSO Scottish…I would STILL be Posting the same thing…What DIFFERENCE did it make what Nationality the Ref was/is…..as Christen was lying stricken on the turf ?

FIFA should ” Award” Christian Erickson as ” Player of the Tournament” TODAY….Likewise BOTH Demark and Finland as ” ” BEST Nations of the Tournament”….Today…right now….?

I wonder will ’66 get a mention today, from the engerlund media.

    ###

I’m not sure that England fans mention 1966 any more frequently than Celtic fans mention 1967.

  17. BHOYJOEBELFAST on 13TH JUNE 2021 9:18 AM

Though the English media mention 1966 than the Scottish media mention 1967.

On balance I think the Scottish media come out of that worse than the English media.

  18. You could play cliche bingo with most of the english pundits and commentators these days. Jermaine Jenas is the worst, if you denied him access to the cliche checklist he’d have zero to say. The funniest interlude in the game (I think it was Italy v Turkey) was when the camera showed a sleeping child, “He’s been listening to you” the main commentator said to Jermaine. Ouch.

It’s a strange fallacy that cliches belonged to the older generation of pundits, where actually the younger and modern generation are far more likely to lean heavily on them, perhaps because they don’t have the level of experience in observing the game. Hansen and Lawrenson for me were far more knowledgeable and insightful, and had the confidence to provide less popular or jingoistic views.

  19. Bhoyjoebelfast on

Maybe Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are two reasons why Scots media would like to forget 1967.

  20. Which reminds me……

I liked John Motson, he always seemed a harmless old fella who was enthusiastic about his trade. So it’s with some regret that I recount this tale.

I recall watching England v someone, in the last qualifying game for a major tournament. England were losing and it was now apparent they wouldn’t qualify. Motty was lost for words, clearly struggling as his passion for his team overcame his normally professional approach to his job. He turned to Mark Lawrenson and pleaded “Say something, Mark”.

Lawrenson, in his flat Lancashire tone, probably confused as a former Rep ireland player, simply said “I can’t”.

God forgive me, I had a little laugh at that.

  21. I see there is a spat on social media and Big Jimmy has also stated his position on the TV coverage of Eriksen stricken and receiving treatment.

My take is that I wanted to see it. From a long distance camera. It showed that the immediate and correct first aid treatment can work miracles. If it encourages people to learn CPR and that in turn save just one life, then so much the better.

If you didn’t want to see it, turn it off – as Big Jimmy did.

The fans in the stadium, the players and officials all had the same choice. Some watched , some shielded there eyes, some players turned their back whilst forming a barrier to prevent overtly prying eyes / cameras.

    Everyone is different.

Difference is we won fair n square .The ball was clearly over the line for our 2 goals and there were no fans on the pitch until the final whistle blew.

Ernie – fair point about the media conduct.

English football’s greatest achievement took place on 30 July 1966.

    Everyone involved was English.

And they never stop talking about it.

Scottish football’s greatest achievement (by some distance) took place on 25 May 1967.

    Everyone involved was Scottish.

    And is rarely mentioned.
