Weekend at Bernie’s, response to the refugees, Ralph Milne

475

Well done to the thousands who turned up for the Jock Stein 30th Anniversary game at Dunfermline yesterday. Money from the match is already helping refugees through the British Red Cross’s Europe Refugee Crisis Appeal.

The club site this morning reported David Miller of the Red Cross said, “Celtic FC Foundation and their fans’ support will make a real difference to the refugees and communities affected across Europe and in neighbouring countries. Thank you for supporting the appeal.”

We have a great auction coming up this week for hospitality at the Dundee game later this month, all funds going to the Foundation.  Look out for it.

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Ralph Milne yesterday. Ralph was one of the outstanding talents of Scottish football when he won the league with Dundee United in 1983, a day after his 22nd birthday.

His scored the goal which won the league, but the memory of his chance in the European Cup semi-final, a year later away to Roma, still induces regret. 27 years later Roma would admit to bribing the referee for that game, as they progressed to the final with a 3-2 aggregate.  A few years after winning the league the writing was on the wall for Ralph’s career.

I watched him playing a student team on a public park, telling the incredulous English person I was with about Ralph’s European Cup semi-final exploits three years earlier.  He then floated around the English lower leagues before Sir Alex Ferguson signed him for Manchester United.  Fergie remember the Ralph we were all amazed at from the 82-85 era, but by then (1988) Ralph was a a shadow of his former self.  One of the game’s greats became one of its parodies.

Weekend at Bernie’s

Kick back and give yourself 20 minutes to have a read at Weekend at Bernie’s, recently published by the Hostile Monkey blog. In the light of last week’s court appearances it is a fully referenced, line-by-line, assessment of the “same club myth”, detailing six areas instances of the debate:

The Lord Nimmo-Smith Commission Argument
The European Football Club Association Argument
The UEFA website argument
The Advertising Standards Authority argument
The BBC Trust Argument
The SFA Registration Argument

It’s worth bookmarking for future reference.

  1. I heard he was dead on

And how many points will Ireland get?

Scotland need ONE point vs Poland and they have the playoff

Ireland will finish on 15 points.

  2. Ireland won’t beat either Germany or Poland. They might get a point at home to Germany but that would be the most of it. I agree with I heard he was Dead, if Scotland beat Poland they will get into the play offs.

    Both of us are realists.

Neither of our teams are very good but Scotland have the advantage given they have played their worst games.

At least a point at home does ti for the Scots.

Whether they win the play-off is another matter but Ireland beat the teams they were expected to.

Despite the god show tonight the Germans were always likely to win that game tonight. It will prove the same in Dublin.

    And call me Snake

  5. It’s fair to say that Scotland have improved slightly from the Scotland teams of 2000 to 2013 or so.

However, until we develop the mentality to deal with away games against tricky teams, we will not succeed as a footballing nation. We are too happy to just turn up when big teams are on the pitch and not make the same effort against the other hungry nations.

A fraction of the effort shown tonight would have earned a goal or goals in Georgia.

I’m sorry but the current squad of players is just as bad as those who played from 2000 to 2013. For a while Strachan had them playing at a level which was greater than the sum of the parts. However, this could not be sustained and it has now all fallen apart. I remember watching the recent match against Ireland and thinking that both teams were really bad and neither deserved a place at the Euros next year. Obviously, one of them will make the play-offs but for the sake of the tournament, I won’t shed a tear if neither of them make any further progress.

I didn’t say they were yet a good team.

But I stand by the view that they were better than what Bertie Vogts had to work with.

Barry Ferguson was the best player in that generation of players. Craig Brown had 6 midfielders better than Barry and WGS has a supporting cast that is better than the Scot Dobies and Kevin Kyles who were capped then

A big thank you to GS for taking aff SB and JF as he knows we have a big game this weekend

Are you suggesting that the Scots, specifically or perhaps generally, are deluded?

    But you are not!

  11. Amy scot who thinks they will do it r deluded. And I’m Scottish. They don’t have the ability. It’s obvious.

The comparison between Bertie Vogts players and the current squad is largely irrelevant. The rest of the world has moved on in footballing terms whereas Scotland has more or less stood still which in effect means they are going backwards if that makes any sense at all.

  13. Murray down 1 set, kip time, hopefully I’ll wake up to see Andy has won, btw, like the green trainers he’s wearing, huns don’t wear green :))

  14. What is the Stars on

Ireland and Scotland are no world beaters but Poland are being over estimated on here

Ireland should have beaten them in Dublin and are more than capable of getting a point in Poland.

    My prediction

Ireland will beat Germany ( mcgeady 8th min) 1 0

Scotland will beat Poland 2.0 ( mulgrew and maloney)

Ireland will win in Poland and qualify as group winners, Germany will be 2nd and thanks to us beating Poland, Scotland will make third place playoff. Payback for Gary Mackay, .Thanks

“The comparison between Bertie Vogts players and the current squad is largely irrelevant. The rest of the world has moved on in footballing terms whereas Scotland has more or less stood still which in effect means they are going backwards if that makes any sense at all.”

It’s relevant if you are comparing them in absolute terms as I was. I think this squad is better than Vogts had at his disposal and better thna the group when James McFadden was the star. Yes, lots of teams have made great strides but, even in relative terms.

FIFA rankings may be unreliable but we were as low as 88th in the world in 2005, the year after Bertie left. And though we have been as high as 13th when we had a couple of big wins against big teams in the next couple of years, we have been a yo-yo team between 20th and 50th. We are stabilising around the 25 to 35 mark now, a slight improvement.

If we get to the play-offs, it will be a definite improvement.

Think it’s time to draw an end to this conversation, based as it was on a misunderstanding that I was attacking Australians.

Whether I am boring or not, this dialogue of the deaf certainly is.

    Naah,mate.

After that kip,I`m raring` to go again.

    Perhaps even some common ground.:-)

    What is the Stars

    Mate, that is wishful thinking.

The Germans no matter how rubbish they play always get the job done.

Ireland got a last minute draw vs Poland. They ain’t getting Jack in Warsaw.

It’s all down to Scotland in Glasgow

I meant to say mcgeady 89th minute, not 8th minute and I now realise we will probably come second and Germany will win the group

  19. What is the Stars on

    I heard he was dead.

Tine will tell but I think we should get at least 4 points from the next 2 games but probably six

Sorry mate but that is fantasy nonsense.

15 points will be Ireland’s lot.

They’ve had their maximum this group. They have got everything they can manage. Germany and Poland will pump them

  22. What is the Stars on

    I heard he was dead

    You are talking bullshit pal

    No one is pumping us.

We owe Angela Merkel gang and we will do them. Poland are not great, we will win in warsaw. Talk to me next month

  23. I heard he was dead on

    What is the stars

We will see but I stand by my prediction.

Ireland’s lot will be 15 points.

Scotland will get their draw vs Poland and obvious 3 points vs Gibraltar and therefore 3rd on the head to head.

It’s obvious and more to the point Ireland don’t deserve it on this campaign
