Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

  1. The huns question Collum’s impartiality, inferring he is a cheat/ Celtic fan,and his religion, the complaint is supported by the SMSM.

Celtic ask Beaton to explain decisions, his fone number leaked by Jabba, police protection nonsense,’Celtic force referees summit ‘ SMSM in full blame Celtic mode.Compare and contrast. If any Celtic fan buys a newspaper in this country, you are feeding our enemies.

  2. Listen guys, I have been a bit negative this window, and I would like to apologise if my posts are bringing a negative tone to the blog. I am just frustrated as I know most of you are as well, after the last 2 windows our club does not fill me with any confidence in the market.

But as a lot of you have pointed out, BR has done magnificently since he came in.

I never wish any Celtic player or player coming into us anything but support and encouragement.

So down with my negativity and onwards and upwards to title number 8.????????

    Good afternoon Andy.

Thank you very much for your kind words. Everything you said about me applies to you as well my friend.

Yes, I am more guarded in anything I share now. And yes Weah and Bayo are well out there. I did post last night that both the Weah and Bayo deals were over the line, although not yet officially announced. I stand by those assertions.

You keep doing what you and I do best, being both a fan and a supporter my friend…

    Until we meet again…

    Keep the Faith!

Celtic have won seven Titles in a row and, have won the last seven Competitions they have entered in Scotland. Why, therefore, are there so many negative posts and what would we have won with perceived to be good transfer windows?

    Cheerio for now,

PS I do, though, agree with the negativity re Beaton and The Establishment in Scotland.

It is a constant source of frustration for me ,that many football supporters will consider anything negative being said about their club ,as being credible.

The converse being that they will dismiss anything positive being said about their rival as nonsense.

    E.G. Defoe signing for Sevco.

If we had signed him ,many of the same people who say he will flop at Sevco ,would have heralded him as a great signing for Celtic.

My other great frustration is god like status being put upon our football managers .

Football managers are just normal human beings like the rest of us.

I have often rightly questioned their so called much higher level of knowledge.

Chief Scouts fall into the same mould.

In WGS we trust. In Lenny we trust,In Ronnie we trust ,In Brendan we trust. In Park we trust .In Congerton we Trust.

    Blind faith I don’t do.

So for 5hose of you that think Brendan and Congerton ,like all our recent managers ,have a magical eye and all is going to plan.

    Think on .

    Bangura,Amido Balde,Mark Antoine Fortune,Myokolo,Flood ,Comper,Hendry,Hayes,etc,etc,etc.

For every Wanyama there are several Eboues.

    Nothing is written in stone.

We are in a dog fight and the judgement and succession planning of our manager and chief scout has proven to be mediocre at best so far.

If you don’t have concerns ,I understand that it is your mindset ,not to harbour them.

Not harbouring the thought of it ,doesn’t mean that failure can happen.

I see no evidence of an organised ,effective plan for recruitment, for this season.

Fail to plan ,plan to fail.

  8. See John James ( I know ) calling out SFA new comms man Greg Mailer for leaking info to journo and set the ball rolling to change the narrative on Beaton. Before SFA he was at Hibs so Petrie placing his foot soldiers before he takes over from that clown MCRae.

I would expect Mr Mailer to keep his powder dry and not respond ; although silence can be incriminating for a comms person.

On more important matters Burke, Weah, Bayo are all projects and none immediately strengthen the team. We need a striker, right back and centre half who are automatic first team picks. Anything less is capitulation from the club who have paid out more in CEO bonus than transfer fees in the transfer window to date.

  9. Rumour is that Tony “Big Noggin” Robbins is being lined up for ” Head ” of Scouting……..

    Yup!

  10. I fully appreciate any Celtic Supporter being unhappy about our Transfer ( or lack of ?) dealings for some time now, including this “Window” which is only 5 Days old to be fair.

That said, MAYBE we are guilty of looking at any Celtic AND Sevco Transfer Dealings in this “Window” ( So Far) in the wrong way ?

This is just a suggestion….the Huns are desperate to stop 8 in a row, and MAYBE this is their last throw of the Dice, as it MAY be the case that should they NOT win the SPL this Season, what they are doing right now in this Transfer Window, is literally putting ALL their Eggs in one Basket, and shelling out Wages that they know they can NOT Afford in that desperate attempt to stop Celtic from reaching 8iar. Should Celtic win 8iar…The Huns are truly Fecked..more than ever…and will be in no position to stop Nine in a Row etc, due to THEMS once again spending Cash that they do not have ?

Meantime, Celtic may feel ( Rightly or wrongly ?) that all we have to do is ENSURE that we have the Playing staff to overcome any sort of challenge for THIS Season from The Huns ( or anyone else), and Nine and Ten ( and beyond) in a Row will simply fall into place as The Huns will be in further turmoil by the end of this Season, and unable to mount any challenge for Seasons ahead ?

Hence why, Celtic MAY feel that we do NOT have to spend Millions on new Players in this particular season ( whats left of it) to achieve 8iar, as IF we win the SPL this Season it could prove to be the FINAL Nail in Sevcos Coffin ? Sevco players leaving..not replaced..slippy Stevie SACKED etc.

I could be wrong of course, as the thought of Celtic going for One in a Row, and The Hun going for 2 in a Row next Season doesnt bear thinking about !

All the above is just a thought of course.

  11. My friends in Celtic,

    The Bayo signing excites me.

However without a right to buy, I cannot really get excited by developing players signing on a 6 month only loan deal.

Imo a 6 month only loan deal requires establised players who have the ability to walk straight into our team and perform immediately.

Celtic need it’s supporters more than ever now, as we are in a state of war with the game’s authorities.

Any other issues, real or imagined, should be shelved meantime, until this matter is resolved.

  13. I asked this “Speculative” question the other Day……I do wonder if at the time of Morelos assaulting Celtic Players..IF ANY Celtic Player asked him “Why is that NOT a Red or a Yellow Card Ref” ?

And IF, Beaton responded to any such question saying ” Sorry Broonie or Cal etc…but I DIDN’T see it” ?

If so, I want ANY Celtic Player to Speak up, and show that Beaton has also LIED in his match Report etc ?

I find it hard to believe that NOT one Celtic Player asked him that question when Morelos was a Wrecking Mission for 90 Minutes ?

  14. The hands can’t hit……

I share your mindset with regards to our lack of investment.

My point is that is not how the bean counters see it.

I posted on here when we still had Dembele.

That we needed another striker as all of our strikers suffered from injury problems.

The fact Dembele went at the end of the window was irrelevant.

We have failed to invest .

We swait to see what level of European football we will play at before spending.

We should have invested before we played AEK .

WE WOULD MORE THAN LIKELY HAVE have qualified for the CL .

If we failed we could then have put the likes of Dembele on the open market.

Our actions in the transfer market show a real lack of either the ability to buy what would improve us or the ambition.

  17. TINYTIM @ 11:49 AM,

….The real reason we are not spending big is we can’t afford to.

We need CL income otherwise we will make a huge loss.

    We didn’t get it .

Therefore the money from player sales is needed to offset losses.

Celtic PLC run the accounts to break even or make a small profit without European income.

So in any given year if we have no European Football and we don’t make a profit from player sales we break even.

It has been stated by the Board in the past, that all the profits from European Football and all the gains from player sales shall be reinvested in the Football Club.

Clearly that has been a falsehood and I don’t think the PLC claim this anymore.

The fact remains, the PLC budget to be ahead of their nearest rival in Scotland and that’s, that. All other monies are stored for the day Celtic can play in a bigger league.

Lenny, Ronny and now Brendan have not been backed and we have made profits on player sales through each of these Managers tenures.

Also the vast profit that our European exploits bring in, especially during Lenny’s and Brendan’s tenure are squirrelled away… though some of it is used for capital projects.

As well as that, a part of the money spent on recruitment goes on the Boards pet projects, like our relationship with Man City and the moneyball gambling on players.

That has meant at any one point in time, 40-50% of our squad is not at the required level to add to the first team. They are simply a drain on wages and little use to the Manager as they play little and use up resource from coaching and medical staff. We often get little or nothing when these players leave.

This leaves a small percentage of our turnover for the Manager to pursue his “vision” of team building I.e. quality not quantity.

In reality that is why we are not “spending big”.

It culminated in the disastrous summer window of 2018. Two plusses, the Manager got a first rate striker and the Board rescued their moneyball project by selling Dembele at the final knockings otherwise a tragic waste.

Of course every cloud has a silver lining and this was supposed to lead to a high level summit as regards our recruitment… DD, BR and PL.

However I personally believe the loggerheads continued after that summit and nothing substantial was agreed.

We’ve heard nothing from Brendan regarding his ambitions for Celtic since the and we have approached this window with the same flawed methodology that we approached the last 14… We’ll have to wait our silver lining…

I have no great expectations for this transfer window despite the mountain of money we are sitting on and our European riches.

We will spend enough to win this year’s title, hope we get that right, as so much could go wrong and any other money we spend will be a bonus…

It would be recuped in the summer , by the sale of Edouard or Ntcham ,but most likely Tierney.

Until recently I thought that Broony would be here for the 10.

But if we lose the league then that historic achievement for both player and club will have gone.

What popped into my head this morning was that we don’t sign Steve Davis / Defoe ages players very often .

kolo Toure being the most recent exception.

Looking from the outside in .

If Broony were playing for another club and was available .We most likely wouldn’t sign him.

  28. On the Beaton farce. Some saying the elbow on Ryan was the worst offence.Maybe so.The one that got me was the grabbing of Ryans privates.

A couple of months ago,a Hearts player recieved the two game ban,for doing the same thing to Ryan at Murrayfield. At the time there was a fair bit of press, media discussion about this offence. It came to light, this was seen by the authorities as such a serious offence,it was deemed “An act of brutality”in the rule book, and was a straight red card offence.

Now,for Beaton to say he saw this and took no action whatsoever, should be the offence that damns him.I cannot fathom why this was not more highlighted in our club statement, rather than an injury to Ralston.

Seems PSG think a lot more highly of Weah than many on here.Could be a longer loan deal may be on the cards.

Its because some poor individuals are never happier than when they are whingeing , nagging , moaning and complaining.

If that`s not sad enough , they want to convert you to said mentality.

You are both absolutely correct about winning all seven domestic trophies.

But that is only a part of our football landscape.

The European adventure increased players values as it proved some of them could perform against better players and the income we received for being in the champions league far surpassed the domestic prize money.

So if we continually to selectively view only domestic football then everything is brilliant.

We had money in the bank but refused to spend and by selling added to the pile which resulted in us being put out of champions league by an average side at best.

The only plus side was they took the European humping in the group stages we would have received to add to previous seasons performances.

Perhaps this adds to the discontentment along with our boards performance on Res12 and the silence on the litany of cheating in Scottish football.

Spending some of that profit may not have produced anything better in Europe but it could be argued that addressing the clear weaknesses in the squad may have increased our ability to compete.

  33. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ CELTIC40ME on 6TH JANUARY 2019 1:41 PM

Only issue with that analysis (re players sales making up for shortfall) is that we have circa £40m in the bank, so there should be no requirement to sell players. What is the point of having this money in the bank if: i.) we never use it to invest in the squad; and 2.) we don’t use it for a rainy day; instead preferring to sell assets and thereby further weakening the team and increasing the likelihood of a further rainy day.

It’s a flawed business model. Such are our profits that we are now paying tax, as opposed to investing in players.

  34. Compper, Hendry, Hayes, Gamboa, DDV, there’s £5M investment gone in front of your eyes, sell Moussa Dembele and the Club comes out £15,000,000 up. The investment is there, its just that some chose not to see it, and prefer fag packet economics and ripping into the board because there’s ‘only’ a £2M striker on his way to Dubai, and not a £5M superstar. The bigger picture of course is the Celtic wage structure which remains healthy and intact, and able to pay out much more than any other Scottish club, we’re on terms with Manchester City, PSG, and more, the world’s biggest talent stockers.

Why don’t Aberdeen or even Sevco get contracted players on loan from big clubs?, the answer is they can’t afford the wages and the players wouldn’t come to Scotland other than to Celtic.

Mid season, mid battle predicated with Dave King’s ‘fold like a pack of cards’ without the champions league, BR’s winning formula continues to be unpicked especially away from home, and more so in Europe, but we won’t know the extent of the summer of 2018 impasse, until we’ve overcome all the obstacles placed and to still to come in front of winning the eight title.

Gordon, Rogic, MacGregor, Tierney, Edouard, Ntcham, Forrest, will be the nucleus of team 2 come the summer, others will come and go through the revolving door.
