Celtic 5-0 St Mirren

1271

Celtic swept St Mirren aside this afternoon as a hat-trick from Gary Hooper and goals from Georgios Samaras and Dylan McGeough

Celtic came roaring out of the traps and blew St Mirren away this afternoon.  Georgios Samaras got the show underway on 4 minutes when he collected the ball after Marc McAusland failed to make a clean connection on the ball.  Samaras still had a lot to do and carried the ball into the box.  With defenders closing in from all around the Greek striker placed his shot instead of going for power.  St Mirren keeper, Craig Samson got a hand to the shot but the ball spun slowly towards goal and settled 8” over the line.

Four minutes later, a clearly confident Samaras drove into the St Mirren penalty box before cutting the ball left for Anthony Stokes, who’s fired cross was turned over the line from 3 yards by Gary Hooper.

Samaras was running the show but was hampered by a knock to the ankle which he took a few moments to recover from.  This coincided with St Mirren’s best period of play as the visitors gained more possession and territorial advantage in the period before half time.

Celtic started the second half just as brightly as they did the first as Hooper and Kayal could both have added to the score, however, the third would arrive 8 minutes into the second half.  Victor Wanyama played an excellent forward pass to Stokes who hit the goal line before cutting back for Gary Hooper.  Hooper collected with his back to goal but spun and shot in a sweeping move that left Samson with no chance.

Hooper completed his hat-trick on 57 minutes when he tried to play a one-two with Stokes but the ball was returned by a defender, allowing him to chip the on-rushing Samson.

18-year-old Dylan McGeough made his first impact as a Celtic player minutes after replacing James Forrest when he collected the ball 10 yards in front of his own box, ran 70 yards into the St Mirren box, before creating space and despatching Celtic’s fifth goal.  An unforgettable moment for the young player.

  1. A very good performance today

Victor has the potential to be a regular for the next 10 years – unfortunately dont think we will have him that long

Good to see the young lad DMcG get some game time – he has a bit of the gallusness required to be a top player

Matthews and Ledley had excellent games – though I would much rather see Joe back in the mddle of the park

Heard on the radio that the huns have not lost at Killie in 17 years – so not expecting anything tomorrow – we just need to keep winning!

Good to see the GB know their history by usng my moniker – as AJ would say!

Or does that make me a hun?

Aye, no half. The Club will be getting it during the week as well with the next round of attacks. It’s a guarantee. It’s relentless this season. Maybe I’m mad, but it seems to me the establishment see us as socialist subversives, and that’s why they are keen to encourage these attacks. Demonstrators and “subversives” are being actively quelled just now before the coming storm of recession and demsonstration. I shouldn’t comment though, no politics in football and all that :)

If you bought a programme today then go to page 32 and read Murdo’s account of a game dated 21/05/79

I can still see that 4th goal behind the goal to make it Celtic 4 Rangers 2……………………………………. :)

  5. Just back from the game and about to go out so a quick player assessment.

Matthews,Ledley and Wanyama were all top drawer.

Stokes,Hooper,Kayal and Loovens, were all very good

Majstorovic,Forrest and Forster were all good. Sammi was brilliant for 15 minutes then seemed a little confused as to where he should be! Sammi is Sammi.

Incidentally, I thought we were even better on Wednesday than to day but on both occasions, we played some exhilerating football. Not quite Barcelona but getting close to Arsenal at times.

Nine points and an improvement of eight goals in difference in a week is certainly a great improvement

I was round at the brothers today – naw, no the pub to any residents of Rue de La Possil – and got talkin to my 17 year old nephew. 17 and 6’2 with size 12 feet.

Lovely young fella. We got round to the fact that I couldn’t stay the night bevvyin with him and his dad as my good wife was goin out, and I had to babysit my 4 year-old nephew.

He informs me I’ve broken the “bro-code” – has anybody heard of such a codex? It seemed to impugn, judging from his demeanour, a lack of manliness?

I could see any respect he had for me fading before my eyes. There was only one, desperate, option left.

I kneed him in the nads.

My brother understood – he said he’d have done exactly the same thing. I love im… sob

PS Well played today Celtic, very similar performance to Wed night, we managed to finish better – we’re starting to click – long way to go though.

  11. Lovely story about the wee bhoy going to his first game. I had a wee reminder at half time of my own early days getting into Celtic Park. A chap who must give me at least 10 years (so, he is definitely getting on) saw me entering the area where you get the teas and that.He hadn’t moved from there. He reckoned I was every bit as mad now as I was in the distant pasy, asking to be lifted over even at the reserve games. Couldn’t argue with that. You’d have to have been a wee bit mad to brave that wind and rain today.

  19. Other than my two post already, don’t want to say too much more about the performance today as so many posters have already expressed my views. However, in the tradition of Ant and Dec, my highlights on a dreech day and in no particular order:

Samaras, McGeouch, Wanyama and the Green Brigade…I salute you, the rest of the Players and those fortunate to be able to be inside Celtic Park today and thanks for bringing pride to the thousands of Bhoys and Ghirls throughout the Globe…

  20. not even thinking about tomorrow and what the points could be – in my head its 7 points – i can see killie rolling over and getting their bellies tickled

just a great day all round – samaras has a brilliant game, hoops scores a hat-trick and then young Dylan comes on scores and by all accounts his mum in the crowd given it dixie and the match i was at today which saw Cliftonville beat the glens 2-1 with a 92nd minute og

What a performance a great goal by young Dylan.

Who did Sammi run to on the touchline after he scored.

  22. I hope that when we got young master McGeouch from the orcs, they insisted on a sell-on clause.

Imagine the consternation when we sell our double-CL winner to Barcelona (ok dreaming) for £40m and they don’t get a penny ‘cos they went bust in Jan 2012.
