Celtic-City partnership brings Roberts to Glasgow

497

Very pleased we have signed Patrick Roberts (18) on loan from Manchester City for 18 months. A few quick observations on this signing:

He’s another wide attacking player. I’ve lost count of the number of wide attacking players Ronny has signed but it’s far too many. Only Stuart Armstrong has come close to making regular appearances. This means we are still short of suitable options here, so need to recruit for the position, and that we have made a number of serious oversights.

The ideal signing is a loan with an option to buy. Next is a straight purchase, then a loan without an option to buy, but the market is changing.

I mentioned last month that as a consequences of the uber-rich hoarding players (Patrick is a case in point, £12m for a player who will be peripheral for years), mastering the loan market will be a key element to enable clubs to over perform.

Celtic appear to have struck up an understanding with Manchester City, one of the richest clubs/biggest hoarders in world football. There will be rich pickings here. Such was the demand for his signature, Patrick wouldn’t be near Celtic Park unless on a loan.

Jason Denayer’s time at Celtic worked very well for Celtic, the player and City, which is why we were able to secure Patrick for 18 months. More of this kind of thing, please, Celtic.

Welcome to Celtic, Patrick.

    The huddle,

He was criticised on cqn for starting v Ajax at CP.

  2. And yet…Derk still clings on.

And our former number one target(No laughing at the back) Ciftci, sent to Turkey.

So…get rid of one dire Turk, and replace him with another dire Turk.

Gets stranger as the day goes on.

    Anything is possible.

Turk swapping and a 12 million quid 18 yr old.

    Wooft.

  3. If Roberts is better than what we have then then what is so wrong in getting him in for a season and a half.

If his valuation of 12 million is correct then he probably is better than what we have.

Taking Johansen as an example, he is being accommodated – all managers have their favourites to be fair. When you do this, you don’t even consider the fact they may not be in your best 11. You don’t make the tough decision to substitute an experienced countryman when theres a youngster who could be sacrificed! Current form? Who cares eh.

If you want to go off at a tangent, I havent slated McGregor – but he has been brilliant and consistent the last few weeks – scoring, creating, comfortable on both feet, taking up good positions.

What other explanation is there for taking him off when there were at least 2 others who should have been in the firing line before him.

  5. I like the look of young Patrick and 18 months is a good time for us.

Have high hopes Christie will take the left slot and allow Armstrong to move inside to his natural position. We have to many midfielders so i imagine one or two may go out on loan.

    Where is Sandy Janko?

  6. BH-you always give guys a chance, but Richards lack of goals, and indiscipline is a worry. Why can we not sign a striker with a decent scoring record? We would be better bringing Scepovic back IMO HH

Yeah i know was just posting that for effect :O)

I think its obvious that McGregor will never be accepted by the fans, but it wont stop the same fans using him to bash the manager

  8. John James’ modus is to take bits and pieces of what other more informed bloggers have already posted and then position it as his original thinking. Whenever he has made a definitive statement on events he has been proved wrong.

He is clearly articulate, but don’t let that in itself convince you he is any more informed on what is going on than any of the rest of us.

When I read his comments I hear the voice of Laurie from Dennistoun, except despite his verbosity Laurie is a good Celtic supporter. JJ is just an attention seeker in my opinion.

Well,it seems Celtic think they’re onto a strategy that will prove successful given the circumstances of Scottish football,it seems a bit quantum theoretical to me but whae am I to argue? So in the meantime I’m just happy to read Sevco and all things Ibrox get pelters and take a soma holiday in the ole quantum of solace.

    Trad,

1, johansen is the more likely to finish a game. Fitness wise.

2, at the time of the sending off do you truly believe there were clearly two players to come off before mcgregor?

If so, what are their names?

    Sleekit csc ;)

  12. Shop window is the only reason I see Johansen starting games recently, and that doesn’t look like it’s worked.

  13. If Kazim signs put him in an empty room with keech jackson and matt linsey.

Then he would be a justifiable signing.

  14. So is Johansen a Ronny favourite and in his best 11 or not, a Celtic fan’s opinion changes from one blink of the eye to the next :O)

  15. Willo Flood and Derek Riordan…Get them back Peter.

Fit right in with your masterplan for Celtic:)

  16. !!Bada Bing!!

I thought this at first and got all excited, but alas he is represented by an agency called PUM…which means he’s a Trotskyist…

  17. I’ve seen Kazim play many times and hope he doesn’t sign for us, however his actions towards the media aren’t the reason, if he does sign I hope they just send him out to batter them all

Stuart Armstrong(no explanation required!), Stefan Johansen(ditto) and factoring in your lasting 90mins point(good one), we can add GMS to the mix ;)

When I was young it was very difficult to get in to the Celtic team.. It was very easy to get punted if you didn’t perform. Funny how things change, eh?

  20. How do we know Colins got a bad attitude. Dutch media saying he set about a reporter.thats why his club suspended him.well done to him.shower of twisted back stabbers As Mikey going to Sevco.here is something to Michael to remember. The Fields of Anthony.Michael they have taken you away.to be poisoned with there ways.

  21. Trad,

I honestly couldn’t pick someone to get hooked at that stage.

I did have a few in mind by the end though :)

You must be very old :O) when I was young plenty of average players got into Celtic teams I watched and they continued to be picked. That tradition has continued throughout my life.

  24. Fecking hell…get rid of one who allegedly battered Elvis.

And get another who has a stinking attitude, and wants to batter a reporter who says he was gash.

Then get rid of your former No 1 Target.

Who is running the transfers at Celtic ffs…it cannot be anybody that knows about football.

    Crazy stuff.

He’s scored 6 goals in total since he joined Sociedad.

If we were to sign him now, some would be up in arms at getting yet another non-scoring striker.

The next CQN article will be interesting….paul67/Lawwell will be hard pushed to spin this latest transfer window disaster into anything vaguely credible….

The only mitigation will be false promises re summer signings and if we are lucky a half dozen hopeless cases exiting before the window closes…

I watched in a CSC, pretty unanimous that it was extremely harsh given what McGregor has brought to the team of late and guys like Johansen flattering to deceive.

But ‘The Huddle’ thinks it is a legitimate argument that because other fans have criticised McGregor in the past, I am therefore not supposed to point out his excellent form at the moment and the fact that subbing him casts doubt on the managers judgement!

  28. When an EPL side buys an English player for £12 million, it means he’s worth about 5p in a sensible economic environment.

Would guess even we have three or four players in the same position better than this guy, can’t see him lasting out the season. As for CKR, his numbers look inferior compared with MAF.

    What is going on?

    There’s a plan? Jeezo!

it all depends on your perspective, i suppose, but i can’t see them seeing it as a disaster, or enough of us to see it the same way for it to warrant pr of any sort.

if ckr signs we have three new players signed for the first team who should all be improvements on who they are replacing
