Ex-ref taunts Neil Lennon with ‘explodes’ remark

1244

I think I live in a different world than some people.  In my world the manager of Celtic has endured an incredibly stressful month.  Yesterday he would have dealt with news from a serious criminal trial after a bomb was sent to him.

Today he is being taunted in a newspaper by a former referee who suggests he “explodes at the side of a park”.  Even for a former SFA official, this is astonishingly poor taste.  The article goes on to betray enormous hostility towards Neil Lennon and, for reasons which appear opportunistic, Peter Lawwell.

Our manager will get through these difficult weeks and will hopefully never have to endure such stresses again.  SFA officials, current or past, cannot meaningfully lay a glove on him.  He can pay their fines and will continue to manage a winning Celtic team.

mighty tim – I’d certainly welcome any political figure asking questions about the anti-Neil Lennon campaign in Scotland, including Gorgeous George.

However, I believe George Galloway is all about George Galloway, and his Respect party appears to me to be obsessed with Islamic interests.

Maybe they’d be able to sustain an interest in what’s going on in Scotland if it were somehow linked to events in Afghanistan or Palestine. (thumbsup)

  4. Collyer Bristow is understood to be facing claims of alleged professional negligence and breach of fiduciary duty in the fallout over the administration of Rangers FC.

The club’s administrators at Duff & Phelps, Paul Clark and David Whitehouse, have said that they have “substantially larger” claims to make against the firm, with the High Court ruling that all submissions must be lodged by 16 April.

The news comes after the administrators successfully applied to the High Court earlier this month to transfer £3.6m of client money from Collyer Bristow to Taylor Wessing, which is acting for the administrators. Restructuring partner Nick Moser and Mark Phillips QC and Daniel Bayfield at South Square Chambers made the High Court application. There is a dispute about who can access the money between the UK tax authorities, a pension fund and Duff & Phelps, who are all claiming a share.

A statement from joint administrator Clark said: “On other litigation matters, on 23 March the High Court in London ordered that in addition to the current proceedings regarding the £3.6m that was transferred into the safekeeping of the administrators’ lawyers, Taylor Wessing, the parties with claims against Collyer Bristow (the former lawyers to Craig Whyte and Rangers FC) should bring their claims by 16 April 2012.

“This has widened the court proceedings because we have substantially larger claims against Collyer Bristow which we wish to bring as soon as possible. The original trial dates of 30 March – 4 April are now not being utilised as the wider claims are still being formulated. A further hearing will take place as soon as possible after the deadline for claims against Collyer Bristow of 16 April.

“As regards the general administration process, we, as the club’s administrators, would like to pay tribute to Rangers supporters for their continuing outstanding efforts to support the Club at this time.

“We appreciate greatly the contributions made to the Rangers Fighting Fund and welcome the fact that those who are administering the fund have taken the decision to release funds which will offset some of the debts owed by the club to other clubs.”

To date, Taylor Wessing restructuring partner Nick Moser and Mark Phillips QC and Daniel Bayfield at South Square Chambers are understood to be acting for Rangers’ administrators. They made a successful application to the High Court to transfer £3.6m in client money from Collyer Bristow to Taylor Wessing.

The Lawyer understands that Collyer Bristow has instructed Clyde & Co partner Richard Harrison and senior associate Nicole McKinnon to act on its behalf. They have appointed 3VB’s Cyril Kinsky QC and Matthew Hardwick.

There is a dispute about who can access the money between the UK tax authorities, a pension fund and Duff & Phelps, who are all claiming a share.

Collyer Bristow became involved with Rangers when partner Gary Withey, who recently left the firm (5 March 2012), advised businessman Craig Whyte on his takeover of the club last year.

Collyer Bristow director Paul Newhall told The Lawyer: “On Friday 23 March Rangers’ administrators at Duff & Phelps made an application to the High Court to vacate the trial that had been due to commence today (Friday 30 March) in London.

“This was a change in stance, given their previous insistence that the expedited hearing of the case was ’critical’ to the ongoing administration of the club.

“They have now indicated that they wish to widen the scope of the proceedings beyond establishing entitlement to the £3.9m – currently held by Taylor Wessing to the order of the court.

“Given that Collyer Bristow does not claim any entitlement to the £3.9m we did not resist the administrators’ request to delay the court proceedings. However, we would like to make it clear that Collyer Bristow will robustly defend any additional claims brought by the administrators against them.”

Was in Bairds, the Hoops and Tolbooth recently- good to see the old place thriving with Bhoys and Ghirls, young and old. Long may it continue- lets not forget our waterfing holes have also been the target of the same campaigns which our people have suffered for 125 years and which have intensified of late.

  17. Philvis, I agree that any politician backing Lenny and asking questions would be beneficial. I know Galloway is borderline with his Islamic attitude and rubs people up the wrong way, but I seriously believe that he would pursue the scum up here and ask the pertinent questions on why they abuse Lenny.

I know a little about the impact that a politician asking questions of certain institutions can have ( I work in sport ) and it can devastate them if done in the right way.

I will write to Mr Galloway and ask him to try and get some answers re the abuse of NFL. If he does get involved then I will post here.

An Iowa man lost his IT job after he was caught on video allegedly urinating on the desk chairs of those employees he found prettiest — and now police are mulling whether to charge him criminally.

After several female employees began complaining of suspicious stains on their chairs last month, the West Des Moines office of Farm Bureau Financial Services rigged up security cameras to get to the bottom of the problem, the Des Moines Register reported.

The 59-year-old man, an IT employee at the company, was allegedly caught in the act Saturday on videotape and promptly fired.

Corporate vice president Lauri Strottman told police that as an IT employee, the man had access to the company database, where he would view employee photos, pick out the most attractive employees and then urinate on their chairs, according to the West Des Moines Patch.

Strottman said that when he was confronted and fired, the man admitted to “doing inappropriate things.”

Police are now considering second-degree criminal mischief charges against him, according to the Register.

His alleged habit reportedly caused $4,500 worth of damage to the office chairs

  23. NEIL LENNON wants his players to rediscover the freshness of their 27-match unbeaten run when they face St Johnstone on Sunday.

The Hoops have stumbled to defeat in their last two matches, the League Cup Final against Kilmarnock and an Old Firm reverse at Ibrox, but could finish the weekend as SPL champions.

If Rangers drop anything at third-placed Motherwell tomorrow, Celtic can clinch the title with a win over St Johnstone on Sunday.

Lennon hasn’t had to seek trouble over the last week with two SFA enquires under way into his conduct but, despite those distractions, his focus is on getting his players over the finishing line and completing the season in style with the SPL and Scottish Cup double very much alive.

    WINNING

“Lets get back to winning ways,” has been the message to the Hoops players from their gaffer this week. “They’re not playing too badly, they need to get rid of the mental fatigue and bring a freshness to their football, play the way that they can and entertain the supporters.

“People on the outside are looking in for the slightest excuse at the team. To turn around a 15-point gap to an 18-point lead, you’d have to accuse the other team (Rangers) of bottling it, never mind Celtic.

“We have a young team who have made huge strides this season and are progressing very well. There’s a little bit of mental fatigue there now, we recognise that and will do all we can to address it as quickly as possible.”

  24. Long time lurker, seldom poster, down here in Oz. Please scroll past if accountancy/auditing bores you.

    Kitalba,

I skimmed your re-production of the financial assessment criteria of the SFA/SPL earlier (I’m not sure which it was). For what it’s worth, we have very similar corporate law and identical accounting and auditing standards in Oz as in the UK (IFRS = International Financial Reporting Standards).

Companies (i.e. the shareholders) appoint the (external) auditors. So the SFA have no power to appoint the (external) auditors who sign the audit opinion on the financial statements. In the past 20 years, however, it has become common practice for listed companies, public interest entities and public sector entities to appoint internal auditors (as opposed to the external auditors who audit the annual financial statements).

There would be nothing to stop the SFA (via their member clubs) adopting a rule that an SFA-appointed internal auditor be allowed access to the accounting records of member clubs as a licensing condition. There could be a set of financial assessment criteria established that were mandatory and acted as an early warning of the kind of wrong-doing the Huns appear to have been up to for years. Of course, it would have to apply to all clubs. This would avoid the current charade being played between the Huns and Grant Thornton, where no audited statements are finalised.

The problem the huns have is two-fold:

    1. If Grant Thornton (their external auditors) were to sign an audit opinion at the moment on the outstanding financial statements (year ended 30 June 2011) they would have to qualify their opinion given that the Huns are no longer a “going concern.” After all, the Huns are in administration, can’t pay their debts as and when they fall due and can’t see beyond the end of the season, never mind the 12 months from the date of signing the audit opinion that the auditors would require to sign an unqualified audit opinion. That means according to the rules you quoted they cannot obtain a licence from the SFA/SPL as well as UEFA.

    2. If they don’t produce any audited financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2011 = no licence.

As I said I only skimmed what you re-produced, so I don’t know all the rules and whether the SFA have any Masonic get-out clauses.

But you may already know all this already! If so, apologies for the accounting/auditing post!

    Pacific Pete
