Fans will be at Hampden, you can bet their lives on it

Politics is very much at play in football these days.  With Boris Johnson indicating yesterday that he expects up to 10,000 fans inside football stadiums from 17 May, you can expect his Holyrood shadow to propose a similar plan, perhaps a week later/earlier, as has been her way for 11 months.

If the 17 May date feels arbitrary, it is not.  Euro 20201 fixtures get underway a month later, offering populist governments a way to compare how far along the recovery road their surviving citizens are.  Governments in London and Edinburgh will permit domestic fans to attend games just in time for their flag waving opportunities.

There will be fans at Wembley and Hampden, irrespective of what’s going on in public health, you can bet their lives on it.

Celtic Football Club today announced that Neil Lennon has resigned from his position as football manager with immediate effect.

Neil has served the club with distinction as both player and manager, delivering numerous successes, most recently completing the Domestic Treble in December. In his second period as Celtic manager, he has achieved five trophy successes, to add to his three League titles and two Scottish Cup victories in his first period as manager.

Current assistant manager, John Kennedy, will take interim charge of the team.

Neil Lennon said: “We have experienced a difficult season due to so many factors and, of course, it is very frustrating and disappointing that we have not been able to hit the same heights as we did previously.

“I have worked as hard as ever to try and turn things around, but unfortunately we have not managed to get the kind of run going that we have needed.

“I have always given my best to the Club and have been proud to deliver silverware to the Celtic supporters. The Club will always be part of me. I will always be a Celtic supporter myself and I will always want the best for Celtic.

“I would like to thank so many people at the Club who have given me so much and I would also like to thank my family for their love and support. I wish the Celtic supporters, players, staff and directors nothing but success for the future.”

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell added: “I would like to pay tribute to Neil for all he has done for the Club in his second spell, delivering our eighth and ninth successive league titles, the Quadruple Treble and winning the last five available domestic trophies.

“Neil has always been and will always be a true Celtic man and someone I will always hold in the highest regard.

“I have watched Neil fight many battles over many years, on and off the field, with a courage and tenacity few could match. Even this season, he has fought so hard and worked tirelessly to turn things around.

“While this season has not progressed as we would have liked, it cannot diminish the character or integrity of a man who has given the Club so much.

“Personally, it is a sad day for me to see Neil leave the Club. Neil is a man of quality and decency, he is someone who will always be part of the fabric of Celtic and someone who will always be welcomed at Celtic Park.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, and personally, I would like to thank Neil for his work as our manager and I wish him and his family good health and continued success in everything they do.”

Celtic’s principal shareholder Dermot Desmond commented: “Neil is a Celtic legend both as a player and manager. He has given so much to the Club, and with his success over the last number of years – including winning a Treble in his own right – he will be very difficult to replace.

“We thank Neil sincerely for all he has done for the club and we wish him every success going forward.”

  2. New manager bounce to see Kennedy win the cup then get given the gig full-time in the shower?

    What odds can I get?

  3. Very sad to see Neil resign.

This extraordinarily wretched season with its not unreasonable expectations left his departure inevitable.

Good luck, take care of yourself and God bless you Neil Lennon.

  4. CQN article sez ‘sacked’ while the club statement says ‘resigned’.

Neil – despite the venom outside the club and even inside the fanbase – says he’s still a Celtic fan and man.

Thanks Neil for yr role in our success, but not so much for the aching, crushing disappointment of this year.

The official statement – late as it was – was replete with a respect and grace unlikely to be observed among many media and social media outlets. As we farewell a great Celtic man…we now go again. HH

  5. As Paul67 said, sacking the manager is the easy part. The next appointment has to be spot-on.

I’m guessing that if we’re interviewing for a sporting director role, no manager will be appointed until after then.

Kennedy until the end of the season I reckon.

  6. This decision is about season ticket sales.

Arrogant but by their standards not in the least surprising, the chatter on social media is obviously being taken seriously but not so seriously that they did any real planning in advance.

We need a complete clear out at every level on and off the field.

Our hoped for 10 IAR season ends ignominiously with a nobody in temporary charge, are you watching Mr Desmond? Do you really believe you and your board did your best for the club?

Thank you Neil Francis Lennon for your contribution to our wonderful club and very best wishes for your future.

  7. Due to results NL leaving was inevitable , we might never know what the circumstances are that have led to the football performances in all competitions this season, however the club cannot feel sorry for itself and must address all the areas that require attention and get the best it can for those areas.

I hope he takes a break from football entirely now as the media will want to feed on the corpse of Celtic’s season.

All the best NL the person for your future.

Neil Lennon out,Kennedy is manager till end of the season

  9. I love Lenny as some of you may know but yes his decision to go is months too late.

I said after his first appointment it would end in tears. I didn’t want him as manager first time around never mind second. And the way the Board reappointed him in 2019 was wrong on so many levels.

Then there’s the Board’s inability to see after Ferencvaros especially he had to go and resurrect our challenge for 10.

It is unforgivable on both Neil and the Board’s part to have failed to realise change was needed.

Their inability or unwillingness to take action timeously cost us the 10, they gave up the league without a whimper.

All that said I will be forever grateful to Neil for his contribution to our club.

The shit he endured from those outside our club and to those so called supporters has been nothing short of disgraceful.

I will never demean Neil as an individual but he was not the manager we needed to take us forward. He was the right option when Rodgers left but he should not have been reappointed for 2019/2020.

I wish Neil nothing but good things.

    Something inside so strong.

    Until we meet again…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  10. Strange emotions – the Manager had to go, that’s how it is in football. Still, I do feel sad for Neil as he has given so much to the Club. Why do people have to make it so personal – an increasing nastiness that has crept into football generally? We are supposed to be different, we even used to talk about loving ‘all things Celtic’.

  11. All the best Lenny Celtic legend more good times than bad think he’ll be on sky next season and put that tit Boyd in his place.

  12. I’m done debating Lennon.

    I’m glad he’s gone.

    I’m glad Lawwell is going.

Our Club can now look forward after 9 months of historic incompetence and arrogance.

  13. Weebobbycollins on

And now the players have to accept some of the responsibility for all that has gone wrong. They have let Neil down big-style…

I disagree with your first part, it is not all about STs in my opinion. Yes, renewals generally do get issued in March. However, I believe these will not be issued until it is clear who our DoF and new management team are known. It has generally been accepted that there would be a change next season. Some were believing Neil would be here next season, supported by his comments in public.

There is also the unknown with covid with us. The club in my opinion will not put packages out until there is a clearer picture on what is happening with this. They will hopefully reflect pricing of ST, especially the criticism levelled quite rightly this season of how they have treated STH and for the shambolic and amateurish VST.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  15. Sad day in a way – but glad it’s happened – sorry for Lennon the man but not the manager.

Hope I don’t read that DD or PL wanted him to stay.

Good luck JK for the rest of the season.

  16. Good luck lennie – many many dynamics this season – too much for the club. I’ve got depression – can’t tell you what he means to me. Glad for him and the club he’s gone.

  17. Lennybhoy @ 7.57 100% agree with that

So thanks Neil Francis Lennon, for all you done pre Sept 2020 🤣

You leave having achieved a quadruple treble and 9 in a row

Doesn’t get away from a massive dissapointment in John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan still being in position

They must share the blame for where we find ourselves

John Kennedy as assistant manager the statement says, and not coach, and GVin Strachan as coach

This will most certainly Not appease the fans even in short term

All 3, Neil, John and Gavin should have been gone

  18. Norriem

If they haven’t got someone permanent lined up then they had no choice but to appoint JK in the interim.

One may say they should have but we need to deal with the reality.

    Jobs to do

  19. Lennybhoy on 24th February 2021 8:11 am

You obviously still have more faith in our off field operations than I do.

I look back and see them making the same mistakes every summer, same delays in signing new players, selling good players and replacing with dross, wasting money on rank rotten signings, not planning for Europe. The fiasco of this season is yet another example of the lack of planning and decisive action.

Same wrong decisions every single year, we have thrown away all the benefits of the 9 in a row run.

I don’t believe for one second that they have a robust plan for a new management structure.

Even if by a miracle the prove me wrong and pull a rabbit out of the hat it will be done too late.

This board would love every season to be like 20/21, money in, supporters out and no scrutiny.

As you can see I’m a tad annoyed.

  20. JK not the answer. Not even an interim one.

He has to carry the can for his coaching role in unacceptable defensive “tactics”.

  21. Gene

We have known this day was coming

There is numerous un-employed candidates out there, we could have got for a 2-3months short term contract, if we wanted one

John Kennedy only offers a familiar face to the players

My own view, the full Management and coaching team should have gone

The team looks to be lacking in many areas, surely this is not solely down to to Neil

His back up team have been lacking in their jobs, or have they been undermining Neil ???

  22. jimbob71 & little Miss jimbob on

Good luck and take care Neil.

Shame it has come to this but this should have happened months ago.

If it doesn’t work out with JK i nominate myself to drive him to the airport, he only lives down the road from me.

    Wait…….. ;-)
