“Giant punishments” on Rangers were illusory, you were punished instead

1014

Malcolm Murray, the newly appointed chairman of the Newco club Charles Green hopes to establish, yesterday entertained us with his comments on punishments served on a football team suspected of cheating you for over a decade.  He said:

“We’ve had giant punishments already – a European ban, a 10-point deduction, the emotional trauma everyone has suffered. I think, for the good of Scottish football, it’s much better Rangers in the SPL.”

There has been no European ban.  Newco will not be eligible for European competition because it is a Newco and Uefa requires three years accounts from participating clubs.  They are simply not eligible, they have not and will not achieve the qualification criteria for European football for three years.

The 10-point penalty imposed on Rangers last season for seeking protection from creditors by going into administration is hardly a “giant” punishment.  It changed nothing.  Rangers were second in the league when it was imposed and remained so.  They released no players and went on to defeat Motherwell twice, ensuring they finished the league in second place, earning £900k in additional prize money.

As a punishment, it is the equivalent of banning Ally McCoist from this year’s 100m Olympic competition.  Pointless.

Which leaves us with “the emotional trauma everyone has suffered”.  Compared to the emotional trauma suffered by Dundee, Motherwell, Gretna, Third Lanark fans, recent events have been nothing more than a focus for some robust rallying calls.

Don’t even start me on the emotional cost of losing the league in 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011, all to a team of cheats.  How do you measure that?  Think back to each day we lost those titles and tell me how you felt about them then and how you feel now, knowing you were cheated.

“John MacMillan, general secretary of the Rangers Supporters’ Association, said: “There is a feeling among a few of the clubs they should let Rangers sink. But if they don’t let us into the SPL it is a disaster for Scottish football.”

And he really believes this. They all do.

MacMillan and quite a few others are guilty of failing to recognise a sea change in attitudes – that rarest of political beasts – a bottom up, people led revolution against the reigning orthodoxy.

When they wake up, it will be too late.

    Morning, folks.

Just read The Rangers opening gambit: You cant erase our past but we can erase your future’. (You always know it’s authentic when they can’t spell/apostrophise). They really are begging for John Williams’ Imperial March as their theme tune, except that they cant afford the full orchestral version and will settle for that fan and his teddy-bear synth.

Delighted for Sammi and his Hellenic heroes, and couldn’t resist laughing at Dick just one more time. All that talent at his disposal and he still cocks it up – good to know he hasn’t lost the Sidam touch.

Slightly concerned on the home front. In our European games, 4 players stood out – Forster, Samaras, Wanyama and Ki, and recent headlines haven’t been doing much for my confidence regarding our ability to make inroads into the Champions League. Ki may have had a disappointing season by his standards, but we need players like him when we come up against continental sides – players who have a calmness on the ball and an intelligence in the decision-making.

Listened to the Sportsound broadcast last night. In bending over backward to help the Ibrox team, the authorities are turning this into a fiasco. Celtic have sold their season tickets for the next season. With the SFA looking to rush in League reform, I don’t know if I will get all the games I paid for or will have to pay more for extra games. The rest of the clubs can hardly sell any of their tickets as their supporters are more adamant than us that the Newhuns don’t start in the SPL. Dundee and Dunfermline are selling what tickets they can and budgeting for being in the First Division. The laws of the game aren’t specific enough to say for certain which one should return if Newco aren’t allowed straight in the SPL. Rangers(in all its forms) have missed the latest deadline for submitting their accounts (15th June, extended from 15th March) The deadline isn’t there to inconvenience Clubs. We are in a position where we don’t know if we need a team that only has to beat M’well to win the League. Even with our high season ticket sales, we would lose income without a Rangers in our fixture list. How can we make player transfer decisions with that uncertainty? We are in a much better situation than the other clubs. Having read Paul McConville’s less than entirely good news blog about the likelyhood of club being sperate from owner, I can see Monday turning into a vote on The Rangers coming into the SPL and the punishment from Rangers IA’s outstanding discaplinaries following the decision hopefully very quickly.

    Off to mass.

  5. Elbows McCulloch former player of a former club once known as Rangers FC is qoted as having said

“I am going nowhere, I am staying with Rangers,” he confirmed. “Whether we’re in the SPL, the Third Division or anywhere in between I will be with Rangers.

I’d make it a personal mission to win back the title from Celtic if we’re still in the SPL.”

Hasn’t anyone the former players yet that Rangers will not be playing anywhere next season – They are dead as Ut a mortuis Norwegian Lorem (A dead Norwegian Blue). It’s gone dead – deceased / gone and it will not be winning anything fairly or otherwise ever ever ever again.

Stupid stupid hun. And WFT is the media doing printing such dross – perhaps they just do not get it either .

  6. Any player who does not want to join Sevco can leave for nothing.

It is not clear (a) if Rangers will play football this coming season and (b) if so which division it will be in. In those circumstances, as Sevco is unlikely to be able to pay a full squad of players if not playing at all, or in the third division, the prospect of a new deal elsewhere becomes the “bird in the hand option”.

Sevco faces losing a number of its top players for nothing in the next very short while. I am not saying that that will happen, but any agent will be making sure his client understands the possible financial implications of deciding to stay on at Ibrox, should there be any credible interest at all elsewhere. If players do elect to stay, this will be trumpeted as a vote of confidence in Mr Green, and as exhibiting loyalty to Rangers, even if the reason is that no one else was interested. That however probably counts as “legitimate” PR!

The next few days will be very interesting. Who will sign on for the Sevco experience, and who will leave for their own financial well being and security?

  9. Question for our experts out there.

Much talk about season ticket sales at Ibrokes. Cannot get my head around what they are selling.

This company called TRFC is not a registered football club with any Football body in Scotland SFA/SPL so what are they offerring in return for the season book? Friendlies the ‘chance’ of being able to watch competative football in some league.

Is the latter not gambling and do they have a license?

  10. St john Doyle. Nice way to spend fathers days

But Oldco aren’t deid yet, in the last weeks of life , but they have not been officially liquidated yet

Never less should be a great fathers day

Maybe I could ask my wife to do the same on 1st sat in setember and get her to take me to Celtic park for lunch , tad expensive tho including flights

  11. Good mornings friends from a grey and damp looking east Kilbride.

And to those who are both blessed with children and of the qualifying gender a Big Happy Fathers Day!

  12. I was speaking to Ramie a couple of hours ago and he was telling me about his golf club. Apparently every year, in memory of Derek ‘cup-tie’ McKay (RIP) who scored two goals for Aberdeen against Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final of 1970, they have a wee perennial fund raiser for Martin, in memory of Derek; one of Derek’s greatest claims was he was a great mate of Kano… and he was.

This year was no different and again all the golf playing Scottish community of Perth, W.A. held their usual vigil, game, bevie and fund raiser. Their efforts and generosity are going to enable Kano to go on his first overseas holiday since he was taken ill.

Kano does not need a passport for his travels; he is going to Rottnest, an island off the coast of Western Australia. As far as Kano is concerned… it is a trip to the moon.

    I’m chuffed for Kano.

I’m chuffed Kano has a mate like Ramie and had mates like Derek.

  13. Good question deekbhoy

Any view on the part which Campbell ogilve would have played in the machevellian developments at the SFA (noted below from article in SoS)…..

The real danger of keeping a “heavily conflicted” senior manager in place is the man in the street CANNOT TRUST A SINGLE DECISION THE ORGANISATION MAKES.

“The crisis at Rangers is set to bring about a radical change in the structure of Scottish football, which could pave the way for the Ibrox club to be demoted just one division.

The Scottish Football Association is ready to merge the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League into a single league body in time for the start of the new season. Under the new league set-up, the top and second tiers of that league would stay the same size as the current SPL and First Division – 12 and ten respectively – and be rebranded “premier”, effectively meaning that the present First Division would become an SPL 2.

A whole raft of changes as recommended in the 2010 report by former First Minister Henry McLeish will also be introduced………

“The time for action is now,” said an SFA source, who did not deny that the association was taking advantage of the Rangers debacle to promote its longed-for reforms. The source said: “When one of the biggest clubs in the country is liquidated, something has to change.”

    ———————

This makes me feel slightly sick.

  16. A question for our resident financial and insolvency gurus. Can a company that has yet to be ‘officially’ placed into liquidation somehow avoid this by someone with very deep pockets buying the shares of the company £20 mil, and then offering a new and improved CVA to creditors say 25p in the £?

  17. From the Express. Haven’t seen it anywhere else. Two months to get round to it. SFA’s finger right on the pulse:

“McCoist broke off his holiday, not for the first time, to reassure fans that he will be at Ibrox for the foreseeable future and to deal with business for the stricken club.

Ironically, that came as it was disclosed that the SFA are going to charge him over his outburst in April when he demanded to know the names of the members of the SFA’s Independent Judicial Panel.”

  18. Shame that Celtic feel the need to criticise Burley, given our proud history, one illiterate neds opinion is not worth Celtic to become anal-retentive. Celtic’s comments betray a lot of insecurity about its standing and worth. The BBC are #1 for being up themselves, Celtic dont want the #2 slot.
