Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

Surely a key consideration for who the new man/woman will be is how effective the new manager is with large squads. The other fundamental requirement regarding Celtic at this juncture is how adaptable they are.

Deila’s biggest weakness was not being able to get a team to fit into his favoured formation and then buying additional players who also didn’t fit the formation.

The new person’s first task is to create a cohesive 18 players who can rotate in a system which they are comfortable in.

If they can’t do that or at least be seen to improving that aspect they’re going to have as rough a time as Ronny.

  16. Guys can you help me. Yesterday all the talk was about B Rodgers (with a D) as our manager, today it’s not on? Is this from the SMSM as I don’t see anything on Celtic FC website.

Like when Canalmar was raising res12, saying Celtic were doing nothing I said then that when Celtic FcC make a statement that is when i will believe that statement. Celtic told the res12 guys that they had indeed questioned the SFA and they were not happy with reply and so we will have Gaurdian add next week. Res12 guys keep pushing and thanks for all your work and time.

I hope Celtic release who the new manger is on Friday and maybe cut into the breadmans 10 pages of glorious 4 year history of Sevco. HIBS for the cup.

All you guys who are telling us that you are not renewing your season tickets, don’t be so melodramatic like a feqqing diva, just do it and leave more seats free for me when I get back July/August l was a season ticket holder and never saw us win hehaw until I was 20 when we beat Dunfermline. You’ve never had it so good.

    HH

  17. I can’t believe all the panty-wetting about today’s statement.

It’s clear it has been issued in response to intense speculation that Brendan Rodgers was about to be appointed and it tells us to hold up a minute, we’re still considering who to appoint.

But to me it’s not so much aimed at us, as the candidates, whoever they may be.

Let’s say we’re considering Lambert and Moyes as well as Rodgers. This is telling them nothing has been decided, we’re not about to appoint someone else before we give you a chance.

At the end of the day, we might get Rodgers, we might get someone else we already know of, or it might be someone we’ve never heard of. There’s nothing any of us can do about it, so what’s the point in coming over all Corporal Jones about it?

Whoever is appointed, has my support, which is not conditional on appointing my preferred candidate as manager.

  18. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I have no inside track whatsoever – but I would reckon that DD & PL are savvy enough to know that the time is right for someone more “box office” than “box car”.

I would be surprised if managers salary in itself would be a stumbling block – more a case of whether anybody with a high enough profile is prepared to take the gig with supporter expectations so high and available funds so low. Rodgers or Moyes would be a big coup under those circumstances.

As Level 5 are known to be PR for the Huns, you can be as disingenuous as you like.

Don’t call me a hun and don’t insinuate it.

This is meant to be a site for debate on subjects close to the minds and hearts of Celtic supporters. By Celtic supporters.

Debate is sensible, and generally positive in the long term. Always has been.

I’ve never suggested that you are not a Celtic supporter. Don’t suggest that I’m not.

Stop the spin, a didn’t call you a Hun, I called you a level 5 helper so I’m afraid you’ll have to deal with it, as I do, when you join in with your little clandestine mates when they’r ripping into me, with you snide jibes, does that come under sensible debate,? Is that close to YOUR mind and heart? I think the debate on YOU saying PL wasted £10 million pounds with no back up or evidence is an accusation, and it’s not your first, on him or DD or the CFC board.

So don’t be giving me the holier than thou moral high ground post, your no kidding me on at all, like all of us you dish it out, I’ve said many many times, like many others you give it to the board, PL, DD, on here, and I back them, and always will, you don’t like accusations? Well here’s a newsflash neither do I against the said names I just posted, they’r not here to defend the selfs, you are and that’s the difference, so like it or lump it, I’m defending them, who am I? A Celtic supporter not apologising for sticking up for my club, people get fed up with me posting this, same as I get fed up with them posting the same sheet as you, there’s yer debate, and yer dinner.

Dermott Desmond and chief executive Peter Lawwell are in the process of appointing a new Celtic manager

Celtic may decide on their new manager within a couple of days, according to their biggest individual shareholder Dermot Desmond.

Desmond told the BBC the club have interviewed over six candidates, with Brendan Rodgers known to be among those to have spoken to Celtic.

And the former Liverpool boss was described as “a great manager” by the Irish businessman.

“A worthy candidate for Celtic – as are all the candidates,” said Desmond.

  28. Anyhow,

Now that the manager is almost in place, and assuming it’s a name we are all pretty much happy with, whits res 12 status?

If that reaches a satisfactory conclusion, whit subject can we use now to delay our season ticket purchase to our benefit?

I think it’s a disgrace you can’t buy stovies at the food kiosks. I’m starting a ‘ no stovies no season book ‘ campaign.
