Performing with an edge, naked opportunism

1065

If you were a professional football player, you would love to be in the Celtic dressing room tomorrow evening.  You would have the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself; put in a big, meaningful performance.  Record a bit of history and create a uniquely memorable victory.

There are some players who are fraught with anxiety on such occasions, but there are others who NEED these games, need an edge, to reach their peak.  If we have a team full of the latter, Legia are in for a torrid night.

I’m doing my best to ignore the naked opportunism in our media this week.  There is no point complaining about it, lose heavily and you become vulnerable to those who live to revel in a Celtic defeat.  Don’t lose and you don’t give them (friends and foes alike) a chance.

We’ve been here before.  Artmedia, Braga, Utrecht, Sion (despite the reprieve) and Karagandy all exposed an aching heart.  European football is unforgiving, try to transition and you’ll find someone ready to exploit, but that doesn’t mean you are wrong to transition.

We might talk about this transition more later in the month but we have a game to win first.  Can’t wait.

Check out the fantastic work by the cyclists who are taking part in the Paradise to Cardenden Cycle 2014 on 6 September. You can join them – all you need is a bike. Get involved, you’ll be delighted you did, I promise. Read about it here.

  1. SFTB

    Thanks for the reply.

I did say I don’t believe Pete meant any harm, and that’s why I didn’t post on the first occasion he mentioned this shortly after the World Cup final.

However, I believe that many people still see Anorexia Nervosa and other Eating Disorders as ‘life-style’ choices, rather than the serious psychiatric illnesses that they are.

It is a much misunderstood illness, and suffers accordingly at times from a lack of public sympathy for sufferers.

I recently had to object to a journalist’s use of ‘anorexic’ to describe the starting price of a horse. I won’t name him, as his editor was sympathetic to my complaint and took action to make sure it wouldn’t be repeated.

If you’re reading Petethebeat, any harshness,as pointed out by SFTB,in my previous post was unintentional.

    Sad news about your friend.

Prayers said for those who remain.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Chris, may he rest in peace.

  4. My team for Wednesday:

    Stokes Griffiths

    Commons

    Izaguirre Johansen Biton McGregor

    Mulgrew VVD Lustig

3-5-2 – Back 3 staying narrow to limit space around 18 yard area where they picked a few passes with ease last week, with Johansen & Biton sitting deep and moving out to cover space left by Izzy & McGregor when they push forward. I’ve taken Mulgrew & Lustig over Izzy & Matthews in the back three simply as I feel they are better defenders.

Izzy where he is purely for his ability to deliver from last third, which I see as his biggest strength without him having as much pressure to defend (I’m not sure if Forrest is fit or he would get this spot). We know what McGregor can do.

For me LG is the best striker we have at making runs and finishing. Stokes and KC are cute enough to feed him and both can score. More importantly, all of them will shoot on-site which is what I always want from a striker, but definitely what we need on Wednesday.

Can’t afford any passengers, but lose a goal & it’s over. For this reason I would make the jobs of Johansen & Biton the key to making it work. They must work there socks off.

Let’s go for it. Bang 2 in before half time, get the crowd going & I can see this mob collapsing. They’re not bad, but they’re not Pep’s Barca either. Let’s see how they react when it’s squeaky bum time.

It’ll be tough, but never forget – WE ARE GLASGOW CELTIC

  5. I posted a prayer yesterday and following such, was asked by some, am I excluding other suffering children re?……Well of course not (and I responded saying so) but on reflection, perhaps my response and desire for ‘fairness’ overshadowed the fact that the prayer repeated below is/are not my words; I am just repeating a prayer, which I find at this time to be in accord with current events………

The Queenship of Mary, or Our Lady, Queen of Palestine

O Mary Immaculate, gracious Queen of Heaven and of Earth, behold us prostrate before thy exalted throne. Full of confidence in thy goodness and in thy boundless power, we beseech thee to turn a pitying glance upon Palestine, which, more than any other country, belongs to thee, since thou hast graced it with thy birth, thy virtues and thy sorrows, and from there hast given the Redeemer to the world.

Remember that there especially thou wast constituted our tender Mother, the dispenser of graces. Watch, therefore, with special protection over thy native country, dispel from it the shades of error, for it was there that the Son of Eternal Justice shone. Bring about the speedy fulfillment of the promise, which issued from the lips of thy Divine Son, that there should be one fold and one Shepherd.

Obtain for us all that we may serve the Lord in sanctity and justice during all the days of our life, so that, by the merits of Jesus and with thy motherly aid, we may pass at last from this earthly Jerusalem to the splendors of the heavenly one. Amen.

So no direct quotes from anyone?

If that’s the case I think it’s made up nonsense mate.

  7. iPaddy McCourt on

It can’t be just lower tier tomorrow night. I’ve just been to the Murrayfield ticket office and the only option available was south stand upper, section 6 directly above the area the green brigade were in for the Reykjavik game

  8. Got a letter this morning confirming that I am now on the electoral register and am eligible to vote in the referendum.

    It’s a YES from me.

So glad I came back to the old country just in time.

    4-0 Celtic tomorrow.

    Bring it on.

  9. beatbhoy, sftb

Apologies for the ‘anorexic’ comment – I won’t use it again.

I have a bugbear with Broadfoot being called ‘Clubfoot’.

My nephew was born with one (the proper name is ‘talipes’) and although straightened so that it looks ok to somebody who doesn’t know, he doesn’t run 100% fluently and still has a slight limp.

  10. MWD

I am of the opinion that KC is one of the few players we have that will not be tempted away by more money, all that I read about him suggests him and his family are settled where they are,not sure a couple of grand a week would be that important to him,but will he want one more challenge in his career, time will tell

  11. iPaddy McCourt on

Should be a decent atmosphere if the lower tier is sold out and they’re now selling upper tier tickets. Of course, an early goal for Legia will kill it stone dead. Get in 1-0 up at half time and we can do it

A poster on here recommended a book by a guy called Simon Jordan, who bought Crystal Palace. The book is called “Be careful what you wish for” and was a very good read.

He names and shames loads of people in football in England including some agents who were only in it for themselves.

    Worth a read.

  14. Hamiltontim

Upper tier is now open but being sold a section at a time.

    ————

Upper tier was open last week as well, as that’s where we got our tickets.

  15. Just received this from SCIAF. Sorry I am not able to download the part which enables on line donations, but there is a phone number for donations.

War causes such pain wherever it happens. I know you’ve seen the suffering in Gaza, and I know you want to help.

Please make a donation right now to give medical care, food and essentials such as soap to families on the brink of life or death.

Since early July, hundreds of innocent civilians – many of them children – have been killed in Gaza. Over 7,500 homes destroyed by bombs, shells and rocket fire. Refugee camps, hospitals, schools, and places of worship have been hit. Many people have no electricity, no running water, no doctors. These people need help, and you can give it by making a donation.

Through our sister agency Caritas Jerusalem we’re already helping 96,000 men, women and children caught up in this terrible conflict but we want to help more. Your donation will give them:

    • Urgent medical care

    • Food and blankets

    • Other basic essentials like soap, and buckets for collecting water

Please give what you can. To donate over the phone please call 0141 354 5555.

Gaza’s in the headlines right now, but we haven’t forgotten about families suffering in other conflict areas like South Sudan and Central African Republic. The money you donate today will be spent in Gaza and in other war zones where people are desperate for medicine, food and shelter.

I don’t believe Commons is on anything in excess of £20k/week, I’d be extremely surprised if he was.

KC will only move if Celtic choose to sell him. I don’t think his wage demands will be excessive hence why I think this story is nonsense.

When Oldco were after Commons , I read they offered him 13k a week, and we offered 16 k a week
