Pure, athletic, Thatcherism

935

It’s all politics.  Not actual politics, in the strict definition of the word, but clubs’ dealings with the SPFL and SFA is mostly about politically manoeuvring in the direction to win your argument.

Experienced political operators will tell you not to fight the same people on too many points; pick the important areas to win and take a few defeats on the chin.  Box the SPFL into a corner by not charging season ticket holders for entry into play-off matches, and you’re onto a sure win.  But all SPFL clubs are members of the SFA.

They all like being given their place.  If I wanted something important from the SFA, like exemption from the rule prohibiting directors of a liquidated club from subsequently becoming a club director, I’d concentrate on that and ask politely for permission to let season ticket holders into games.

But I realise there are different types of political animal.  The consensus political animal is effective in certain times, then there are those who have a self-righteous tone to rules.  It’s their way or the highway.  To paraphrase Bob Shankly, pure, athletic, Thatcherism.  Britain wasn’t ready for Thatcherism 30 years ago.  She won in 1979 and lost lots of votes second time around in ’83, but the Labour vote split.  The 80s were lean.  For some.

Scottish football is in for a period where a self-righteous entity will muster its forces.  The media coverage will reflect what we saw in politics in the 80s.  The consensus operators must stand firm and unite.

  2. Please, please hurry up with the JG verdict. Give us something to discuss instead of this election. I come on here to get away from it on TV. Anyway I’ve voted already by post so I canny chance my mind.

The party most likely to ensure another Tory led govt is the libdems surely? They have stated they’ll deal with anyone. Best tactic for a week to go must be to oust libdems so they can’t support the Tories. But, as we saw earlier, Labour are supporting tactically voting for a Tory supporting Libdem in a number of seats.

However, I’ve seen some unionist rhetoric that surprises me.

    =================================================

The word “Unionist” is used on here to demonise me and those like me who prefer to unite rather than divide, it is a deliberate attempt to stain by association with the scumbags in George Square, doesn’t surprise in the least.

The shrill tone of hate and vitriol used by many seperatists/yes voters/SNP against folk who have the temerity to hold a different view is shocking.

My own wee sister even accused our parents (and me) of being stupid because we defeated her wish lists with logic and simple facts of reality, eg.you can’t have independence without control of your currency etc.

  9. Ah! Paul67,

The ’83 general election, the first one I could vote in.

Certainly a large dollop of realpolitik in that encounter.

Margaret Thatcher’s waining popularity would certainly not have withstood the careless loosing of some South Atlantic Islands.

Of course we hadn’t really heard of them in the main but if the locals were sticking Guerra de las Malvinas on their addresses it wouldn’t have looked good. So we had a war, of course we didn’t call it a war at the time and officially it wasn’t. We’ll not until we’d “won” it.

Then there’s the aul Labour Party, about to vote for for a new leader, the script was, they vote in by far the most accomplished politician in the country as leader but something went terribly wrong.

At that time Dennis Healy could be assured of right wing of the Labour Party while Michael Foot had the left, as DH was highly popular with the centre of the party it was a shoe in, right.

Wrong, see there was a conspiracy on the right wing of the Labour Party and many of those labour MPs had decided to split from Labour and start their own Party. So they voted for Michael Foot to send the Labour Party to the left, leaving a gap in the centre ground of British Politics for their new party – The Social Democrats.

So, the coast was clear for Mrs Thatcher to call a timely election and romp home to victor.

    Interesting times eh!

Get the feeling it’s not a patch on Scottish Football”s realpolitik though.

But Scotland is an integral part of the British state, and Scotland, as a country, benefited from being part of the British state.

And the Scots played their part (by all accounts a disproportionate part) in all the excesses carried out by the British state.
