The difficult task of replacing Commons

447

Brendan Rodgers would have looked at Kris Commons age, position and recent injury record and assumed he’s not going to get much from him this season. He’d not be the first Celtic manager to come to that conclusion about Kris.

Kris has created more chances per minutes played than anyone in a Celtic shirt over the last decade, and that includes the golden era of Nakamura, Maloney and McGeady, which brought us into the Champions League knock out stages for the first time.

He didn’t fit Ronny’s system and might not fit Brendan’s, but to win leagues, cups and qualify for Europe, you need someone who can be relied upon to open obstinate defences, and we’ve struggled to find a better tool for this job than Kris Commons.

He’s in the final year of his final Celtic contract, but if he goes, I hope it’s not before 31 August.

Glenn Whelan?! Aaaahhhh! And many on here giving off about sideways passing. Look up the dictionary on sideways passing it days see Glenn Whelan!

  2. Interesting comments on Scott Brown this evening.

Whatever your views on Scott as a player and Captain, it has got to be said his form and injury record of late has meant his recent overall contribution has been patchy.

Brendan Rogers, it seems, looks on the team Captain as a crucial role, I believe he will name his own choice in due course. The fhella in question might not even be at the Club yet.

As for the conversation at BR’s home, I would imagine there would be several crucial items on the agenda… but one thought occurred to me at the time.

Scott Brown’s initial contract with Celtic contained a clause that he would be the highest paid player at the Club!?

Now, obviously Scott has had further contracts since then, but is that clause still relevant?

It seems to me if BR wants to attract the quality that has been linked with us this past couple of months we will have to break our wage ceiling.

Could this have been a subject of conversation?

Now as far as Bitton and a few others go…

It is my opinion that some players came to Celtic, to use us as a stepping stone. Now I don’t particularly blame the players for that, in fact, it may have been part of Celtic’s “sell” to these players.

But it strikes me, when a transfer window comes along and they are linked with a move, if Celtic don’t sanction the move the form of some players falls away…

IMO we don’t need that sort of player at the Club. It seems to me BR knows what it should mean to pull on the hoops and expects his players to know like wise.

    Hail Hail

I,too, am a Bitton fan and agree that the `fault` lies with the nature of the game in Scotland rather thean in the classy,Bitton.

    Elboy said:

” I guess many prefer the blood & snotters approach, me I prefer good footballers.”

I spoke to Bitton at Glasgow Airport a few weeks back and said more or less the same thing to him. His response suggested he was aware of that feeling 0:-)

I think too much is being made of Erik keeping the Captain`s armband. There seems to be general agreement on CQN that one of the purposes of friendlies is to experiment. No reason to take the armband from Erik in such a game.

Personally, I hope Broonie recaptures the form that makes him such an important player.

    Finally, Winning Captain.

If you cannot give a timescale for a Res 12 statement, then that is fine but I am at a wee bit of a loss that you so often post ` coming soon` comments.

I read it just for amusement.

Surprise, surprise there is NOTHING about how Sevco are gaining this imaginary edge.

There is an earlier one from the same site where Waghorn is supposed to be telling us how Sevco plan to stop 6 in a row.

Except that the article….er……doesn’t tell us of this fiendishly clever scheme to stop 6 in a row.

Pish stained desperation is such a melancholy sight to see.

WDH … a great English wine?! who’d have thunk it? sounds very nice. I will check and see if we can get it over here.

    Hot Smoked…..

Watching the Euros of late ([pretty dour but better technique than we see in Scotland), and even more so, comparing it to the small bit of the Copa that I have seen (just fun to watch), it drove home how far behind the rest of the world the game in Britain has fallen, both in terms of skill and tactics.

I wonder if anyone at the SFA has even bothered to read Wilson’s Inverting the Pyramid. The game in britain is stuck in the 1920’s.

I think that Scott Brown will be Gary Monked at some stage this season.

He is reaching the transitional stage of his career, where his on field appearances will become fewer and his coaching activities increase.

Brendan has virtually spelled it out for him.

He will remain the club captain until the day he leaves the club, or hangs up his boots, whatever comes first.

  15. I subscribe to Fileds of Green and have just received an email informing of the Charity article but I still couldn`t access it. Perhaps, VP , you could C & P? I will still give James plenty of hits.
