Chances of Marsch pitching up at Celtic Park?

268

We are looking for a manager, so you know the rules.  Some ex-players will try to scare you with Roy Keane, various agents will push their uninspiring clients into the spotlight in the hope a media association with Celtic will enhance their chances of getting fixed up at Swindon.  And, the occasional manager who wants more pay, will start talking about the honour of being linked with Celtic, while linking himself with Celtic.

Managers who are talking to Celtic right now are not talking to anyone in the media, you can bet Newco’s delayed vat payment on it.  I have no doubt RB Salzburg coach Jesse Marsch has been sounded out, but his “interesting” and “an honour” comments about Celtic tell you all you need to know.

Although he was speaking to BBC Sport, he was talking to his employer.  Chances of him pitching up at Celtic Park next season depend overwhelmingly on Salzburg’s Champions/Europa League draw.  Learn ‘manager speak’; silence is what to listen for.  Today’s story does not fit the profile, there will be another one along soon.

I hope so. Even approaching this kind of managers and asking the question will make me feel easier that we’re looking in the right areas.

Anyone know Morelos’ address? I want to take Zidane to see him….gie him a laugh.

  3. If you know your history, eh?

Does this not apply to our managerial recruitment?

We are threatening not to renew our SBs if the managerial name is not “sexy” or “ambitious” enough.

Where have we recruited from in the past?

    Willie Maley- from within

    Jimmy McStay- from Alloa

    Jimmy McGrory- from Killie

Jock Stein – 4 seasons with Dunfermline and one at Hibs

Billy McNeill- 2 months with Clyde and one season with Aberdeen

Davie Hay- one season with Motherwell

Billy McNeill- 3 seasons with Man City(2 inDiv 2 ,1 near the bottom of Div 1; plus a

relegation with Villa in his next season)

Liam Brady- No prior managerial experience

Lou Macari- 5 years at Swindon, 1 at W. Ham, 4 months at Birmingham and 2 at Stoke)

Tommy Burns- 2 seasons at Killie

Wim Jansen- 15 years coaching but only 1 year in Belgium, 3 years with Feyenoord and

1 year in Japan as manager

Jo Vengloz- 22 years mostly as manager but prior to coming was boss of Oman

    John Barnes- rookie

Kenny Dalglish- experienced but incommited and left after 4 months

MON- 13 seasons as manager including 4 seasons with Leicester in the top division

WGS- 8 seasons with 2 clubs in the EPL

Tony Mowbray- 2 seasons with Hibs and 3 at WBA- one relegation season in the Prem

    NFL- rookie manager

Ronny Deila- 6 seasons in Norway’s top flight

Brendan Rodgers- 7 seasons, 4 in the top flight. 8 months unemploted when he came

Neil Lennon- Less than 2 seasons with Bolton, 2 and a half with Hibs

So where is the expectation management coming from?

Are those advocating we speak with EPL and Bundesliga coaches managing our expectations knowing we are not likely to attract someone who has already made it to the big leagues or is still on an upwards curve towards them?

We can and do attract only 4 types of manager

    1) Rookie coaches like Gerrard desperate for a start at a safe level, i,e not lower league

    2) Players with Celtic backgrounds and a few seasons behind them in management

    3) Anomalies like Deila, Jansen and Venglos. The first was never meant to get the managerial post as early as he did and the latter two came with damaged reputations and from very minor sources.

    4) Guys who have been in the big leagues and want to get back ther- Rodgers

Of course there are unemployed ex-EPL coaches like Bilic and, even Howe, who may consider us but they’d be looking to get back to the Big leagues and Big bucks as quick as possible. There are also unemployed German, Spanish and Italian coaches who would also jump at the chance to rehabilitate. We are an attractive stepping stone for people on the upswing.

What we won’t get is someone who is curently wanted by a club in the Big Leagues. We lose players to Southampton, Swansea, Villa etc;. We cannot act as predators to steal managers from them or even from Championship Clubs if there managers smell the prospect of an EPL gig.

We recruit managerial novices or tarnished out of work experienced coaches.

Paul is being realistic and telling you, that, if a manager starts talking about being interested in the Celtic job, they are either Being polite, putting pressure on their current club, or responding to a planted question from a journo. In the insecure and changeable world of mangement, obody is going to turn round and say- “Celtic?? Naw- I’m looking for something better than that”.

Spot on. There was someone on here a few weeks ago who said we should ask Allegri or Pochettino “the question”. Why not just be done with it and ask Pep to leave City.

I want to see a good coach – he might have a big name, he might not but they don’t have to go hand in hand. Of all the (realistic) names mentioned, Maresca interests me.

I’d like Eddie Howe but let’s face it, if we wanted him and he wanted us, it probably would’ve been done by now.

Snarlene Foster as DOF and Ian Paisley Junior as first team coach/manager would be an imaginative appointment.

See what that would do for season ticket sales.

What SFTB and others wrote is true but is it beyond us to go ahead and ask anyway. You don’t ask you don’t get.

Re T Sinclair, some currant mentioned the OF trademark but then we know he or she’s only read that somewhere

  10. Go Tell Te Spartim

You don’t need to continue asking whenyou know from past experience what the answer is going to be.

Is someone recruited from a more humble managerial background, as per our history, going to be discounted as unambitious becaue we don’t know if we could not get Pochettino or Pep because we never asked?

Are we losing Forster, Van Dik & Armstrong to Southhampton, Ki to Swansea, Tierney to Arsenal and John McGinn to Villa because we never asked them to stay?

    Do we lose them because

    a) The Board and suits won’t pay them what they’re worth

or b) because that’s the natural financial pecking order

So many people just want the Scooby Doo thinking that “of it wasm’t for that pesky (interchangeable name of man with a suit), thye would still be with us.”

There’s a world of difference and cirumstance in the McGrory to Arsenal story and the Tierney to Arsenal version, or even the Charlie Nic to Arsenal one.

  11. I have just watched the highlights of Slavia Prague V Sevco Glasgow.

Sevco are favourites with the Bookies but I will not be at all surprised if Slavia Prague go through.

If I am wrong, and Sevco prevail, would they rest key players against us on the Sunday?

    OR

Would that be the moment when the Scottish Government decide that the Glasgow Derby should be cancelled after all?

Prestwick Airport – a White Elephant – Losses approaching £100m – up for sale and no one will touch it with a barge-pole.

Scotrail – just as well that some folk have had a taste of working from home because the cult will run this vital service ‘into the buffers”.

Education has crumbled to record low in international league tables – NHS only performing with help from UKGOV & the British Armed Forces – Local Government starved of cash with services slashed – Drug deaths per capita in Scotland are the highest in the world – Life expectancy in Scotland is the lowest in Western Europe.

Now the full spectrum of public transport is in the hands of this incompetent, feckless & corrupt cult.

Rodgers’ first season was a joy to behold, but we need to maintain / grow that intensity as a trademark through all levels of the club.

what was the question bud ?

  19. GeeBee – fair point but I’d counter with:

    1) Lennon and Delia suffered from the absence of them (and some failures against them);

    2) Strachan and O’Neill to a lesser extent were already known in EPL and in Strachan’s case his reputation wasn’t sufficient to get another good gig in the EPL but Boro was probably the best gig in the Championship back then. O’Neill got a decent job at Villa after some time out.

    3) Gerrard’s profile helps in the here and now – folk down south look at him and think he’s done a marvellous job – if Marsh/Maresca/someone come in and wipe the floor with him, there will be interest.

I think Marsh is Leipzig bound, so not happening, but I can’t agree that no decent managers from the continent won’t join us. We’re a stepping stone if nothing els
