Reason to enjoy Wednesday night number 67

Reason to enjoy Wednesday night number 67: Victor Wanyama didn’t get booked.

21-year-old Victor is a fabulous talent but he has also been a tad rash in his earlier Champions League outings this season.  One more yellow card will bring a suspension but his timing, and more importantly, his concentration, on Wednesday was excellent. This is a player maturing; more to come.

The 1254125 charity cycle left Lurgan this morning for Belfast port where they caught a ferry to Cairnryan. After they set wheel on Scotland they have a 37 mile cycle to Maybole, 7 miles of which is uphill, one of the most difficult parts of the endeavour.

They are people with the spirit of this club pumping through their veins right now. Check out their everyclick page for more information.

My dad passed 10 years ago, aged 87, so he had seen a lot.

He was a great dad and a devout catholic and I owe him so much.

I think about him every day and know how much he would have enjoyed the game on Wednesday.

I treasure the time we spent at games together and laterly when we watched on tv at his house.

Lovely, lovely memories of a great man.

    Sorely missed.

My mum suffers from the same; truly a horrible disease

Years ago, when she’d be berating one of her three boys, we used to joke with her about putting her in a home. We thought we could joke, because we thought we would never allow that to happen.

I think I fought tooth and nail to prevent it, but there’s always a doubt and a guilt I carry every day. She lived with us for a while, but needed 24 hour attention, not just for personal care, but to prevent her wandering. With the two of us working, the Doctors were adamant that the risk was too great – she needed 24 hour care. I priced it for keeping her at home, but it was way out of our league.

She still had her lucid moments the day we put her in the care home, which made it all the more cruel.

However, the priorities needed to be addressed – she’s safe, and has the personal care she needs. The family take care of the rest.

This has possibly made things worse – I hope not.

  11. Philbhoy – It’s just the beginning!

Yes I am blessed that they enjoy relatively good health at the moment, but as I read some of the posts on here, I realise more and more how fortunate I am and make more time to see them and spend time with them.

Thoughts and prayers with Vhman, I had posted before I read back.

My folks are devout, at mass nearly everyday as well.

It’s the memories of the good times that should be cherished. Our family are very fortunate in the love we receive from our parents and the wisdom, humour and knowledge they have shared.

And of course one of the greatest gift of all passed on to us, the Celtic Football club and family. :0)

  12. Sorry if posted already. This news about J Mc Guinness is big news over here.

He is highly regarded as an inspirational presence in any group. I talked to my daughters boyfriend today, he attended one of Mc Guinness’s motivational talks last year and he was very impressed with the man’s integrity, honesty, astute reading of game situations.

I predict Mc Guinness will ultimately manage Celtic – when Neil moves upstairs of course.

  14. Friends in Celtic, good evening !

In the years to come, an inordinate number of tales will be told, forgotten, embellished, wept over and celebrated when we discuss the 7th November 2012. For those who have the patience and interest I have recorded my experiences below, for I know many will empathise. There are hundreds of thousands of stories that resemble the paragraphs to follow, but this is how I experienced the greatest Celtic result in my living memory and I can think of no better place to recount it than Celtic Quick News, where I have learned, mourned and celebrated in equal measure over the last few years.

Feel free to scroll past, I may take more than my fair share of blog space here and I don’t mean to clutter the site…….

    .

The date has been in the diary since the draw was made and I have arranged to take some time off work to get some afternoon tapas and wine with a Celtic supporting work mate before heading to Paradise for the game. As October draws to a close, a glance at my annual leave card indicates a surplus of holidays – after protracted negotiations with Mrs Joad, I take Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday in anticipation of a special week.

Finishing work on Monday with a click of my heels and a spring in my step I go to see the journalist Graham Hunter preview the game at a venue in Glasgow along with Martin Greig who has co- written the Road to Lisbon novel. As an appetiser for the main event it under promises and over delivers – one of the best evenings of my year. This is partially because I bumped into an old school friend and caught up on old times but primarily due to the fact I got an hour to myself with the author at the end of the night with my aforementioned school buddy and a few chilled Peroni’s for company.

Here are some of Graham Hunters points of note from Monday evening:

This Barca team is the best there has ever been

Paul George will surpass anything Tony Watt achieves (and in his opinion Tony Watt will be brilliant)

Gerard Pique is mental, truly mental for practical jokes and tomfoolery, but harbours an intense desire to emulate his grandfather and become the president of Barcelona.

Marc Crosas supports Celtic as keenly as anyone he has ever known and would love to return to Paradise

The match of the day pundits are embarrassing, Gary Neville a breath of fresh air.

Scottish journalists keep an artificial lid on football reporting while the Scottish public, in the main, thirst for insight, analysis and detail.

One sports editor could have been a good journalist but morphed into a horrible bully

Barca directors wish to secure first option on Victor Wanyama

The evening ends, Hunter signs my book and seems to genuinely wish Celtic all the best for Wednesday. His love for Barca appears enormous, as does he, 6ft and 15 stone I would say. So impressed with that guy.

Tuesday passed with nothing of note except that I put my car in for an MOT and I suppose you all wanted to know that. It fails and will likely cost me a fortune

    .

I partake of no liquor all day Tuesday because I know what Wednesday is. Like so many I rise, early and enthusiastic, like a bairn on Christmas morn. It is ludicrous a grown man should be so excited, so unbalanced and giddy, but that is how it is.

Now for the serious, emotional part. Like Rod Stewart you should have handkerchiefs at the ready.

I cannot be calm on big matchdays until I have spoken to, or seen my dad, which is unusual because we have rarely attended games together, either due to me playing or his illnesses. A phone call normally suffices but I am off today so I decide I will go to and visit. Something draws me to mass and I don’t know why because I haven’t nurtured my faith in the way I should over the years but I walk to my father’s parish to meet him. We retire to my parental home and the warmth of the most comforting council house where he makes breakfast rolls and we read the papers and talk.

Like so many on CQN I owe my love of Celtic to my dad, what a gift. I have read many of you comment that if only your dad could be here for this or that and with this in my mind, I spend time with him, joking optimistically about our chances. He is 72 and an incredible guy. I leave, happy and satisfied, come what may.

The next few hours go like this:

Meet colleagues – buy new scarf – beers in Princes Sq – into Merchant City to sample the fanzone – into the Gallowgate for a couple more and then into my seat.

What an atmosphere! Generally, I have an outer body experience when Celtic score and this holds true when Wanyama bullets his header home, but when the young bull races away to seal the points I don’t move , I am numb, like Lubo when he scored in the 5-1 game.

    Final whistle, party starts.

I recently wrote an article for the CQN magazine about how Celtic reasserted itself in front of a UK wide audience when they defeated Blackburn ten years ago. But on Wednesday the world witnessed an outstanding young manager lead a gifted group of young players to victory over, arguably, the best team in history. The fans, as everyone witnessed, were beyond belief. Tributes continue to pour in from Barca, down south and all over Europe. The twelfth man. Stelling, Redknapp and Neville were fulsome in their praise.

And that is how I saw it, one of a million stories, on an evening when even people uninterested in football looked at the footage and said I wish I was there, what a celebration.

I’m still on cloud nine but the truly ridiculous thing is that I think this team with this manager, can go on to do better.

    Hail hail folks, TJ

I believe that what’s important is that we do what we think is best and right. It may not always work that way but so long as we are sincere in our reasons.
