Scott Brown, party plans pooped

341

Footballers typically hit their testimonial year well after their peak, but this is arguably Scott Brown’s best season of his 11 in a Celtic jersey.  His Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year awards, which he received last night, were a formality.  We all knew the captain would collect both prizes.

The first thing Brendan Rodgers did when he met the media on his appointment was to cite Scott as the most important player at the club.  Brendan knew what he could get out of the captain and understood the importance of setting his expectations out early.

Scott will be 33 in June.  One day we will discuss succession, but with his form and fitness at their best ever, that time could be a several years away.

Party plans were pooped on Saturday but at least Newco won yesterday, doing us a favour by ensuring that we can take the title by our own actions on Sunday, and not potentially while watching Aberdeen and Hearts on Friday night.

Normally I would tell you that the cup final is far more important than Sunday’s league game, but I want to win the league this weekend.  A lot.

No more mistakes, Celtic.

Rangers had to team up with Hummel as the Ibrox club are no longer attractive to big kit makers such as Nike, according to a leading football shirt expert.

Didn’t Nike drop us which is why we are now with New Balance and their tacky transfer-on club badges whereas Liverpool get their embroidered, just saying like.

That’s one way of putting it. They offered us less than the previous contract. If they had been that keen to renew they’d have blown NB’s bid out of the water. Our now regular humpings in Europe won’t do much to improve our brand image with the big sport kit manufacturers.

You are always negative about Celtic.

    Anything to confess?

    —————————————————————————————————

I’d like to confess I don’t do corporate bullshit. The publicity surrounding the launch of the NB deal was smoke and mirrors to distort the truth that we had just lost a long standing contract with the biggest sports kit manufacturer on the planet and with it the opportunity to promote the club in Nike outlets all over the world. Now it may be that we were punching above our weight when compared to Nike’s other big clubs such as Barca but there’s not getting away from the fact that NB is a step down from Nike or Adidas just as Hummel is a big step down from Puma. By all means let’s scoff at Sevco and the downmarket Hummel but let’s not forget that we are no longer the force we once were in the eyes of the biggest football kit manufacturers. If we suffer any more pumpings in Europe, I don’t think NB will be rushing back to renew the existing contract with us. Them’s just the commercial facts of life whether you consider them negative or not.

On a more positive note, I hope work went well today.

  16. M6BHOY @ 12:00 AM,

It’s obvious you have little time for the Corporate’s approach, I have no great love of it myself.

It is however a reality of life. In my opinion having at least an overview of how they work is important.

The fact is we never were a huge Club in Nike’s pantheon of Football Clubs’. And it’s true, we are now probably less so.

Can’t see Adidas and Nike going head to head to see what “OF” Club they can entice. Those times are dead and gone (respectively) – though it’s worth remembering a generation ago both Rangers and Celtic were in the top league of Replica kit sales…

Yet that doesn’t mean that we didn’t have options with Nike and had a different value proposition from NB.

NB are big in American sports, the focus to expand their portfolio into World soccer means heavy investment by them.

They will be selecting their partner Clubs in Countries very carefully. The fact that they see Celtic (& of course Liverpool) as a valued partner in The UK is a great testament to our Clubs standing.

All branding BS I know, but the simple fact is we are more important to NB than Nike – a good bit of business for Celtic.

I think our 50th Anniversary kit is a stonker and I wear mine with pride…

I think you downplay NB as a brand on the up amongst the youth. Like you, I have no time for these big brand names, but we have to work with one of them for kit and sponsorship.

    Thanks for the good wishes.

    Well, that’s me snookered.

Do NB do anything in the ole garden centre line?

  21. CHAIRBHOY on 24TH APRIL 2018 5:42 AM

I have no issues with your assessment of our place in the football kit world though we are obviously not as highly valued a partner as Liverpool who at least get an embroidered badge on their kits whereas our is a tacky stick-on transfer effort.

My issue is with those who sneer at Sevco deal with Hummel whilst failing to recognise or accept that our club is also on a kit manufacturer downward trajectory (corporate bullshit alert!) albeit not nearly as steep as Sevco’s.

I can imagine that the NB marketing people would be less than impressed (more corporate bullshit) by our performances in Europe as they reflect badly on their brand image. They don’t see Barca or Bayren Munich beating us handsomely. Through their lens, it’s Nike and Adidas that’s handing NB its corporate erse on a plate and that’s not good for a company keen to expand in Europe.

Unless our performance in Europe improve, I don’t think NB will be in any rush to renew our deal especially with Liverpool exceeding their expectations on the European front.

  22. Good morning good ghuys, from a very cold North Glasgow

    I have to dash but…..

How can Nike/Adidas remain top dog in Europe if they limit their deals to teams that don’t get gubbed by Bayern or PSG or Barca? By that logic they would all be vying to sponsor around 8 elite clubs and, even then, they would find that occasionally a PSG or a Roma will get a doing from another top flight outfit.

Heavy defeats are only an issue if it reduces the market of Celtic fans willing to buy strips. The majority of us accept that our economic and marketing straitjacket places us where we are. We get on with celebrating our successes without worrying overmuch about our Euro failures. After all only Celtic fans between roughly 66 to 74 could claim they were following a Euro or World elite team.

Tells of how before European cup final against Roma in 1984 , they started singing in the tunnel before going out to play and this unnerved the Roma players. I agree with most of what you are saying.. Our aspirations must extend to European progress.

NB, big in America, are the new kids on the block in European terms with ourselves and Liverpool spearheading their corporate ambitions. Doubtless, they desire a bigger share of the European market and brand image is critically important when trying to “grow the business”. I’ve no doubt Celtic supporters will continue to buy the replica kits by the shed-load but that may not be enough, in of itself, if NB decide our performances in Europe damage their brand image. They won’t want to be portrayed as “losers”.
