When to whip and when to not

454

After the adrenaline-fuelled dramas that a return to the Champions League after five long years provided, Celtic are off to Paisley on Sunday.  There will be an inevitable drop-off in in energy levels, the players are not machines, after all, as we take on an opponent with more robust objective from the game.

While Celtic have four days to recover and prepare, St Mirren will be 15 days without a game when they take on the champions.  During this period, they will have been able to do some endurance training and get plenty rest before what will be a committed 90 minutes’ effort.  They will not be easy to overcome.

Whatever motivational chat Ange Postecoglou gives before a game, it cannot always have the same intensity.  I expect he fully animated the players for the games against Real and Shakhtar, but words overused lose their affect.  Can he really whip them up for St Mirren?  I doubt it, in fact, I don’t even think he should.

Our baseline performance must be substantial enough to pick the points in Paisley.  The next big emotional effort is three weeks away, save the inspiration for then.  One more push before the break.

For those that know a bit about driving it represents the point at which you can no longer see the road.

For some who come on here once in a while to lecture us, they reached that point a long long time ago.

And they need to realise and accept that fact.

In my opinion .. good Celtic punters talking our rubbish about Celtic … in my opinion, is good 🍀

I get people want to defend Celtic in their own inimitable way and post opinions in their head that they think everyone will agree with….what i don’t understand is when they hit the roof when people see it differently.

Anyway the wee song above takes me to a happy place ..CQN ..”This must be the place”..Talking Heads ….

    ironic or whit!!!

  8. Meanwhile about the football. It’s easy to forget we are top of the league with 6 wins from 6 games played and have scored 25 goals in the league. Only 1 team has scored against us. This is phenomenal form. Form which doesn’t happen by accident. I hope Ange and the team don’t allow the sideshow to distract on Sunday. I am sure they won’t.

We have been here before and had false dawns Eg the John Barnes era but never with the sense of real momentum and something very special going on with our team.

The domestic results are staggering and overall our performances are matching. We are doing this whilst expanding and adding ‘faces which fit’ into a really special blend.

We are doing this whilst our rivals were totally reeling. 0-11 in their last 3 games and no real strengthening of their squad. In a poll on Thursday 51% of their fans expect to win 0 (zero) points in the CL and a high number qualified that with zero goals. But hey they have all stepped up and paid their £180 for the 3 games. No post Xmas European journey for them in prospect and trailing in the league by 5 points and a massive goal difference.

Make no mistake the deflection suits them fine and the distraction will energise them on Saturday. We would all love to see Dundee Utd do as they did last season and take points from them, it really would be huge but realistically the energy in their ground will be supercharged and I doubt it is likely.

For us I hope Ange gives this last game before the break full focus and the strongest team to finish this section of games in style. We will have a fair few on international duty and we have to hope they come back unscathed for a section of the season which really will be ‘make or break’.

4 CL games plus Hearts & Livingston league away and Motherwell away in the LC are the likely highlights. But another 6 other domestic league games before the World Cup are there to be won.

The other lot will hopefully have intermittent punctures to any recovery as they get out classed in the CL to knock them back. They also have trips to Hearts and Motherwell to handle and a few other tricky ones to negotiate. Even a couple of draws could leave them out of the league race by the time the World Cup kicks off too.

This next few weeks will give them an advantage of far fewer players (virtually none) away on international duty. We will have almost a full squad away. They will also possibly have a few back from injury but short on any match practice.

For us in the CL it is my honest view that we are just a touch of self belief and confidence and maybe luck away from achieving something really special on the big stage.

Never in my 60 years have I enjoyed the football Celtic is playing like I am this season. I know there are thousands of others who feel similar. I really hope we get that big breakthrough that Ange and the team behind him and the management who backed him get their rewards.

For once putting a prediction of 4 or 5 nil for Sunday does not feel like hope over expectation.

I do realise some on the blog are not seeing these as great Celtic times and that for me is a real shame. If ever we have a team playing in the mythical Celtic way then it is now before our very eyes. I for one am looking forward to every kick of the ball / fast throw in / quick taken corner and goals of any type.

This is the main reason I don’t want the other lot afforded a single bit of energy. Not a single deflecting cause to drive their recovery and engagement between Club and fans.

The engagement of our fans / team / manager / board has never been so aligned and strong. That can be such a critical factor helping us create something really amazing.

We have a few other things which will work for us Re the CL and the World Cup but that’s all to come.

These are special Celtic times for us all to enjoy. HH

  9. Burnley78 11.55pm

John Barnes had a terrific start to the league until obviously Henrik … but Ange is doing something special … I loved the fact we faced Real Madrid after the the Huns game as every player wanted to play against Madrid the Huns were a 2nd thought to the players … hope you enjoyed Warsaw overall and I think that point away is terrific for us

We always live in special Celtic times .. as I have previously stated Lenny & Brendan done great things as well as WGS & MON … but just dream … Ange “might” even be better …

    Us bhoys can dream 🍀

  10. Red Bull Leipzig, who Celtic Club of Glasgow meet next in a double header in the Champions League, what could possibly go wrong for RBL?

    6 points please Celtic. :)

We are an Incredible Team thats just not taking our chances, YET.

Normally you would be fearful of playing a German team without any points efter the first 2 games in the Champions League.

DoubleHeader lets get the 6 points.

St Mirren Sunday will bring different and a lot mair Agricultural problems to solve to get the 3 points.

GP-Although the blog’s subject matter is diverse its fundamental rationale is to discuss all things Celtic.

    .

    AT indeedi

Simple questions re banners and self explanatory answers.

Gp-Do such banners enhance Celtic’s reputation?

    At’ – yep

Do such banners detract from our performance on the park.?

    No.

Do such banners help Ange and the players ?

My opinion would be I don’t know, players I have spoken to when a major banner was shown was after 4 horses banner. They said whole day was fun,

Now that’s only one player and one display. The club themselves use quotes from xavi and inesta on the Celtic way from the 125 display. Most displays are accepted as part of the theatre of going to see Celtic

Gp-Do such banners delight our enemies.?

At -you would have to define enemy.in general if your talking of the usual suspects, 2nd guessing what makes that constituency delighted and happy doesn’t enter into it.They would end us.1994 told me that.alas like all else they touch it failed.

Gp-Do such banners constitute a mega own goal ?

At-That’s the current chat, question. This one seems to be.at the moment.its attracting a lot of bluster,

Gp-Do such banners delight and encourage current and potential sponsors?

At- sponsors get enough delight and encouragement by their association with Celtic Gp,They get their returns, sales and profits aplenty on Celtics name by us

Gp-Do such banners crave attention seeking ?

At-They got your attention Gp,you unhappy that some scots/Irish are unrepentant and unasimialated Celtic fans reject your unions mournathon?

GpDo such banners embarras Celtic football club ?

At-That’s to you and I.we are Celtic.Embarass,I would have done it diff its done now lets deal with it,but I am not a member of Celtic fans called the green brigade,I don’t think embarass(shame) comes into it.

Gp-Are such banners beneficial to brand Celtic?

At’ What exactly is “brand” Celtic Gp? I asked B78 earlier,is it the same “brand” Celtic that enables silence on 2012s aftermath? Celtic men and woman are the brand. They rebuilt our club. They, you and i built the club.brands do what brands do and joined as the money machine rolled in to play

Gp-Im all for free speech and absolutely defend the right of individuals to fly such banners. But have the courage of your convictions and fly them from your living room window.

At- I am sure many do.Do you not like any banner Gp?

I get the impression your pro union socialism is uncomfortable with any show of Celtics Irish History,

Is there a banner do and don’t list somewhere?

    Gp-If not why not ?

At- celebrating Celtic in words, song or visually is a freedom Celtic fans have had since they left the hall meeting at St Mary,it will be done also in the future, its not a brand thing, tis a Celtic supporter thing.

Gp-Dont fly them in the name of Celtic football club.

At-The banner is done now.You make your choice on how you support Celtic,a Celticfootballclub officer will no doubt speak and lay out what will happen once uefa lay sanction.imo then the stadium plan, mouse and click

    HH the journey continues.

HH and some journey it is Gp since we left that hall.

    :-)

    Hail Hail

  12. Petec 12..17am

I know you had far more important things today with your Da… but a good few of the bhoys were asking for you

    One of these days ,..

I know you like a bit of nostalgia …

    BlantyreTim & Lennybhoy … we’re in attendance

Some say nostalgia … others might say two old farts :-)

  13. lets all do the huddle on

Red Bull Leipzig, who Celtic Club of Glasgow meet next in a double header innt the Champions League, what could possibly go wrong for RBL?

    —-

the RB doesnt stand for Red Bull in Leipzigs name

so we arent playing any such team

its a bit like saying we are playing a team who call themselves rangers even though they arent so we should be 3 up at half time 😄

  14. GFTB,

    I thought I was a bit mad, I know I am.

Arthur is in the Your not allowed out of this area, anyway we went to see him Yesterday, theres usually 1 at most 2 walking about the corridor, wan being ma Dad.

They had put on a Karaoke and the old dears, 6 at least were meandering in the corridors, it was if they were being forced away from the noise of the chanters.

    Ach its a shame.

I take the tablet doon to show Dad highlights of the big games but there is no response – he’d be as well looking at a banana going from Green to Yellow.

Cardross Shore perhaps even more than Celtic songs is his Favourite and I cannae find it online.
