It doesn’t look good, Guardian. It doesn’t look good at all

1862

Last week’s advert in the Tribune de Geneve was in English, despite the predominant local language being French. The primary target audience were Uefa representatives and functionaries, who are not drawn from the local Nyon catchment area, and will most likely speak English, with secondary target audiences in the UK. I hear both targets were reached.

There was a short-lived chat about which language to run with in Switzerland, but consensus was quickly reached that English was appropriate and sufficient. No translation was ever made.

Very much related to this subject…….

There was an incident when I was at school (many years ago). Two boys had exactly the same maths homework. This would have been fine had the work been correct, but the made exactly the same mistakes, so the teacher had sufficient proof to establish that he didn’t have two independently produced pieces of work.

The class lesson that day was, if you’re going to coordinate a response, you better get your facts right, or you’ll get caught.

Shortly after the Tribune de Geneve advert ran it was brought to my attention that some regularly-hostile-to-Celtic online loons were running with a line that an English advert had been sent to Switzerland and a French advert had been sent to an English newspaper by mistake.

This was fanciful, but not worthy of attention, because as you now know, there was never a French translation of the advert.

You can imagine my utter astonishment, therefore, that The Guardian claimed they didn’t run the advert because it was submitted to them in French, despite, as surely the world now knows, no French language version of the advert ever existing!

“If you’re going to coordinate a response, get your facts right.” It doesn’t look good, Guardian. It doesn’t look good at all. You’ve been caught in PR vice.

You know how PR works in Scottish football. Celtic and most clubs play with a straight bat: “This is the news relating to our games and events”, but there are clubs, personalities and organisations which are only tenable because of expensive and persuasive PR.

You remember the Poppy banner issue, which became news a full two days after a game, by which time PR could persuade journalists to run with a story which until then had no news value. You are only too familiar with some of the vacuous characters ushered into the game by newspapers demanding Lloyds Bank approve a takeover, while PR spun incredible lies about finance and probity.

The next time Celtic, or their manager, is vulnerable on a subject, look out for this Malign Influence.  It battered Ronny Deila when he lost games, and recently went for Peter Lawwell.

My thanks to The Guardian advertising people, who confirmed to us this morning that the advert they received was in English. That’s the other thing about coordinating a Malign Influence, you need to get buy-in from a lot of people!

  1. Gerrybhoy, Starry Plough,

I’m another former Holy Cross Bhoy, started in 1967 (a very fine year I believe!) and left in 1972. A long daily trip for a Busby Bhoy.

Reading back, I saw mention last night of Holy Cross school in Hamilton. I know the headmaster, John Reilly, from back in the day (late 70s). He used to be the heedy at my alma mater, St. Mungo’s. He played in the same Celtic Boys Club team as Alan Brazil and Roy Aitken and is a massive Tim though I suspect he has to suppress that. A nicer guy you could not hope to meet – he was a bit of a lad in the old days but what happened then stays there.

I believe you are quite correct, MACJAY1is purporting the often missinterpreted survival of the fittest scenario.

This like many other narratives that allows the Establishment and Capitalists to exploit the populace for it’s own purposes.

I have seen very little indication that the great things achieved by humankind were done on the back of this aspect of “human nature” quite the opposite in fact.

Of course there has always seemed to be a “devil take the hindmost” mentality to certain aspects of our society but for me, this was in order that a selfish few could advance to the detriment of the majority.

This “selfish gene theory” is anathema to me.

For me humankind is in tune with a humanistic approach and flourishes through self-actualization.

There is a huge body of evidence that this is our true human nature.

An interesting take on the subject was aired on the BBC’s “Life Scientific” program on EO Wilson.

“Known to many as the founding father of socio-biology, E O Wilson is a big hitter in the world of evolutionary theory. But, recently he’s criticised what’s popularly known as The Selfish Gene theory of evolution that he once worked so hard to promote (and that now underpins the mainstream view on evolution).”

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0639kzv#play

EO Wilson, who was a main purponent of the “self gene theory” has at a ripe old age and after many years of rigorous analysis concluded that nature works far better in an altruistic manner.

If the “selfish gene” is prominent in our society it is because it is taught to us seruptitiously firstly as children then into adulthood. Like the rest of our schooling system it is geared to fashion cogs in the Capitalists system rather than Educate with Truth and Knowledge.

  5. It’s been a good start to the Euros. Some decent games – not great football but close and competitive matches for the neutral or, in some cases not to neutral, fan. And a few late goals too!

  6. I’d suggest reading some of the commentary on the blog there is a narcissistic sociopathic strain that sadly is not something learned but genetically birthed. Some people, and there are many, just do not have the ability to be selfless or empathetic and live their lives selfishly with a want to own and control all that they can financially and emotionally.

Sadly the world is ran by these type of individuals.

The British empire was founded in ultra violence, and maintained by savagery visited upon small nations from Ireland to Australia. Neutrality from the savage one was the sensible option.

Take a wee look at “Britain’s Empire” (Richard Gott). I think you’ll be disabused of notions of Benevolent Britannia, which is the brainwashing we got in Scottish (small nation) schools.

Yet you do point out an anomaly which has long bothered me.

Why would those in a privileged position where they have money, security, access to knowledge and true facts act in this coercive manner. As superior beings as it were… very disconcerting.

    Why should Ireland be ignored

  11. saltires en sevilla on

The 1841 UK Census counted the population of England and Wales to be 15.9 million.[10] Ireland’s population was 8.2 million in 1841.[11] The population of Scotland was 2.6 million.

Anyone wondering about the engineered destruction of Ireland to the benefit of England ( and Scotland) consider the steady growth in population of England and Scotland since An Gorta Mor!

England 55 million (more than trebled)

    Scotland 5 million (doubled)

Ireland (32 counties 6.4 million give or take significantly reduced and probably halved until very recently)

    Why?

Leaders of countries measured strength and potential wealth in population ( or able bodied men) to work industry and agriculture or die in battle, as a strategic asset until 1930’s.

Ireland was savaged for a reason, it is little wonder that there remains huge resentment at the systematic destruction of one nation by another, for nothing other than material gain!

Personally, I like and admire most of the English people I meet as neighbours, colleagues or socially. I wish them weel.

There can be no dispute that it was in fact the British and Irish Empire.

    Created pre 1921.

And the attempted airbrushing of the substantial contribution made by Irishmen to the creation of that Empire is simply facile.

Why can`t we all just move on instead of antagonising fellow Celtic supporters who have the temerity not , in fact , to be Irish?
